Hi,

Been lurking for most of 2 years but now I'm finally building a car that's worth a post or 2. So here the run down so far!
These are the renderings of how the build will look incl. some "artistic freedom" (drip rails and door handles are staying so far):
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/zvthansMustangfrproof4.jpg
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/zvthansMustangrearfinal1280.jpg

The GT2 naming is because this is my second attempt at a GT type car (Gran Tourismo) or Pro Tourer.

The feature list looks like this:
Ford SB 363 stroker, World Products block, all forged & hyd. roller, 0 balance, Diamond pistons
Single turbo: BW AirWerks 80mm S400 (S480?), intercooler
Big Stuff 3 ECU
HKS EVC VI boost controller
BBK SSI-R intake
T-56 trans from Pro Motion, McLeod RST clutch, hydraulic throwout
AJE front coil over struts w/adjustable A-arms, improved roadrace K-member, double adj. Koni's, manual rack & pinion
13" 4-piston Brembo front, 11,65" Cobra R rear
FAB9 9" rear & TrueTrac, TCP leaf spring kit, adj. Varishocks
TCP torque arm & Panhard bar
18" Shelby CS56 wheels, 9.5" and 11" width
Toyo R888 rubber, 275/35 and 315/30
Speedhut Revolution gauges
69 Deluxe interior, black
ProCar leather seats
Rollcage & Simpson harness
Custom carbon bodywork & aero parts

The car is being built by CPR Streetmachines, the engine by Total Performance (Obsidian etc.). Both in San Diego. I do as much of it as I can on weekends in CA.

I was lucky to get a stranded project from a guy in Portland, looked like this when it rolled in:
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/hans69fbdy3.jpg

The previous owner did a very good rust revival, new rear qtrs, inner wheelwell, floors, rear valance, tailpanel and what not. Completely clean now though.

Rear wheels back from widening (Vaughns Machine in LA). Went from 9.5" to 11" for the rears. Notice how little weight was needed to balance out those 315s.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/th_DSC_0035.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/DSC_0035.jpg) http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/th_DSC_0040.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/DSC_0040.jpg)

With all 4 wheels present and accounted for we could finally set the ride height:
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/th_2008_1213_143103.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2008_1213_143103.jpg)

Front fender got the lip rolled around a 5/16 rod to get a nice curved edge:
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/th_2008_1213_143051.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2008_1213_143051.jpg) http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/th_2008_1213_143055.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2008_1213_143055.jpg)

Making the custom fender emblems out of 2 302's and a 460:

I went for Speedhut Revolution gauges. The 4" and 2-5/8 fit the original gauge cluster perfectly but of course there was a lot of work in modyfying and fitting:
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/th_2008_1207_171736.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2008_1207_171736.jpg) http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/th_2008_1207_171802.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2008_1207_171802.jpg) http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/th_2008_1208_222141.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2008_1208_222141.jpg)

So that's basically where we're at right now. Engine and tranny are set (back & down from stock) and the turbo just came in. So now it's time for Dustin to do his thing! Fab up turbo headers, DP etc. etc. and get the thing rolling!

great looking renderings! In the end you beat me to it - I have been road racing my car and will stick with it for a couple more years but in the near future I am going to do a 70 fastback and you have virtually the same color scheme I planned, just "flipped"! Looks even better than I expected it too (my race car is two tone black on the bottom/olive green on top with black stripe full length - I was going to do the same to the 70. You are flipped with green on the bottom and black on top - again, looks great.

I had a 70 Grabber Sportsroof for years that had a "reverse C" stripe like the 69 Boss and love the look - your take on it with the GT2 and 363 looks great.

Shot of my car for grins - green and black cars rule! Best of luck on the build - will subscribe and follow along.

Thanks for all the kind words!

The paint scheme is inspired by the 69 Trans Am driven by George Follmer. All my cars are green and/or black so the combination was a no-brainer. ;) The wheels were the closest I could find that looked like a present day relative of the classic mini-lite racing wheels.

I don't know the name of the heat barrier, will check. But it works great.

Dustin at CPR is full on the turbo placement and piping arrangement and I'm working on the carbon parts, so hopefully more pictures soon! We're shooting for a spring premiere.

Darren, the car is in San Diego where the builder is (CPR Streetmachines). I'm flying over now and then to do some of the work though.
When it's nearly complete it'll be shipped here. Actually quite routine: 4 cars in a 40', pay $1600, wait 5-6 weeks. The last part is what REALLY sucks!

Anyway, time for an update. Working on the turbo setup and the carbon parts, both takes a loooong time before it looks like anything at all, lots of planning and prep.

Engine is back in and moved way back and down, no issues clearing the hood:
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/th_2009_0106_081008.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2009_0106_081008.jpg) http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/th_2009_0106_080956.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2009_0106_080956.jpg)

Turbo placement is done and the helper bracket taking most of its weight is in, 5" DP being mocked up and cutting for the IC:
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/th_2009_0106_085550.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2009_0106_085550.jpg) http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/th_2009_0106_101543.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2009_0106_101543.jpg) http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/th_2009_0108_082429.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2009_0108_082429.jpg)

I'll post some pics of the carbon work in a couple of days, it's all work 1-2 hours, wait 12 hrs to dry/harden/cure.

So to get some instant results I mounted my Oregon Scientific actioncam on my helmet. Simple click on off mount that comes in the camera kit, now epoxy/glassed to the helmet. Needs a bit of finish + some black sealer on the edges:

Yeah, definitely nice work by Zee. Managed to find that exact green too: MG British Racing Green (as used on the 2007 Exige for instance). Getting the exhaust up that high requires a fair amount of work but it's worth it.

295 rear tires will fit a 69-70 without issues (maybe a little hammering), the 315's required a little extra room in the front of the inner wheel well:

I agreee!! How are you planning to do that diffuser? I really like it a lot!

CptKlutz

Diffusor is done in 10mm Airex foam core and carbon fibre and clear epoxy as a "positive" molding. A one off thats taking me ages to fab and sand... :( The hood scoop alone has probably taken me 15 hrs so far.

I picked up the quarter emblems from the laser shop today! I dislike the original Mach I emblems so we tossed ideas around and came up with these. I made a set of 3½" slightly domed aluminum emblems, sanded them for an age with 800 grit, had them anodized and then laser "milled" 0.2mm deep with an industrial laser.
Drawing the 2D logo first in Corel Draw and then in 3D (Solidworks) was the worst part and probably took 6 hours... You can convert simpler 2D geometries fairly automatically in Solidworks but this came out as more than 3.500 splines and had to be handled area by area...
The emblem will be recessed into the qtr panel.

Thanks! Being creative is hard work. Nothing like just building stuff. LOL

Some progress made on the IC core, though we're still waiting on the last parts. Dustin @ CPR can really weld  :

Also doing work on the torque arm mount. Welded it into the floors for max ground clearance & stiffness. Still need to position the actual mounting bracket:

Some fresh pics of the cold-side all mocked up. We decided to keep it cool and out in the fresh air. If this was a drag car we'd stay in the engine bay but give it 30 mins on the track and it'll be all heat-soaked under there.

http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/th_2009_0228_1.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2009_0228_1.jpg) http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/th_2009_0228_2.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2009_0228_2.jpg)

Gotta love those Brembos too.
The underside is also (re-) finished. The torque arm tube stayed but we redid the rest - one of those days where you just have to admit you made a wrong turn. Now it has a very unique way of cross bracing and providing monster torsional rigidity.

Meanwhile I'm busy on the carbon parts. Here the hood scoop being molded as a positive layup instead of a mold. I was trying to save time and this is the first time I've done it with clear carbon and no gelcoat. Jeez, the hours spent on clearcoating and sanding that thing! The front spoiler and splitter are a bit more rough finished thank god.

Wax on, wax off. Getting the original ready and slick:

Thanks! Now if I could only free up time to get the rear diffusor done in time too...

We made a grille from a sheet from customcargrilles.com, pattern is called XXL Hexagon and we're going to powdercoat it black. I made a 2D drawing to work from if anyone needs it, but basically you bend over the original plastic piece.

http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/th_2009_0507_203046.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2009_0507_203046.jpg)
(and yes, the first try came out too narrow courtesy of USPS)

I was worried about heat soak under the hood and also wanted to reduce front lift even more, so Dustin at CPR and Bob from SoCal Paintworks made some inverted louvers in the hood. A real pain as its all double layer under there and any heat makes it warp. Cant press directly into the hood but needed to weld in a separate piece. Came out great after some bending back in shape!

Did you TIG weld those louvers on? What filler rod did you use?

CptKlutz
05-14-2009, 09:13 AM
Yeah, Dustin tigged it with a silicate bronze rod. Lower melting point than normal trying to warp it as little as possible. They may try to MIG the rest because tig puts a lot of heat in the metal by nature.

Have you tried a pulse instead of constant current? I feel the sheet metal I've done warps less when I'm using the tig on a low current pulse setting. and you end up with less grinding too.

So, here the latest update on the build. Holidays and other stuff has been in the way but its finally getting color. Finished the hood louvres - what a warping pain! Russell, I don't know how they welded it in the end but there was a good deal of warp to say the least. Got Bob from SoCal Paint to fix it, he knows the tricks.
Also the grille is finished and ready for powdercoat:

Also got a little crazy on a last minute detail, a window net. Don't give me a hard time on that, I've just always wanted one since I got to drive a real NASCAR. It's bolted in in the pic, but yes there will be a quick release of course.

Color is 2008 Lotus Exige British Racing Green, a really old school BRG without any metallic at all. Really fits the Mustang IMHO. This is shot b4 the clearcoat. It will get a 1/4" white pinstripe as separation between the green & black, inspired by the George Folmer Trans Am car.

Russell, I don't know how they welded it in the end but there was a good deal of warp to say the least.

Just wondering

WOW, that one's coming along and looks killer I love the turbo piping.:hail:

You might play with the White Balance on your camera It kinda looks turquoise and dark blue lol.

The car is outside SoCal Paintworks, they always seem to have 1-2 VW's going on.
The British Racing Green has a lot of blue in it but you should play with your monitor settings I think! :unibrow: ;)

Here a little add on to the front spoiler, just mocked up real quick on my other 69. The GT2 will have special mounts for it so it can be removed when I want to look more "historically correct" I made it from an 8mm Airex foam core and 3 layers of CF. Not too pretty as its a wear part on the track anyway.

Hi:

Great Build, I've really been enjoying reading about it.

A question?

Assuming that this will be driven on the Street, Where will the Rear License Plate go?

Keep us the good work!

Thanks,

My guess would be in the license plate recess in the rear valance, but that
's just me.... :unibrow: unless it's on of those crazy 2' long euro plates...

Yes the license plate is one of those 2' long ones. ;) It probably ends up tucked up under the bumper to one side. Haven't decided.

OK, I know this is long overdue so here finally a few updates.

Engine dropped in, looks tiny all by itself down there but just wait until it meets all the turbo piping... :D Also the breather can is in. Right now it's moved "outside" for a cleaner look and easy access but might move back in, let's see.

Just came back from CA, brought over the CF spoilers and helped a bit on wiring the beast. The project has been on a bit of hold awaiting all the interesting changes the EU has made to import customs and VAT on classic cars. For a while it has been uncertain whether I'd be able to bring it in (more than $20k added in taxes) but there is hope at the end of the tunnel it seems.
And before anyone comments: that is NOT the right steering wheel! Missing an adaptor ring for the quick release that will take a Grant woody or a suede Momo.

No news in a while.

In short the recent changes to our EU import taxation, inspection and registration of classic and modified cars, means that the GT2 has now become to expensive (for me) to import and register in Denmark. So here it comes... :(

Ultimate pro-touring Mustang FOR SALE

The project stands as shown in the latest progress update. It basically just needs finishing of the electricals (at ~90%), assembly of interior, doors, rubber & glass, body panels, some exhaust and then dial-in. All the nice, custom and expensive stuff is there and waiting, so you are looking at minor parts + labor. CPR Streetmachines have done the build and will want to finish it. They are one of the best shops I have ever worked with and are knowing, always true to promises and fair in pricing.
This is not a budget build, so be realistic in price expectations. Trades considered (Mustang). PM me if you a serious and want to discuss.

Hey what do you know, finally some movement on the build again. The car is now at Best of Show Coachworks for final assembly as CPR has become too busy with manufacturing turbo kits. Thanks for the recommendations for BOS, cool place and crew.

So does this mean you'll get to keep it now or will you still have to sell the car? Glad to see it's getting some attention again.

Car is now ready to run and has been trailered up to Performance Associates in San Dimas. Has been fired up for the first time and is now ready for some serious tuning on the dyno! :unibrow:

That's great!

I know you said it's still for sale but do you plan to come to the states and drive it before you sell it?

Initial setup on the dyno is now done, playing it safe with 10 psi tops until it's all broken in and set up. Tune is for maximum driveability and fun, not bragging rights. Later we'll likely go to around 15 psi.

CAn you tell us the heads/headwork and cam specs on the motor ?
Compression ?

Even though it says BBK on it that looks like the TFS-R intake ?

CptKlutz
11-22-2012, 02:08 PM
Absolutely:
Edelbrock Victor Jr. heads, fully ported by Total Performance in Santee. Of course port matched in and out.
Custom grind hyd. roller cam by CamMotion, duration @ 0.050” is 226° intake and 220° on exhaust with lift at 0.540” intake and 0.542” exhaust, 114° lobe separation and 110° centerline.
9.2:1 compression ratio.

The intake is really a BBK Performance 5.0L SSI-R Race Intake Manifold incl. their fuel rail kit. Nice piece although they wouldn't sponsor a dime, cheap bastards! ;) The matching BBK Power-Plus 80mm throttle body got lost somewhere along the way so we're using a LS3 unit now.

Import rules have changed, making it too expensive to register here...

Another small update: Finally my countless hours creating a one off carbon fiber rear wing are showing. Thats probably a full weeks work right there.
Also note how its repositioned to where it actually has some effect:

That really sucks, you can't import the car EVEN after you spent so much time on it.

Visit once a year to where you now live, and see your family and friends.

Then get your butt on a plane and fly to Mexico and start north. No matter where you cross you will never be believed to being from Europe.

Start a new life here with that kick as car.

Besides sounds like the US Government will be passing out permanent passes to live here before long.

Great Build.

First test drive. Still 10-15 small things on the to-do list, then cut & polish, pinstriping and C-stripes.
Drives like a rocket on rails though!
