My name's Ben, I'm 38, born in New York, grew up mostly near West Palm Beach Florida, and now live near Provo, Utah. I'm married 12 years now, got 4 kids from 10yrs to 6 months, and I love cars.
I started drawing cars around age 12 and by high school was pretty confident with my skills. I hated regular classes and barely passed but loved art and always got A's there. I had an art teacher my junior year that put a stop to me drawing cars (which I did for evey project :unibrow: ) because as she said, "there's no money in automotive art". I was pretty discouragerd and pretty much lost interest in drawing. Drag racing replaced it as my hobby and by age 21 I had built an 11 sec Nova that was my daily driver. At age 25 I pulled my head out and moved to Utah for college. I attended graphic design classes at the junior college anticipating transferring to BYU once I got my GPA up. The head of the department saw some of my older car art. After talking about it she realized my passion for cars and my mechanical abilities and suggested I get into the Industrial Design/Transportation Design program over at BYU. I never heard of Industrial Design and checked into it. I transferred, joined the program, and was stoked about drawing cars again. By graduation time I think the folks from GM, Ford, & Honda that worked with us on projects were pretty much sick of my retro based designs. I realized I had little interest in designing new cars and fresh out of school I got a job doing graphic design in Utah. I've been doing old car art on the side since then as well and am now trying to make it a full time gig.
I started doing my art by hand, but now pretty much everything is Illustrator and Photoshop. I also like doing fine art working with pencil and watercolor but can't find much time to do it anymore. I also try to find time to work on my car projects now and again. I still have the Nova, am slowly building a G-machine out of a 79 Cutlass wagon, and also have a restomod Nova collecting dust. I've worked most of my life in auto parts stores, speed shops, tire stores and in a shop restoring muscle cars. Eventually I'd like to open a small resto/hot rod shop and start building some of my own designs.
Here's a face with a name...

Good lookin crew you've got Ben, looks like a handful.
I'm Colter. I didn't start drawing cars until I was like 17 or 18 I think. I drew everything else though. Of course at that time it was all about the comic books and I thought I was going to be a comic book artist one day ... not so much. I still go back to those days every once in awhile. I never learned to draw cars, I just started doing it once I was shown the muscle car light ... which happened to be at the same time I was in college learning to use Ai. The school I attended was across the street from the high school so I did both at the same time and got high school credit, if that helps explain the age problem with that story. Anyway, it wasn't until finding places like this a few years back that I have started to try to learn the more traditional ways of automotive art, but really I'm a commercial/graphic artist, not really a fine artist. I like to think of myself as a problem solver more than anything. So I envy you traditional artists sometimes. Before that, I was just drawing people's cars, learning their details, trying to learn what made them so appealing to me.

Well, it's not exactly comic art but it's similar and it's about all I've had time to work on lately. My brother did the line art, I did the colors. I've got a long ways to go but I dunno if I'll ever get there or not.

HA! well i appreciate it but it's true. Apparently my brain relates to steel better than organic subject mater. I think I did ok with the girl (she's for some contest btw, I dunno who she is) but the final product doesn't really live up to what I had in my head. I dunno how to explain it I guess. I can live with my cars when I put them along side some of the car artists that I admire (and just "live with"), but my digital painting next to some guys ... craptastic.

Hi I'm lemorris.
I know a lot of you already from other places. 406nova sent me an invite.
I live in Tucson AZ and work as a multi-media developer fulltime then I go home and draw cars and stuff.
My site: http://www.lemorris.com/site/?page_id=117
My wife: http://www.caroleaharris.com
My daughter: http://www.spoonychick.deviantart.com/gallery/
I don't have a lot of muscle car stuff but I hope to get more. Been playin VW for a long time so I thought I'd branch out a bit.
I worked as a shirt printer for 7 years and as a result I still do a lot of shirt art. The methods I use are mostly geared towards shirt separations and a lot of limited pallet stuff. Many times I convert the channels to cmyk and get prints and they come out fine. Anyway, I'll lurk and post where appropriate.
Lotta nice work here, very impressive.

Hey, I'm Ron.
Born and raised in a small Kansas town in '69, currently live outside of Wichita. Grew up an only child so drawing took up alot of my time. Exposed to hot rods at an early age so started drawing cars out of stacks of late 60's and early 70's Hot Rod magazines when I was pretty young. Attended a two year "Commercial Art" program in the late 80's. All hand skills - no computers!Currently I'm the Art Director for a vinyl graphics corp. in Wichita. Been designing marine, RV and automotive aftermarket graphics for about 17 yrs. Started using Photoshop at work in the early 90's and just started applying what I learned to what I loved most, cars! I really love traditional hot rods, but am not stuck in the past and believe in moving forward. Here's a few examples of stuff I've done that may be okay for this forum.

Ron- Nice photochopping!! Got family near Wichita, we may be visiting this summer, if we do I'll try to drop by and say hey. Welcome aboard.
Both of you- Get in on our monthly contest (photochops count too!), coming up soon...

Lil/Big Al Saenz here :thumbsup:
Been absent for a while, but getting back into things, had to deal w/ some personal things
I'm really trying to focus on 2D "real" looking work and or 2D "artistic" look
I've mostly done car using channel separations. It gives the car a semi toon coloring look. I like the look but I want to try for a more real style.

Hi! I was referred here by 406nova (but have trolled around here before, because I have a crush on Ben Hermance's art lolz) (oh and Lemorris is my brotha from anotha motha, in case you were wondering).
I like unicorns, long walks on the beach, and foot rubs. Oh, and beer :cheers:

My gallery is in my sig - I'm kind of a 'Jill of all Trades'. Started out doing 'toons of my mini truck club members' cars, then paint designs for Doug Starbuck. Then I met my ex, who at the time worked 'in the industry' (automotive aftermarket) and he introduced me to people... well I networked, got better at what I did, and started getting published.
Come 1998, I wanted to learn how to do shirt layouts in the Mac, so I got a G3... taught myself Illustrator and Photoshop, and was thrown in the deep end of the pool at Mattel as a temp graphic designer for Hot Wheels, which led to a long stint in the die cast industry, then a couple 'normal' graphic design gigs (turd polishing), then a brief time at a technical clothing design firm, and now back to 'turd polishing'. All this time I've done the 'car stuff' on the side.
So now I guess you could say my skillset includes:
* Vehicle renderings! :)
* T-shirt design & seps
* Paint design
* Vinyl graphic/Wrap design
* Graphic design - logos, print media, ads, catalogs, etc.
* Web design
* Technical apparel & product design
* Custom illustration
* Project car help - including proposals - I've consulted a few peeps on this in the past, since the ex and I built a dozen or so cars for SEMA, etc.)
I can also make a mean avocado sammich, and my container garden is the shiznik. :rofl:
Hi everyone :) :thumbsup:

I have a photo shop request. I am planning on doing some body mods on my race car when I get done with my charger. What I have is a 2003 neon srt-4, that I started running in time attack events last season before I deployed.
I am planning on upping the hp a bit, and building a few things for it, to give a little better handling. I have already made a couple of aero mods to it, and would like to improve upon them. I would also like to run bigger wheels and tires for it. I already have in mind what I would like to do to it.
I just do not know anyone with enough photo shop skills, to make my vision come alive. If someone would like to help me, I would be more then happy to pay you for your time.
thank you, MANNY..
Hi all, name is Otis. I have been referred casually to the site on a handful of times by a few people. A few days ago a friend from another site pushed me over here with nothing but great things to say of all of you. When I first logged on and noticed some of the names of members I was a little taken back. Quite a few of the names I have been following around the web, unbelievable artists.
i have had an interest in art from childhood, ashamed to say I had a rather extensive Graffiti career thru high school, found and fell deeply in love with the tattoo world from dads biker friends by two, dipped around a little working at tattoo parlors in my twenties, got married had kids, quit drawing cuz my hands hurt from this thing called work.
Cars, well pretty much loved them from the day I road home in one back in 73. Really tho, have loved cars and everything about them for as long as I can remember. I remember seeing Kris' Camaro concept in the rags and thinking "What a gig, to be able to make those cars on a computer at home, for money" Needless to say at that time having an email account was the extent of my computer savvy.
Long story short, last year a friend gave me PS CS2 for Christmas, I played with it a little, thought wow this is fun, PCSed to Ft Bragg, put it down to learn the ropes of being a stay at home dad. Picked it back up a few months ago and have been really playing with it hours and hours almost every day. Made a few cool pics that met me a few cool people, a few of which have commissioned me to work something up, ( feels great, but at the same time, I didn't realize how little attention to detail I was paying on my own stuff). Working on a picture for compensation sheds a whole new light on detail.
Any way just wanted to say hi, and let all of you know how honored I am to share space with you. You guys are some of the best conceptual artists around, and it is truly an honor.

Welcome Otis, great story. I've done a lot of tattoo designs for buddies in the past. There's some amazing artist in that industry too. I hear you on the "life happens" thing. Sometimes I wish the day was a few hours longer so I could get more ideas on paper and still have time to play with the kids.
Now you have to post up some work!

Hey,
I'm Dan, Illustrator from MN. I started drawing cars at 3yrs old (I still have a couple framed above my drawing table). My teachers used to always tell my parents that artist can't make a proper living. So just to spite them I worked harder at it! :lol: All of my drawing start out as complete sketches by hand.
I grew up with idolizing people like Ed Roth, and Dave "Big" Deal and originally wanted to draw for Disney. I just couldn't give up the oversized garage for the toys :D

I just noticed I didn't put anything in here. I thought I did. I was born and raised in central Ohio. I can always remember drawing things. I remember drawing cars all through grade school and into high school. I also remember always building models. I would build them with my dad when I was young, and hobby had taken off from there. I majored in industrial design at my local art college all the way till I graduated. The funny thing how I never combined all of this until a couple of years ago. I started out doing drafting on the side for local companies, but it wasn't till I was working for an architect that the pieces started falling together. I get some jobs from a couple of local rod shops, some repeat customers and the occasional magazine article. I would like to get more jobs, but the family time s already crazy now as it is. I really enjoy the entire process from putting ideas down on paper, working them out realistically all the way to the final product. I would love to become a professional and do this full time, but that is a long road from here.
My work is done by hand, scanned into PS where I touch/clean it up and add things and finish it off. I use marker, pastels, colored pencils and ink by hand and only use a very limited amount of tools on PS. I remember looking at work done by people like Steve Stanford and Charlie Smith while growing up (and even Cartoons) and just being amazed at their work.
While I do not have a project at the current time, I look forward to the time I can get another one and have the people I have met through all of this do the work. I have had a couple of Chargers, but would like something smaller next time. I hope you enjoy my style and I look forward to hanging out here again.

Hello Lateral-g members, new to the website and wanted to introduce myself. I am 30 years old from Surrey, British Columbia. I have always had the car bug, love to tinker with design and mechanical aspects of the car hobby. I have been drawing cars in toon style for 15 plus years, focusing my talents on giving enthusiasts a scewed view of their car, truck or bike for a reasonable price or free. I look forward to drawing some projects posted on this site, building my portfolio in the process. My portfolio is viewable @ eyemechanic.webs.com (http://eyemechanic.webs.com)
