Underbody Paint?

What is everyone using for underbody paint for durability and ease of cleaning? Has anyone used Lizard Skin or Spray-in Bed Liner for this application? If so, what are your results?

I took my car to a friend who sprays reflex bed liner. It turned out great. I did the front fenderwells also. You are going to hear some guys go against the bed liner due to added weight. I am going to take my car back to have the trunk done. Here are a couple pictures of my car:

The after pics show a med grey, but over the course of about a week dried to a dark grey as show in this pic:

What did you do to prep the underbody before applying the Lizardskin? Have you noticed any significant difference since application?

Basically, steam cleaned the underside of my car about 3 times. Sprayed the entire underside down with a liberal coating of brake clean (about 6 cans worth) and then followed up with wiping it down with a rag soaked in Laquer Thinner until the rag came back w/o dirt on it (was a pain but got it actually clean).

I still had a couple areas that peeled off after or shortly after I painted. But I think that was due to not being really clean once I went back and recleaned those spots and reapplied the Lizard skin they came out fine.


As far as looks go, it certainly looks 10x better than it did before. My car isn't a show car so I don't need that "perfect" undercarriage, but I did want it to look a bit better than it was. Plus I had just mini-tubbed so I wanted to do something to make the new tubs match the rest of the underside of the car so that the mini-tubbing didn't stick out (going for the sleeper look).

if you do a google search for home made Lizard skin, you can find the info on making an alternative that's proving to work well. I'm poor and prefer to do things myself versus buying a kit or having someone else do it for me so I find alternatives that save me money. Might not save me any time though

Probably a better way to go, wasn't really an option for me since I had everything apart at the time and hadn't really planned on painting the underside.

Summit has LizardSkin for a pretty reasonable price and their 11.95 handling fee to ship makes it pretty cheap.

I also didn't use even 1/2 the bucket of either the soundproofing formula or their ceramic heat coating so I am going use it on my interior floors and door pockets etc as well. By that time I figure I got my money's worth.

A hot rod builder near me (Charlotte, NC) uses a kit that's used for spray-on truck bedliners. He uses a clear kit and then tints it to match the paint. He also thins it out a lot so that it still has a little texture but doesn't have that obvious "bedliner look." I videotaped him spraying the underbody of a '60s Firebird and thought his work turned out really well. Thanks for posting the link to the video:thumbsup: . I just now got around to viewing it. I wonder how hard it is to color match. Also, how big of tip you might need.
Anyone else think this is something worth trying?

Id like to color match the under side but unfortunately. My car will be White. First time I get into it and BAM!!! there goes my nice clean undercarriage.
