Can you Paint over Bedliner?

I've sprayed Upol Raptor's Black Bedliner in the trunk area of my chevelle for durability but want to spray the correct spatter paint over it. Can I just scuff it and spray the spatter? thanks.

someone correct me if I'm wrong...But i think you could as long as you scuff it up good and use a good wax and grease remover to clean it, the paint should stick.

What does Upol have to say about it? I know when Chris reshot my trunk (Raptor over Raptor) it had major bonding issues! But then I can't verify how much prep was done.....:rolleyes:

Yep different from brand to brand, some are made for 'undercoating' that would accept a top coat, some would never work. I don't think many truck liners would take a top coat very well. Just check Upol spec. sheet.

The biggest problem is you really cannot do it wet over wet because they are 2 different products, one being oil base the other water base (in laymans terms). The bedliner needs to gas out before being top coated with a different product or the top coat will lock in the gases, and you have Anthony's problem.

If you let it dry it needs to be sanded but you have to figure out how to sand the bottom of the orange peal bumps without smoothing it slick.

So my advise, learn to love it.

The Upol tech sheets say nothing about painiting over it except with another coat after 60m flash. They also say you can touch up later with no problem. I can call the UK office to ask. I sent Upol an email and will let you all know.

I suspect if I scuffed it (versus sanding out the course texture), it would stick but we'll have to wait and see... Maybe I'll test it on the top side of the floor pans that I have applied Upol as well. Afterall, that will be covered with carpet ;)

upol can be re applied at any time after you wax and grease remove it, i have done it and it works.
that said it says nothing about top coating with other products.
if i were you i would spray a test panel with raptor then use an adhesion promoter like bulldog then spray spatter paint and see how it holds up to abuse on the test panel, if it holds up go for it, if it doesn't you just saved yourself a whole bunch of mess

Ok here's what you do. Get the tintable Raptor Coating and do the splatter effect yourself using what ever colors you desire. This is what Chris did in my trunk...bad color choices? Yes....that's why I asked him to shoot it black. As you can see though you can simply splatter differant colors to get the factory feel...but be far more durable!

anthony that is not a good example, i am sure you know that but raptor liner is much finer finish and not nearly so lumpy, he applied it with the wrong gun or something, here is how it should look

I don't think the blue looks all that bad as regular trunk paint isn't that nice to begin with. Haven't used it in years and it never looks right to me.

There is also usually adhesion problems but I think that is due to it's ingredients?? Am I wrong in remembering something about what it is comprised of or???? that actually gives it that spatter look.

Can you use the UPOL colors to make up that spatter pattern you want using UPOL as a base? There are other products that are textured that are made to be painted.

That is what was done to my trunk....three differant blues layered for the splatter look....
