guys
its so hard to figure out why this is happening.
i really was ready to finish the car but this killed it for me ...
it was a cool idea..now thats what it will be .
i have to do something ....i have my 65 rambler 4dr i could hang these parts on...havent been able to get real excited about that.but different.
i have a 71 chevelle rolling frame i bought to blast and paint and resell.
i could buy a new 9 inch housing/axles and throw my ls1/4l60 in and bolt my wilwoods brakes on that...wait for a decent body to come along...hell,i dont know .just sucks ....trying to change focus after all this time and effort
ive been searching local craigslist trying to find a deal on something that i might want to do.
im gonna sell off my rambler specific parts and make a little back to throw at the next project......i just have to do something.

I felt exactly the way you do a couple times in the past. It sucks when you have to rework the same thing over and over.
When you start your next project I hope you don't take it to the same guys shop that left this one out to rust.

If it's any consolation Tom, I was set to sell my HO SS to a car collector who was going to fly out to check out my car in person before buying. I had that locked up and another car, a LeMans Blue '69 Camaro SS 396 4 speed with console, that I was going to put some money as a down payment on. Had a deposit on the 69 and everything is cool right?!?! WRONG!!!!:wow:
The fiance tells me, you can sell the HO SS, but you're not buying another car!! So, we go at it for a while and needless to say, I do not have my '69 SS, which I am dying to buy "EVENTUALLY".:willy: I was going to bring the car to COMP SPEC in Walpole, where "KARMA" is being taken care of and have them do my list of "pro-touring" goodies.
Anyways, what I am trying to say is, you have the car, just keep at and think about the car being completed and being able to drive it!!
GOOD LUCK!!!!

I've known Tom for a long time...I'm ignoring the request to "not talk you out of it..." and I'm going to TALK YOU OUT OF IT!!!!!!!!!!!
You've been at this too long to give up now. That rust is treatable...you had to sand it all again anyway. Just a test to see how commited you are.
Now...get out there, treat it...sand it...and let's go for a ride in this thing soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't make me drive up there and fix it for you! :lateral:

Not to get in to personal business and I don't know the reality of your situation but all kidding aside boulder69 has a point. Been there married that wasted 5 years with a woman like that and 2 more years getting back on my feet and collecting tools she sold off for pennies.
I now have a wonderful wife and daughter. My wifes loves and supports me and my car addiction. If you have a fiance already trying to control things like that it only gets 10 times worse.

My Fiance goes with me to every race and car show and loves it. She even started racing her own RC truck that she bought with her money. Yeah I have to wrench on it to, but aleast I don't have to bank roll the hole operation also. I think I might keep shopping for another girl, they are few and far between, but they are out there.

Don't give up man.
If you could just put it out in a good sandstorm with the friends car that put it out in the rain you could solve 2 problems with one sandstorm.
It's a good way to find all of the high and low spots.
POR-15 will stop it, it's what it was made for and just about the only thing it works for. It really does take rust to make it work.
Some parts for my car had to be totally replaced because they were beyond rust. Thin air is hard to work with.

TOM....
Come on.... If a guy like me can take 30 plus years to finish a car. Endure the health issues that I have occurred then this is just a small bump in the road. I'm a big fan of this project and you. I have been from the start.
Always take the positive approach. Look at it this way, better to learn about the rust issues now before body and paint were completed. Then you would have wasted some big bucks.
If there is a will there is a way!

hi roger
i didnt have a rust issue..i had areas that had not been exposed to weather until water ran across or between them.this was mostly at panel overlaps where you can get into with anything but liquid..
i have been given instruction to spray a product in until it runs between the panels and the bare now surface rusty metal inside the car.its supposed to be the answer to the problem .i hear builders use liquid rust converter all the time for areas like this ..i had never heard any builder speak of using a rust converter for areas they cant get to any other way.
ill try it .....maybe ill look like an ass again.....

I have always used a product called Rust Seal to take care of rust that is too much of a pain to strip. See the pictures below for encouragement. Its pretty easy stuff to use, you brush it on, let it sit for about a half hour and repeat. Then hose off all the extra. It converts the rust to a primer like coating. This is must easier than stripping all the rust off those hard to get to areas. I have been frustrated to the point you are at, but its all worth it when its done. You will not even remember the frustration when its all done.

GUYS
i have tried to give up on this build .as ive shown .i guess before i go crazy about some issue on the car i should consult with you guys first.
the start of the post was me throwing in the towel after finding my gutted car had ended up out in the rain at a friends shop while on vacation.so next day i picked it up and brought it home.i talked about this with several people.let it sit for a little bit.i really thought i had been given a sign of this thing is just too much. maybe it is but as i looked to put the parts on something else its just another p.i.a. situation.i have most of what i need for this car .its the little things that will be the parts that drag it on now.guess im just gonna keep trying.
so i ordered some stuff and sprayed into the areas where water went down/between to neutralize that situation.
ive worked the drivers qtr panel out to the point i think its real close . wet sanded it today to get a sheen and see how i did .its close, i need to prime and block it a couple more times before its ready for color...
so i changed the post title and im gonna keep working on it..

Tom,
I know where you are at. I've been there a few times myself. Some projects, no matter how hard you work, fight back. And, just when you think it couldn't get any worse, or when you think the worse is behind you, something completely throws you for a loop. These are the tough ones, but also sometimes, the most rewarding. Whatever you do, good luck with it. :lateral:

guys
i have no shame so heres the latest on me and my project.
i worked on the car alot in december just didnt post.
i did finish my qtr panel...most of the car is wetsanded primer..
i had to get a new job last week..i was in the construction industry and i had it pretty good the last few years.its now a dead industry here.ive been out of work for about 3 months.i had to sell the ls1/4l60 to help make it through...that sucked but i needed the money. so i was lucky and found a "decent" job about a week and a half ago.not the money im use to but its was the best i have been able to find.
i am building a body cart. i have the steel and casters..i just found a deal on a travel trailer frame/dual axle setup that i will modify to haul my car around and ill pick it up this weekend.so nowthe plan is to save and buy some paint and spray it so i can start putting the car together.i dont know what im gonna do for a motor/trans at this point .i wont have the money to replace the ls1 combo.last year i was able to buy whatever i needed for the most part but now its about just trying to survive and squeek out a rolling car .i just cant seem to give up no matter how things go.even if it wont turn out as i had planned.
all you guys have helped push me to keep on trying and i have never wanted to give up.sometimes it seemed like the thing to do but after almost 6 years having this car i cant stop no matter how tough things are.i want to be able to turn the key and drive this thing one day ,just to say i never gave up.
where there is a will there is a way as the saying goes.

Tom thanks for the update! Glad to hear you finally found a job! Even if it's just to pay the bills...that's piece of mind right there! Sounds like you have made dome good progress even with the holidays eating up time...good job!!
The nice thing is that you know the LSx motor will fit and now you need to just focus on getting the rest of the car painted and together. Don't stress about not having a motor right now, that will come in time!
Keep your chin up we're all pulling for you!!

Tom I am so sorry to hear this. Times like this you have to do what's right for you. I've been through both and I know it isn't an easy place to be. I wish I had words that would make it all make sense and better, but sadly there are none. Just do your best to keep moving forward...even if you have to crawl to make progress. Take this how you want. I don't feel divorse is a bad thing. I think you will find someone who will make you feel how you should feel and she will support you no matter what. Your now ex-wife wasn't the one. Time will go bye and you will find a woman that will make you see how good things can be. And it will feel amazing. You will be more motivated and have a great outlook on life. I know things suck right now, but I feel that this sets you up to be way more happy then you have ever been.
I'm not a motivational speaker, I just know how much crap you've been through lately and how you wanted to give up, but you bounced off the ropes and kept swingin'. I'm pulling for you and I think everyone else is on this site. Go get em.

You are absolutely correct here... while any two people can make a marriage work, no one person can!
The best thing you can do for your daughter is to always be her dad. Don't get involved in petty stuff with your ex, and never talk bad about her or her choices.
If you want a great book to help you out on the "next one," pick up a copy of Love and Respect by Eggerichs Emerson. It has a Christian bent to it, but even if you don't practice Christianity, the advice given in the book is fantastic.
Don't give up guy, remember, you cannot control the things that happen to you, but you can control they in which you react to those things.

Hey Bro. I can totally relate. I'm getting divorced as well. I lost my last job 2 years ago and have been trying to build my freelance photo business, which has been going well but even without the layoff and such, we had been having problems for a long time. I have two boys to think about. It sounds like we had the same issues. She didn't want to work on the marriage either. We were fine as long as I did everything. Somehow she wanted me to work less and make more money while trying to build a business. But this was only such a minor part of it. I guess what I'm trying to say is that, i understand. Keep your head up. It'll be a tough road for a while, but believe me, it gets easier.

Thanks for the compliment. I have followed this build for a while. It would be a shame to not see it thru. I would definately proceed with much caution. My ex has tried to lay traps for me, I am glad I had the clearity to not fall for it. Just be careful and think about what's best for you and your kids. Taking care of #1 is the most important.

Don't give up- You'll kick yourself down the road. I've come so close to doing the same, seeing as how I haven't been home for more than a month at a time since the fall of 2006. My 'Bird is waiting patiently for me to get back & drop that 4.2 in it.

i would love to finish the car . it sucks to get sooo close but
im out of work again.the job market here sucks hind tit.the two industries i have worked in have gone to hell....automotive and construction.
both are dead ....because they fueled each other here. cant sell my housse because values have fallen off bad and ive been in it 2 years .
so the only thing i have left is all my new goodies to sell and keep things afloat.i wont get rid of the car because i wouldnt want to ever see anybody finish it but me .just a hang up i have.
family life is back on track .
working/testing some small business ideas with my wife ..seems to be going pretty good so far..
for all of you out there that have been effected by the economic situation i feel for you big time .....cause it blows trying to make real money without a specailized profession thats in need.

since selling almost everything but the rolling shell and the new exterior goodies for the car im gonna go a different direction. i have had alot of time to look at the car..not good :_paranoid , because i want to rework almost the entire floor of the car .i have to buy a bead roller.
the car has crap for ground clearance i wanna push the motor/trans up and back in the car .i need more room for exhaust and i dont like the way i did the tubs/shock mount /rear floor of the car ... i have learned a ton since starting this project and have picked up many ideas from all of you guys . steel prices are pretty good and i might as well try and go for it..

Good to hear about the new job Tom!! I just went over 21 years in the AF a couple of weeks ago and originally thought I would get out after 20. I think I will try and hang in there for another year or so with the job market the way it is.
Chris, I'll hit 24 in Oct and feel exactly the same way! I thought I was going to retire last May and am now planning on staying until HYT in 2013... unless I screw up and get promoted... then I'll stay for 30!

WOW
kind of an update, after a difficult two years
The rambler body is moving tomorrow for the first time in two years..
I took a camper trailer frame and modified it to mount the rambler body on.(no suspension) , Im wanting to start over.:willy: not that i wanted to end the last time but wont go back into that story.
Im gonna cut it up even more this time . ive learned alot since i started it .I dont look at it the same. Some metal work has to be redone and the suspension has to change but i guess thats why they make cutting weels and welders. i have both..:_paranoid ADD bead roller and some practice and see what i come up with

After seeing all the metal fab i have over the last couple years, i cant leave this car the way it is. I have to admit it has clearance issues with the circletrack style stuff that was under it. I never could see it being driven very much with what was there. I wanna be able to Drive it without issue. I know it wont happen overnight but im going to cut everything off from the firewall forward and alot of the floor. Remake the underhood area and the rear wheeltubs (wider) and floor/trunk. Mod the dash with a metal dash pad.I love the metal fab part of building and have ideas for a new and much improved car. Its not about having the fastest or best car on the site its about taking what ive learned and having fun getting to a new level.
new shrinker/stretcher showed up today...YES

THOSE who have seen his car or his sons(millertime179) car in an autocross know THEY FLAT OUT WORK . His subframes/clips save you money and perform so i have chosen to change my car completely. Anybody who can build a car/suspension in thier OWN shop and Give D** a run for the front get my attention and buck. No BIG NAME decals or BS just brains and metal coming together.

The firewall set back should be quick.Went to Home depot they had a closeout sale on the 1 wheeled firewall's insert's. Think we will JB weld it in.It has a quick curing time and good color match. The bathroom drain tube should work for a trans tunnel after we split it in half. Also had the stainless towel rod's/seats mount's on sale also. One stop shopping for all your Hot Rod need's on a tight budget.
That's freaking hilarious Scott
Glad to see you are making progress Tom

Guys
MY UPDATE
well ive spent the last 9 months getting in shape. I feel GREAT and my mind is right again.. :D
Divorce is over! I HAVE MY Daughter half the time and im not stroking checks! Wasnt cheap but its over and i got what i wanted.
My job is the same but they are giving me back hours now after corporate cut hours across the board late last year. Im still looking for a better job but things are getting better.
My RAMBLER is going to be moved from where its been stored. Maybe this weekend. Baby steps. I see there might be some light at the end of the tunnel. Hope its not a train..

Thanks Guys, i feel great. Im really glad to get moving again.
I move the body yesterday.. I havent look at it in a year..
I want to take a sawzall to it right now.. and fire up a welder..
wow, even after all this down time something still make me want to get this thing rolling again. Only this time i have some real Guidance from my bud
Scott Mock. I was really lead down the wrong road before with the car and bought myself an education in car building.. I think we all have done that.
So this time the shell will be the only thing i keep. The rest is scrap metal.
So a frame will be built and go from there... Dont look for progres pics tomorrow .. wont be any.. ill keep you posted :lateral:
