Then my wheels arrived !!!!!
It was a long wait to get the 20x12's..but it was worth it.!!!
I got them all mounted and put under the car. There is no rearend right now, so the rears are just sitting under there...
Front is 19x8 with a 245-35-19.....now seeing them on there, I probably could have gone with just a tad more sidewall. At the time I bought them...like 2 years ago....I wanted to make sure I got the front end low, but still be able to turn the car and still have some lip to the wheel etc etc.

The rear is a 20x12....it has a 4.5 inch lip..

I see your post shows the rotisserie.... I was too quick on the trigger...
Looks really good - and am thrilled to see the progress! It always reinvigorates "the builder" to get something "done". :woot:
Was thinking about your "speaker" issue.... you have cut off wheels - and a welder... you could (if you have the room) relocate the oval speaker "holes" over a bit to make some clearance? Or turn them on an angle?

This is the car at our ride height with just flat stock in place of the Shockwaves. Tim modified the front k-frame and rear mounts to get this ride height.
It sits BAD ASS!!!!....but I think I may need to raise the rear a tad. Just visually I think I'm gonna have a bunch of clearence issues with the rear end....hitting the trunk floor ...tubes hitting the frame. Nothing that cant be changed, but just more work...... I'm not sure if the specs on the shocks are different than i thought...I based the holes on the flat stock on the specs I found....or if Tim didnt try and drop the car once he set the ride height. He had the actual Shockwaves on there at the time....so I hope the issue is on my end.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/70%20Cuda%20Project%20Part%20II/IMG_4695.jpg
It will be a balance of getting the ride height right and not having to re-do the entire tunnel, make clearecne in the trunk for the the diff, and be able to get exhaust through there...we'll see. Right now, I can adjust some stuff and see what I can do...

I tried to come up with a bunch of ideas for the speakers..... there isnt much room towards the outside....plus I may run a cage and need some space for the downbars..... turning them at an angle wouldnt change anything since its the magnet that is the issue. I though about going smaller, but couldnt find a decent 3 way speaker that would work. Thought about rasing them up.....I though of a 100x different option but finally just went with this.....
I also did a rough trim on the original rear panel to fit the tubs. I'm planning on using them as a good starting place for the final ones. I think I should be able to use them as the base and add some fiberglass etc etc and then get them covered. If nothing else I use them as a template.

Rybar....some of the renderings Carter came up with did have the dark wheels, but those were just some ideas..... I'm still up in the air about paint, but I do know there will be a fair bit of billet etc, so I went with the brushed and polished.
I'm not a huge fan of the dark wheels look, but on the right car and with the right paint, they look awesome....but not on this project.

Time for an update...finally !!!!
I got my Moser Dana 60 through Frank at Prodigy, and got the final suspension all mocked up.... the final pinion angle isnt set but everything is pretty close. I did have to trim some of the rear crossmember to clear the center section at full drop, but didnt cut into the trunk. Getting the exhaust up and over should be real fun :)
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/70%20Cuda%20Project%20Part%20II/IMG_5218.jpg
Next was the T56 Magnum through Hurst Driveline conversions.... thanks Tony Edler and thank you Greg Weld ( he helped me avoid the sales tax hit :)...)
Since we channeled the front k-frame, I did end up having to cut up the tunnel again to get a decent engine angle.....it was so sad to have to cut up some of the wonderful Race Rodz fab work...I shed a tear...what a shame. It looks like I'll have to do more tunnel work to get the driveshaft in there....oh well
The pistol grip shifter is real cool....but kinda high....I'll probably cut it down once the interior is more complete.

Now the fun stuff....Once I got the rear end mocked up I was able to actually air the car up and down....oh baby !!!
This is the probable ride height. It will get fully dialed in once the car is all loaded up, but this should be real close. Its based on the Ridetech recommended shock length at ride height. Its also going to depend on if I got the BS on the front wheels nailed or not.... I wanted to be able to turn the car but not have the wheels sucked in real far. I'd love to drop it a tad more in front. At this ride height I have 6 inches at the engine crossmember and 5 at the frame

Yeah that plan changed :)
I had planned the auto when the Procharger/turbo was on the table...figured it was just a smarter choice....but always really wanted it to be manual. Once the big FI plans were set aside, I went back to what I really wanted to do from the beigining.

Amazing build! I've been following for a while now and I'm really blown away by everything you have done. What's your plan for the engine? I tried looking back through the thread, but still couldn't find any information.... have you figured that out?
I was using photos of your car to try and figure out how low I wanted to get my car. Ended up just going as low as I could with all the stock components. I think it's close to yours at ride height... but nothing compares to your car slammed!
keep it up!

Plans for the engine are using the Gen III 6.1 HEMI and making it into either a 426 ( to go with the HEMI theme) or all the way to a 440. Hoping for around the 600 HP range. Intake will be a Precision Metalcraft intake ( hate the stock one), FAST electronics, TTI headers (maybe shorties instead, not sure yet). As of right now, I'm stuck with all the stock accessories for the most part....there arent any aftermarket bracket set ups (i.e Front runner system etc) ...at least not ones I like. Charlies oil pan, etc etc.
Not 100% sure on who will be the motor builder....Arrington or Power Ported Performance.

Time for some updates....nothing staggering but still moving along.....
Got all my RideTech stuff mounted etc, so figured I would mount up the power suppy and get that layout finalized. Mounted the Optima in the trunk and started to mount all my ISIS stuff. My one comment about the ISIS set-up so far... there is a fair amount of "stuff" to find a space for and mount up....
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/70%20Cuda%20Project%20Part%20II/IMG_5781.jpg
Then it was on to mocking up the Hydroboost and clutch pedals etc. Since my car was an auto, I had to swap out the pedals, drill new holes for the clutch master linkage and cut a new hole in the firewall since we smoothed it all out and eliminated all the original factory holes. Tha was alot of measuring 10 times before cutting or drilling :) I aslo made the support bracket on the inside firewall bigger to stop any flex when I mash the clutch down.
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/70%20Cuda%20Project%20Part%20II/IMG_5289.jpg
The Hydroboost mounted up pretty well. I had to send it back once to get the firewall bracket swapped out since my car had power brakes originally but I accidently got the hydroboost bracket for manual brakes....had no idea the firewall mount would be different. I also mounted up a Ring Bros clutch master resevoir

Finnished up with my transmission crossmember. I messed with a couple of ideas but finally decided to just start off with the stock one and modify that. I hollowed out the center section and then made a new piece that slides inside the original "housing". It worked out pretty well. I got the tail of the tran up at a decent angle and left the crossmember tacked togther in case I want to mess with it some more.

Then it was time for the headers. I went back and forth on just doing shorties, but decided to just try the LT and see what happens. Since we raised the motor 1.5 inches, I was concerned about them hitting the floor.....and guess what.... they did. Unfortunately TTI wont allow me to return them since they are uncoated, so I just decided to keep them and modify whatever I need. I cut the mount flanges off and they fit but are pretty close to the floor. My plan is to just modify the floor to get some more space. They tuck up real nice and dont sit below the frame rails which is cool.

Then I got the steering linkage figured out. The angle on the middle joint is a little tighter than I wanted but I dont feel any bindng etc. I still have some room to fine tune it and still get decent clearence to the headers

Seats.... I went back and forth on seats for quite a while. Aftermarket vs junkyard. I love the Sparco, Corbeau, Recaro etc, but they are kinda pricey and I would end up recovering them anyway, so I decided to do the junkyard route. Looked at a ton of cars and finally found some seats I liked. They came out of a 98 Dodge Stealth. The are pretty comfortable and have alot of adjustment too. The were kinda of a PITA to mount....... the slider to the tunnel side was 1.5 inches higher than the outide one and my floor is just the opposite. I managed to figure out a way to mount them, but it aint the prettiest piece when you take a close look. I plan to do some stuff to hide the tunnel side mounts.
They do sit a tad high for a guy like me, but all the aftermarkets measured about the same. Once the headliner is in, when I wear a helmet etc, its gonna rub. For the average height it should be perfect.

Now the coolest part of what I've been working on...
About 2 years ago I contacted Jeff Davis at Precision Metalcraft about doing a custom intake for the modern HEMI. Through a friend, we sent a stock 6.1 HEMI intake to him so he could take all the measurments he needed etc and figure out some designs. So he came up with a design and made a prototype intake. Since my whole k-frame is raised, hood clearence is a concern. I know the stock intake will fit but the one Jeff designed is a tad higher. Jeff is such a nice guy, so I asked if he would be willing to loan me the protype to test fit and he said "no problem". It wicked cool and its a hell of a nice piece.....

You have the AAR Cuda hood so there is more clearance. So did it fit?
Also where did you send your valve covers? Looks like there missing.
DRJDVM's '69

So as anticipated the hood wont clear without some modifications. The bulk of the intake fits perfect, but the TB is a bit too high and forward to clear the scoop inlet on the AAR hood. Thankfully, we have some room to drop the TB back and down, so now we have some idea of what we need to move around. I will still likely need to modify the hood some, but hopefully we can move some stuff around to lessen the extent of the hood mods. We'll see....

My hope is to modify the intake in a way that gets me the clearence I need but not sacrafice the design so much that it screws with the performance of the intake.

Got my door poppers working.....did the recess in the rear tubs to get the quarter window glass to go all the way down....and a bunch of smaller stuff. But thats the big updates for now.
Next on the agenda is to start the exhaust. I'm still playing around with which muffler i want. There are so many different choices and everyone has a different opinion. Some love the Spintechs and other hate them....same with the Flowmasters etc etc.... and they all sound different on different cars. Its a tough choice..... PLus exahust in SS vs doing steel and getting it coated....
My hope is to get it back to Tim Bruning late this year/early next year to have some more stuff done....cage, finalize the rear suspension, front bumper and some other stuff

Car is looking great.
I can offer a little advise on the seats which you may or may not realize. When your looking at seats look at the floor pan in the car. Is it a raised floor pan, flat or suken. It looks like the seat you grabbed are from a sucken floor pan due to the kick up in the front.
There are seats out there that lay flat vs the seats you have that elevates your knees and then sinks you back & down. So if your looking for head clearence and not having numb legs due to the fact that your knee's are elevated (possible hitting the steering wheel) then take a look at the seats in s10 pick ups & blazers. The lay perfectly flat and will drop you down significantly. They also will make it more comfortable to push in the clutch pedal repeatedly.
The other concern would be is there enough room for you to actually push in the clutch pedal without hitting the steering wheel when you disengage the clutch.

I would have the Cage done locally near you. The cage has to be fit around you. You'd have to be there so Tim could place main hoop and cross bar. So there is enough clearance for your helmet and driving seat location.
Its best if your close by to test fit stuff a coule times before final welding it all together.

I think I'll be okay with the seats....but I can always switch to something else. I have a tilt column and the seats go back really far. Even bieng 6'3" I dont push them all the way back. I'm trying to locate a cheap junk steering wheel to mount up, so we'll see.
Bob
As for the cage..... I think Tim can get me all dialed in while I'm there. We can do a bunch of measurements etc etc. I also plan to make the next journey a family trip so we'll spend some time up in WA etc. So I may be able to come by on the way back down too. I'm not too worried. Being able to be there for each step is great, but not necessary. I'm trying to keep the number of builders/fab guys to a minimum.

Ned, if you bring the car back up to Bruning, have him build a set of the sheet metal covers he made for the E-Ticket for you. They would look perfect with the Precision Metalcraft intake. I'll be going the Precision intake as well on my 5.7 and would love a matching set of valve covers, but I'm not about to drop near 1k for valve covers and I'm not really feeling the billet with that hot sheet metal intake. Care looks great! Any additional progress over the holidays? ~Will
DRJDVM's '69
01-10-2011, 10:32 AM
Hey Will
The valve covers Tim has are all milled aluminum too...they arent sheetmetal fabbed. They had a plan to start to make them for production but it never really panned out. Unfortunatley his is the only full set he has...so that ship has sailed
As for valve covers.....my plan right now is to go with the Billet Technology ones...
http://www.custombilletstore.com/Billet_Valve_Covers_p/100456.htm
I'm not too keen on dropping $1k on valve covers either but there just arent many alternatives. I plan on remote mounting my coils and all the other companies have the coil mounts on the covers....Indy cylinder heads have some that are for remote mount coils set ups, and are a bit cheaper, but arent as nice. Billet Tech can make them without the coil mounts, so right now at least, its my best choice.
Jeff Davis at Precision looked into doing the valve covers but the bottomline is that it just isnt financially feasible. The cost to design and then make them just isnt supported by the market...the market is just too small to make it a good business decision for him.
As for progress on the car....... my intake should be done in the next 2 weeks, so I'll post when thet comes. Jeff is still working on it and the remote coil mounts arent back from the waterjet yet.
Made a radiator/upper valence panel to fill in that "void", not done with that yet.....
Started to mock up some exhaust stuff.....got some 3 inch and 2.5 inch pipe to try some stuff out...bought a Dr Gas x pipe...... still trying to decide on a muffler
Been screwing around with getting all the FAST Xfi computers mounted...been struggling with that ALOT...have made 3 different mounts in 3 different locations and havent been happy with any of them so far...just cant find a spot I''m happy with that wont get in the way of something else ( ie loses the glovebox completely...makes running the AC ducts near impossible etc etc) I think I have a final location and mount figured out but its been alot of wasted time on messing with that....trying to think 4 steps ahead so I dont have issues down the road.
Had to swap out my Moser rear diff cover for a "smaller" one.... I got the big one with girdle support etc, but when I put the gas tank back in, the fuel fittings hit the diff cover, so that $150 cover had to go...back to a more "stock" style without all the big braces etc, thankfully that solved the clearence issue. This was the first time I tried to put the tank in after swapping the stock diff for the Dana, so I had no idea until this week...kinda freaked me out at first that I was going to have to notch the tank or something but going to the stock style cover is way easier and cheaper.
I think that about covers it right now.... I'll take some pix and post when the intake arrives....thats a big step :)

Well.....finally some updates.... alot has happende over the last 8 months....just havent got around to posting anything....then I got side tracked getting the Camaro back on the road and havent messed with the Cuda in almost 4 months.
So...... took the car over to Rob's house to fab up the exhaust. Since he has a lift in his shop we figured it would be way easier than working up on jackstands...and it was. Even up on a lift, it was a PITA. Big thanks to Rob for taking time away from his family and his own project, to help me out

At first I was really trying not to notch the frame but the car is so low and the motor is raised, it looked terrible to have the exhasut go under the trans crossmember....so out came the cut off wheel :).... I rough cut everything and we tucked it up nice and tight. I'm making a new trans crossmember and dialing in some more clearence this weekend. The stuff in the pix looks terrible right now, but I'll get it all even and dialed in.The entire exhaust is above the frame and SFC's so you cant see it at all from the side....

Jeff Davis at Precision Metalcraft got the intake all made for me a couple of months ago, but havent had the time to post pix up. He let me borrow the original prototype as a test fit and then modified the original design to be alittle shorter and more compact so it all fits under my hood. He also machined my front timing chain cover to remove some un-necessary "bulges" and add some AN fittings. The he had a mounting plate so I can run my coils under the intake and really clean up the valve cover area.
The intake is gorgeous....its really going to make the car stand out from all the other Cuda's with a 6.1 HEMi transplant

And thats where we stand right now. Now that I finally got the front frame swapped out on the Camaro and got that back on the road, I can get back to working on the Cuda....plus the kids are back in school!!!! So that opens some time too.....
This weekend I hope to get the new trans crossmember done and get the rough cut frame notch all dialed in so it looks nice and is more structurally sound.
I was hoping to get the car back to Tim at Bruning Auto Design to have him do some more stuff....but its looking like that might not happen. Tim is working full time a SAR and has lots of other side projects in his "spare" time...just doesnt look like he will have time..... I understand..... Yeah the exhaust was a challenge....especially since neither one of us had built a custom one before....lots of angles to visualize and fine tune the cuts just right to get the angle right and the joint tight. Rob knows a local guy that is awesome at TIG, so now that its all tacked together, I'm gonna pay him to weld the joints all purdy :)
I bought the mufflers straight from Spintech, so I just had them do the muffler exit at 2.5 inches...so the reducer is built in already.

Next on the "to do" list is finishing the new trans crossmember.... I made one before but cut it up when we notched the frame to tuck the exhaust.....then box in and clean up the frame where we notched it out
Then I plan on mounting up my front Wilwood calipers.... They had to make and then re-do the mount to work with my caliper and spindle. They sent me the modified bracket a couple of months ago and I still don't even know if the changes corrected the situation... I sure hope it did
Then I'm grafting in a tail piece to use a Ridetech fuel filler neck.... Then probably cut more trans tunnel to clear the driveshaft... Then maybe the fuel and brake lines

In several of the pix you can also see the valve covers I picked up from Will. Tim Bruning originally made them for his E-ticket Challenger build, but then had some billet machined ones made...sold the originals to Will... then Will changed his plan to a Viper motor, so I bought them from him....
Then I stuck the Precision Metalcraft intake back on and started to mock up the air intake.
The TB is just a tad over 4 inch diameter, so I mocked up a 4 inch intake pipe and a 3.5 inch pipe..... My concern was if the hood was going to clear the bigger pipe....but both do..so I could use either one.... I rough cut them to get them to fit, but will get them dialed in to be centered between the engine pulley and radiator
4 inch pipe....

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/70%20Cuda%20Project%20Part%20II/IMG_6679.jpg
3.5 inch pipe.....
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/70%20Cuda%20Project%20Part%20II/IMG_6677.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/70%20Cuda%20Project%20Part%20II/IMG_6675.jpg
My plan is to route the pipe down, make a 90 and then parallel to the lower rad support, under the front of the frame and up into the passenger side wheelwell.... Obviously the bigger pipe is better for airflow.... but the 3.5 inch is going to be a little easier to get it where I want......
As for proportions and visual impact, the 4 inch looks better...... if I mount the 4 inch and then swap for the 3.5, it looks tiny.....
What do you guys think?

Rob and I built all the exhaust, got it tacked up and then plan was to have a real good "TIG man" do the final weld to make it all nice and pretty....
So once I got the crossmember stuff all dialed in, I took it to a local fab guy and had everything but the front V-band clamps final welded. Even before that, the front pipes to the headers were alittle "sprung" after everything was tacked together.... I had to kinda "squeeze" the pipes together to get the collector V-band clamps matched up...wasnt too crazy about having that tension there... so I orded up some flex couplers just in case...
After the joints were TIG welded, the "sprung" section was worse. I messed with ratchet straps to try and bend them in a little etc, which worked, but still wasnt happy. So I cut the front section off and added the flex couplers and its way better now...there is no tension between exhaust and headers at all.... This will also allow for some engine movement and heat expansion etc etc.......I dialed in the front V-band flange and header flange and took it all back to the TIG man to get that part final welded...should be done next week
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/70%20Cuda%20Project%20Part%20II/IMG_6683.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/70%20Cuda%20Project%20Part%20II/IMG_6682.jpg
Even before that, I had to cut some sections out of the floor to clear exhaust and v-band clamps and a tiny notch in the frame to get alittle more clearence from header to frame. So I closed up all that stuff....

Yes I did.... But the check is post dated and Cris agreed that he wouldn't deposit it until 2025.... So we are all good to go :)
But in all seriousness..... Monet and I made the 6 hour haul down Monday.... Severe weather warning over the I5 grapevine overpass.... Great.... Luckily it only snowed alittle and we made it fine. It was alittle nerve racking towing in the snow and wondering if it was going to get worse once we got into it. It all worked out fine.... Now we just have to get back :)
Cris and I went over the car and my list...... Now his wheels are turning and I'm sure other ideas will start popping up. My goal is to work within my budget for this stage of the car and get as much stuff done there as my budget allows. Cris knows my checkbook has limits, so the goal is to get the most "bang for the buck"

Ok before I start a Part III build thread, I figured I would do some updates of stuff I got done before I dropped it off at JCG.
First I adapted a RideTech/Coachworks camaro fuel filler neck to work with my tailpan. I used the tailpan section from a '68 Camaro and cut out the recessed section of the donor piece and cut out a matching section on my Cuda tailpan...then it was dialed in and fully welded.
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/70%20Cuda%20Project%20Part%20II/IMG_7027.jpg

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/70%20Cuda%20Project%20Part%20II/IMG_7032.jpg
I removed all the original mounts for the stock license plate and am currently building an aluminum license plate holder that will be held on with magnets :) That way I can pop it on and off easily and have the tailpan look totally clean when I want to....and fill the car with gas.....
DRJDVM's '69

The Camaro piece works out pretty well, but it does have the slight offset point to the passenger side....it doesnt completely line up with the filler hole on the tank.....cutting the filler neck and aligning it with the tank inlet is on the "JCG to do list" :)

Next on the agenda was to cut out a small section of the floor to allow me to drop the seats down about 1.5 inches. The Cuda floor has a "lump" near the door, the was an issue with all the seats I tried. They all just sat too high..... I'm 6'3" and my head was only about 2 inches from the roof....with no carpet or headliner....and the view out the windshield just didnt feel right....it was too high..... When Monet sat in the car one time when I was moving it around and she randomly said "are these the seats you are using? The sit really hight"...I knew it wasnt just me.....shes about 5'6" and I had never mentioned my concern......So out came the cut off wheel and welder :)
I removed the "bump" and was able to drop the seats down about 1.5 inches....much better... It just feel better sitting in the car...

Then it was time for the air intake tube....decided to go with the 4 inch and keep in clean and simple....down straight from the TB, parallel to the radiator base and under the frame and into the wheelwell. I mocked it all up and Rob tacked it together for me. I'll get a good TIG man to final weld it all up

You can just barely see the tube at the corner of the front valance....I'm going to black coat the tube going into the wheelwell, so you will never see it...the car is really low too, so it should disapper pretty good.
DRJDVM's '69
12-13-2011, 08:21 PM
Then I mocked up the rear brakes... had to drill out the hat since the Moser studs have a small collar at the bottom that wouldnt allow the hat to sit flush with the axle flange.

Mark at BentFab made me some frame passthrough for my fuel and brake lines... the car is really low and I didnt want to run my lines under the frame, so I used the original holes for the torsion bars and made some small block off plates.
Mounted up my fuel filter too..

On a side note.....before trailering the car down to Cris I added some LED lights to my car trailer. It only had the one tiny light right inside the door and it didnt offer much light. So I bought some LED lights off ebay for $25 each for string of 600 LED in 15 feet and wired them up Sunday....pretty easy too.
Low energy needs, no heat and easy to install.... one tiny power wire, one ground and 3M adhesive strips on the back....just roll them out and stick them on
Huge difference....you can actualy see in the trailer at night.... I highly recommend it. I may even add some more down low to be able to see under the car even better too.

Finally time for some updates!!!
Cris has been super busy at JCG, so I've been patiently waiting my turn :)
First up was to complete the radiator close out panel to clean up the front upper valance-radiator area... the idea was to carry on the theme of the inner fenderwells that Tim built....
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/70%20Cuda%20Project%20Part%20II/IMG_2032.jpg
I'm planning on running a 5 point belt, but dont want a full cage or a bunch of bars in the interior, so after checking out a bunch of 1st gen builds that have done it, Cris made a support plate to weld to the body that will allow me to run a bar behind the front seat.... removeable and no bars to smash your head on :)

Then the bigger jobs started..... Tim did such an awesome job with the rear valance and bumper that I couldnt leave the front bumper dead stock. The idea was to tuck it in nice and tight and complement the rear bumper....turned out awesome. I'm not 100% sure yet, but my plan is to plate the bumper...maybe a brushed look....so the metal finnish had to be dead on....tons of work

Car is back....made a quick hot lap...drove down 6.5 hours...went over the car, bull****ted, got some details finnished up and drove 6.5 hours back :)
Cris took my "to do list" as far as my budget would allow....wish my budget was bigger but it isnt...the work turned out great....just wish I had more $$ allotted to get more done
There were also a few issues I need to correct, that prevented Cris from doing some things on my "to do list". Not his fault....
The big one was the finalizing the pinion angle. I set my engine down at 3 degrees (based on all the info and recommendations out there) and did my exhaust, notched the frame, built a trans crossmenber etc etc. I was going to have Cris finalize the rear end pinion and weld on the brackets etc. Well my rear diff apparently is a decent amount higher than my trans output, so with the engine down 3 degress the working angle is too steep...so I either need to drop my rear diff, or up my engine angle to around 1.5 degress down......so it looks like I'll need to re-do the frame notch, trans tunnel, crossmember etc etc.....which is fine.....but I cant afford to pay someone to do all of that...and I can do it myself...so finalizing the pinion had to wait for now.
Still got a ton to do...... I'll post some pix soon....

Hi Ned, I set my driveline angle 1 deg down and set my pinion angle at 1 nose up. This gives me a level drive shaft and keeps the exhast from pointing towards the ground. http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=30781

Any updates on this?

04-09-2013, 12:24 PM
Wow its been a long time since I did any updates..... The car is plugging away as I get time.
First on order was to get the rear suspension all figured out....When Tim altered the rear Air Ride stuff to get the car to sit lower it made it look bad ass, but completely destroyed all the geometry...... the UCA and LCA were like 10 degrees going up to the rear at ride height, and the pinion gain was ridiculous. I had planned on changing the rear end/LCA bracket anyway since I hate the big bulky u-bolt set-up, so this was the time....
This is how the LCA was sitting at ride height...not going to work....
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/70%20Cuda%20Project%20Part%20II/IMG_7577.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/70%20Cuda%20Project%20Part%20II/IMG_7579.jpg
So the best way I could figure was to take the front mount and put it on top of the crossbar....which in order to do I had to cut out some of the floor...
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/70%20Cuda%20Project%20Part%20II/IMG_7588.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/70%20Cuda%20Project%20Part%20II/IMG_7585.jpg
Which got me a lot closer to where I needed to be..... I then made new axle brackets to raise the mount point on the axle tube, so I had 1-2 degrees down in the front..... I didn't take pix of that....

I had Paul Horton at www.welderseries.com make me some new LCA brackets that no only got rid of the u-bolts, but allowed me to drop the axle LCA mount point so that it was about 1 degree down in the back ( the pix is with the car at full extended height, so that's not the angle at ride height...)....plus add some holes for adjustments. I had Leonard over at Dominator Street Rods weld on the brackets for me

All this was after messing with the pinion/working angles for weeks and weeks. Once I got that where I wanted, I had the axle brackets welded on for good. Then I ordered up a driveshaft from www.driveshaftshop.com. I had them build one with the front CV joint...that way I have more flexibility with the front working angle...I just need to work with the rear working angle

Now that the rear suspension was finalized I could finally build the trans tunnel. I mocked together a temporary driveshaft while I was messing with the pinion...that way I could also see how much height I needed to add with the car fully dumped etc.

The whole trans tunnel was made by hand....I don't have a slip roller etc, so it was bent over my MIG gas tank, my knee and anything else I could find....not dead on symmetrical, but it will do..

While at JCG Cris cut and rotated the Ride Tech gas filler, so then I just had to modify the trunk lock bracket and the hole in the trunk floor to get it all dialed in and fit so I can take it in/out. I tightened up the gasket gap alittle more after this pix...it air tight now
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/70%20Cuda%20Project%20Part%20II/IMG_0274_zps144bc700.jpg
I also wanted to have some firewall to frame support but didn't want some big bulky bars in the engine bay, so I had Cris make some that run in the fenderwells...in the e body there is a ton of space in there......the ones he mocked up for me to finnish didn't really work so I made some new ones from scratch. They just barely clear with the car fully dumped :) I also made some bracket and gussets to the fenderwell and firewall. They also give me some nice spots to attach my AC lines, wires, air intake bracket etc etc

Fuel lines and mount for the regulator was next. I wanted to run the reg in back and have a short return line. There is not a ton of room back there, so I elected to mount it to the tank itself. I used the Pegasus Racing PTFE lines and fittings....damn that stuff is expensive !!
I am alittle concerned about how close the tank is to the diff.....I had to take the big Moser cover off and use a standard stamped cover. Everything clears but if I ever get rear ended, the diff is going to hit the tank pretty quick. The pix make it look closer than it ..there's a good 1.5 inch between the closest piece and the diff throughout the range of motion. I made a heat shield between the reg and exhaust too.

I had to make some room for the diff pumpkin in the trunk so I made it high enough I could run some lines etc up in the pocket. It worked out perfect to mount up my Finch vent system in the trunk and run my diff vent and fuel tank vent up there. Plenty of clearance even with the car dumped.

I wasn't 100% satisfied with the exhaust Rob and I built....the tailpipe angle to the lower valance was not quite right and the tips didn't line up square..so I re-did the tailpipes to get the angle right and get allitle more clearance to the air bags..and added another v-band clamp to make the pieces smaller
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/70%20Cuda%20Project%20Part%20II/IMG_0276_zpsb797c577.jpg
After seeing some of the issue with the frame cracking when the G-link etc was welded to the frame instead of bolted in, I got freaked out since I fully welded in my AirBar. So I made some plates to mount to the outside of the frame, and drilled 2 holes through the plate and the bracket on the inside of the frame. I'm going to run 2 through frame bolts to help spread the load on the frame and act as a safety factor just in case the frame cracks or tears.. probably paranoid, but I can sleep better knowing its beefed up alittle more

The car has been in bare metal for quite awhile now.... when I had it blasted I did epoxy it but with all the metal work 80% of the original epoxy is gone. So now that I'm finally winding down on the big metal work, I need to get it back in epoxy. So I prepped and shot the doors, front fenders and trunk lid.
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/70%20Cuda%20Project%20Part%20II/IMG_0181_zpse9102f04.jpg
So that's where it stands right now for the most part.
Right now I put the car back on the rotisserie and am going over all the welds and doing final grinding/dressing etc. I'm going to have Dominator weld on my brackets for the rear UCA front mounts (any high stress areas, I'm having the pros weld on...don't trust my own enough)....then I'm going to take it back to the blaster and have them "touch it up" by blasting all the underside, floor and any spots really difficult to get to (seams, welds etc) and then get it back into epoxy.
Then mock it all up again, and start my hard lines for brakes, fuel, brakes etc

hey Marty
The rear UCA ?...no its the same length....maybe a turn or two different. I tried to run it in the middle of its threads to give me as much adjustment longer/shorter as possible. Other than that, its the same length as it comes form Ride Tech

yes I did have Tim shorten those front UCA a tad and the camber improved a lot. I'm still kinda worried about alignment adjustment with the way the front is set up now....we shall see...
On the Airbar set up on my Camaro we bolted and did a couple stitch welds.

Not sure that is going to acomplish what you want. I may be wrong here, but you have the exhaust mount on the wrong side of the expansion joint.
if you want the tip to always stay in the same location, you want to hard mount the tip centered in the valance and have the expansion joint before it, so that the tip will always stay in place as the exhaust moves around.

Yeah Bob I know the expansion part of the joint really isn't going to come into play with the current mount......it just gives a little more ability to adjust the tip and then clamp it down.... Not that worried about expansion that far back anyway... I have a bigger one mounted further up stream....

To be clear, the rear "bolt-in" suspension frame-side link mounts, tacked on axle brackets, UCA and LCA links from the kit were already (temporarily) installed onto the original Mopar axle when the car arrived at Tim's shop.
The ONLY modification Tim made on the rear suspension was to the upper air bag mounts to allow the car to sit lower when aired out. You reached the inherent limitations of the bolt-in kit when you decided that you wanted a lower ride height.
Which got me a lot closer to where I needed to be..... I then made new axle brackets to raise the mount point on the axle tube, so I had 1-2 degrees down in the front..... I didn't take pix of that....

Relax TJ.... I'm not implying Tim screwed something up. I'm really happy with the decision to lower it more. My point was that its a perfect example of change one "small thing" and it cascades into the need to change a bunch of other things too.... That's the price we pay for screwing with stuff :)
I'm completely happy with the choice Tim and I made to lower it more.... I would do it again. The only thing different is I wouldn't have started with a bolt on and then changed 80% of it :).... I would have custom built it from the start. Easy to look back now , but at the time I bought the bolt in I had no idea I was going to scrap 80% of it
I'd have Tim work on my car again anytime.....

Ned, whats your plans with the lower back seat.Looks like you had to split it in half. I am in the process of the same mod with the tunnel on mine.
DRJDVM's '69

John...yes I had to split the lower portion of the rear seat to clear the new tunnel. Right now at least, I made some bars to go up over the new tunnel and connect the two sides. If I stick with this plan the tunnel will get covered by the seat but there wont be any/much padding on the "hump". I may just split it and make two buckets instead...not sure yet.

Bought a Miller Diversion TIG welder and started to play with aluminum fabrication.
Got rid of the plastic cowl ventral grill and made some new ones out of aluminum..lots of trial a error getting the bends just right to fit the contours of the cowl....kind of a PITA. The mounted them with rivnuts... added a few more fastners to make it look more symmetrical
Hand built with flat stock, cut off wheel, grinder and a TIG.....not bad for a first timer....not perfect, but I'm pretty happy with the way they turned out

TONS of small stuff.... hidden wiper motor inside cowl...ISIS mounts and figuring where to mount all the EFI stuff, AC stuff, mock up running all the AC lines, PS lines, hydroboost lines. moved the side mirrors forward about 7 inches, built a custom mount for interior rear view mirror. rear seatbelt mounts so I can run a 4 point belt in back etc etc etc..... lots of stuff, but pix aren't worth showing..
When I felt like I had done all of my big metal stuff and no obvious cutting/welding/drilling... I prepped and Upol Raptor lined the underside of the car. Nice stuff...sprayed easy, looks great....

That's all the big stuff that is worth sharing with pix..
Its basically ready for paint....FINALLY.... if I did it right, once its painted, it will just fall back together quick...yeah right :)
Not 100% sure on color....been talking to Carter about doing some new paint layouts, but he's super busy with his new job. Leaning towards a dark maroon with two stripes on the fenders....maybe a blacked out hood and rear tail pan...not sure yet.
I've been building the car WAY too long.. I need to get it done !!!
Just trying to nail down the painter, and when I can bring it in....

Damn Ned! I thought maybe one of them cats you're always playing around with gave you a little lick and you ran off with it or something!
Since your last post I got married - raised the kids and they graduate college next semester....
It looks really really good... the stance is spot on... your fab work has come way up the ladder and your tubing work is stellar!! Mark might have to hire you if he gets too busy!
I hope you've changed that green tape out a few times since we last had breakfast?!?!? If not -- Oh... you may be peeling little tiny pieces off there for a very long time. Stop chewing your finger nails 'cause you're going to need them long and sharp.
Personally I think the car calls for a really subtle color.... like Panther Pink.... but Maroon will work nicely too.... actually if it was my car I'd paint it kind of a maroon -- but it would be more Dark Black Cherry.... with a dark brandy colored interior.

I'm going to keep space in the trunk open for my walker.... By the time I get this car done, I'll be at the retirement home :)
I'm happy with the fuel and brake lines...hopefully they don't leak like hell :)... I pressure tested and the flares seem to seal, but we shall see
Not looking forward to peeling that tape off the wheels
I'm so all over the place on color....it looks bad ass in epoxy :)

You're doing great work, Ned. I think a dark color like maroon would suit this car just fine. A dark cherry red like cherry wood furniture would be great as well. Make it a metallic with lots of clear to give it depth is what I would do. Keep up the great work, and good luck moving forward.

Great to see an update Ned. I think it looks great. Remember to pick a colour that appeals to most if you ever plan to sell it down the road. IMO you can't go wrong with a red, black or silver or one of the original mopar colors like green, purple etc.

Time for an update..... the car is moving along... I just never get around to posting pix etc...
So.... after my original paint plan fell through, I searched long and hard in CA for someone to paint my car....someone I could trust...and someone I can afford. In CA the average shop rate is hovering around $75/hr, so add materials and there was basically no way I was going to get above average work for under $30k
So after talking to a lot of shops, I decided to haul my car all the way to Mortensens Customs in Coer d'Alene ID....yes Idaho.... the same shop that painted Bob Braga's car...... It made me real nervous to have the car that far away from home, but even with the hassle of travel and the extra cost to get the car back and forth, the "bang for the buck" factor just made it the right choice....so off we went on a road trip...
Ok...so the project has taken alittle longer than expected....so?...my kid has grown just a tad over that period...so?

Ned the car looks great and it has to feel really good to be this close to color.

I have always been partial to dark green metallic. Mine is WA9529... but I also like the new Limerock Green, which is an uncommon new color on the C7. I would describe mine as "Forest Green" where I would call the Limerock more a "Emerald Green".
But that is me, I like dark greens...

Back from the dead......
yes. yes.. its taken me this long to build my car..... EVERYTHING took WAY longer than I had ever planned..... active kids and work taking up time... spreading out my budget etc etc....
So.... my question..... where and how do I post pictures now? Havent done this in so long.... used to host on Shutterfly and then link here... is that still a thing?
Most of my pictures are on my phone, but I dont do much on this site via my phone... still visit mostly on my computer.... I'm now old and blind on the small screens...
So I want to post update pix.... help me out
