View Full Version : What's your winter project?
Since it's about that time for a lot of us northerners to put the cars away for the season... what are you doing to your car this winter?
I don't have a lot planned, just little things like hiding the coils, getting an Auto Meter in-dash digital shift light, etc. I'm also thinking about being proactive with a new clutch. But I think my main focus is to finally finish off the inside of my garage.
What's keeping you busy this winter?

First of all finishing off my new 3 car garage (25x35) since I am retiring from the military in a couple weeks and moving back to TX. But I do have plans for the car like installing some B-Quiet sound deadner, a new shifter, some of Autometer's new American Muscle gauges when they come out and Digitails LED tail light kit.

Since its the mid 40's right now, with a 10 knot north wind, Its' really not that cold, I was born in CT. and love the cold weather, I sat on the couch with my LS1 harness in my lap marking the parts to be removed!
Since its nice and cool and DRY in FL, this is when I really get the most of my work done, will tear down the rear this week, start drilling out the spot welds for the mini tubs, and time for a little engine mock up work......
forgot to say I was watching the missing person show with Lapagla can't remember the name...

building a 40x80x12 shop with 25x40 living quarters.
Although, it may roll into May before we are fully finished and ready to move in.
Luckily here in OK, we have pretty nice winters with only a few snows a year. Once the shop is done, I will be able to get back to work on the 68'!

Finish the car!!! The car left home 2-weeks ago to go back to my engine builder to finish plumbing fuel and brake lines and finish some wiring that was above my abilities. I talked to him yesterday and just about done. Next on the list was installing the exhaust system and start the car for the 1st time in over 2-years!! Once it's running it's off to DMV to get inspected and then to the interior shop to have the door panels re-covered and rear seat re-done and sound system installed. By spring time it will be time to put the hammer down and drive it! I Hope!!

As odd as it sounds: finish my A/C installation. The boys and girls at Vintage Air (shout out to Rick Love!) and Prodigy have been fantastic with tech support and design help.
I may actually have a running car again in a week or so. It's been down since before Pigeon Forge (I threw some of it together so I could drive it for that weekend).
Also: I'm re-routing my fuel lines so they don't get close to the headers, and then I'm installing an Aeromotive fuel pump controller.

Not my cars body...my body. Too much social activity with hops and barley has added a few pounds over the summer. I have been getting up at 5:30 am and getting back into the gym.
Like you Scott, I am going to hide my coils.
Bigger front bar, different front shocks. Maybe even a torque arm in my future.

Since I have no money I'll probably just sit and stare at it this winter. Maybe put on some music. Couple cold ones. Box of tissue.

Since there is already 2" of snow on the ground here, winter project time has officially started.
On the OneLap car I need to pull the transmission to find out what is going on there, I am going to replace my fuel line with solid line, I am going to tidy up some of the things that were hurried for SEMA, and when the transmission goes back in I want to rework the exhaust to get a bit more clearance. I need to work on the traction control so that we can start dialing that in and I need to work on some programming of the IQ3 and add some sensors here and there.
I also need to start on my wife's car - a factory '67 RS that will be getting an ATS Chicane-LM subframe conversion and probably one of Speedtech's torque arm rear suspensions.
Winter's here are really long...

I've got some changes going on for the Chevelle, stuff that if I had a "do-over" would do differently. ;)

Ideal plans include a lot of metal work:
quarters,
rear bumper work,
tail panel replacement
shaved drip rails,
floors,
we will see how much I can actually get done...

stuff that if I had a "do-over" would do differently. ;)That's what my A/C and fuel routing is all about too.
Here's some advice for any car builder that eventually wants air conditioning: do it first. The evaporator, compressor, drier, and condenser locations should all be worked out before putting in custom firewalls, floors, and roll cages. Maybe everybody knew that but me. :faint:

Nice thread Scott!! Unfortunately for me though winter brings the bad weather which severely impacts my work, which means a ton of OT.
My plans though when I don't have to work is start fabbing the core support and air intake, fab and the dash, send it to Ironworks for headers & exhaust, button up all the loose ends and hopefully have to Jim (aka Mr. Smoothie) by Spring to finish up the paint. Don't hold your breath on that one though

Build new dash with Stack ST-700-SR multifunction tach/display (parts on order)
Unexpected projects:
Remove freshly broken Gen 1 SBC (http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=17393)
Remove FAST EFI
Sell all Gen 1 SBC-specific stuff
Order new boost-ready LS2 "kit" from Kurt Urban
Assemble new LS2
New ECU & Wiring harness
Build turbo setup around new LS2

My winter project? Installing a LS1 engine in the stock (rear) location of my corvair mated to a porsche 911 transmission. Bolting up some wilwoods from Prodigy so's I can actually stop the thing, and possibly a better, more permanent flat black/ gloss black paintjob. And i gotta patch my quarter panel. Should be awesome when done.

Winter?
I'll be plugging along on my build http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=14441 .
I hope to have the subframe connectors, tubs and rear suspension in by around mid-February so I can take advantage of an opening in my cage-builders schedule.
Then the amateur bodywork follies will begin while I save $$$ for an engine/trans.
I was planning on a Procharger but things have changed...
Now its the following:
DSE mintubs
wheels/tires
brakes
seats
NX kit

Having a new home and workshop built on some property. The house is being built on 1.7 acres of heavily wooded land, we are trying to keep as many trees as possible. The house is 3,200 sq-ft, has a 4-car attached garage on the left side. 1.5 story with a movie theater and billiards room upstairs. So far, they have the framing and roof completed. I'm planning on building a 40x60 shop on the back half of the property for my cars.

Homemade panoramic view from the street (street is actually straight, not curved)

This view is looking straight down my future driveway. That is the garage on the side of the house. If you go back another 200 ft the lot is cleared back there for a shop to be built behind the trees.

That was the winter plan. I had a whole punch list of small stuff for the Z. Oh well, maybe PT2010

Wow, damn nice house, Tony.

Nice home Tony!
I got my firebird back from a cage builder last night. I need to install the fire systems do a lot of work to get the interior put back together.
I got my Malibu back from another guy that did a horrible horrible job installing a simple roll bar. If I didn't have so many things going on I'd sue the guy for taking my car for 2 1/2 years and making a mess of it. I have to cut all the bars out. I'll patch the floors etc later when I have time.
I'm closing my business after almost 25 years to move to a warmer climate. http://www.connpost.com/ci_10986569?IADID=Search-www.connpost.com-www.connpost.com So I have the whole "going out" sale and then dismantling my shop and all the dispays etc and liquidating everything.
Then I'm going to drive the cars to Florida to my new home. Drive down, fly back a few times to move the cars.
The new house was burglarized, flooded, and then became mold infested about a year and a half ago after I moved all my stuff there. I lost everything in the house except the cars in the garage. Ins didn't cover personal belongings and covered less than half of the cost to fix (after fighting with them for a year) I had a mold remediation company gut the house, remediate, and sheetrock. I will need to do floors, electric, plumbing, kitchen cabinets/counters, sinks, toilets, showers painting etc.
I'll have a very busy winter! Oh and I'll need to find new employment!
