View Full Version : Friday filler thread: How many countries have you been to?
In talking with the guys like Nigel, Jahn and others from Europe... and how we have members from Australia, China, Canada, England, Sweden, etc, it made me wonder who here is the most traveled. Also, what's the worst country to drive in? I've been told Ireland is a VERY tough place to drive.
Personally, I've in 3 different countries. US, CA, and Mexico. I'm a real world traveler. lol

Not traveled very much.
Only been to Jamacia, and the Bahamas. One honeymoon to each place. I might have to a divorce again and remarry so I can travel to someplace else.
Just kidding

Scott I assume you are talking about the People's Republic of California? :D
I walked across the border to Mexico a couple years ago and vowed I would never do that again. Otherwise I have never left.

Used to spend a lot of time from around 1990 to 96 at Ford Europe site at Palmela, Potugal. It was cool because Estoril is not far away and there always seemed to be something going on there. Otherwise, the only other notable is Japan, where I have been 5 times since 1988. By far, it's my favorite foreign country to visit (as long as I'm not paying!)

Hmm.... I guess I could say that I've left the country. I went to Vancouver, BC when I was 17, but didn't drive there. Wish I did. Would have saved a year off my life from my mom's driving. I also went to Guatemala. Once. When I was 6 months old. If I drove there, I don't remember it.
Come on down to Downtown San Francisco. You'll see some of the worst driving in the world there, and you'll be forced to do the same. I hate going there. I'd rather drive through Arizona and New Mexico again than drive through San Francisco as much as I have to.

I can not compete with Scott, but close in terms of Asian countries. My total is a measly 23. Oh, Guam does not count- that is a US territory. ;)
My proofing may be bad here, but I think I can add a few new ones to the list-
Burma (Myanmar) The true insertion point of the enema (IMO)
Bangladesh
Vietnam
Cambodia
Nepal
If I were rating places on the "I feel bad for the people living there" list, Myanmar takes the cake for all I have seen. Bangladesh not far behind and India in general trailing by a hair.
I can say from many years living abroad- Be proud of your country and your heritage. No matter where you are from, it is home and it is where your family is from.
On the other hand, the neat thing about having Chinese parents in law is that all communication is filtered by 1- Wife or 2 – employees who work with father in law at son in law’s company. They love me; if they knew what a jerk I really am, they would likely call the police. ;)

Wow! We've got some globetrotters here. Not me. Just USA, Canada, Greece and Ireland. But if you count Las Vegas casinos as countries I've been to Italy (The Venetian), France (The Paris), Monaco (The Monte Carlo) and you may as well include interplanetary travel (The Star Trek Experience at the Hilton--I'm no trekkie, but I've walked thru there to get to the tram)

I'm one of those geeks that puts a little push-pin in the world map I have in my office. When I'm gone, I let my family know by referring to pin color & number. As expected- my kids are very good at geography. I'm also assembling books for them that represent the world- money from each place, trinkets, usually something of cultural significance that reflects each place.

And by far the worst driving experience I have ever had was in Houston Texas. Followed by Penang, Maylasia.
Greece - lived there for three years
Germany
England
Ireland
Netherlands
Italy
It's a toss up between Greece and Italy for the worst driving. Stoplights in Greece are interesting. Three lane highways turn into 6 or 7 lanes as mopeds and motorcycles squeeze between cars as they move their way to the front. When the light turns green, it's a loud chorus of horns honking as everyone fights to get back into those three lanes. And the traffic circles...Yikes! Accidents were a frequent occurance. How I made it three years without so much as a fender bender, I'll never know.
My wife and I drove from Rome to Venice. City driving in Italy is chaotic. Narrow streets with barely enough room to get through. Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcylists coming at you from all directions, all at a frantic pace. But it all seems to work. It's like controlled chaos. If you don't drive like an Italian, you'll get eaten alive. The Autostrade, on the other hand, is fabulous. The left lane is used for PASSING. You don't see idiots camping out in the left lane. Driver's signal their intentions. Trucks can only use the right hand lane. It's great. The country roads are also a treat especially going through the mountains. Best enjoyed in a Ferrari! You can actually rent one over there if you have enough coin.
Wow, some serious travelers! I can only imagine how many Shots you guys have gotten! :D Ouch.
