Its been a long time dream to mod a 1st gen Camaro. Ive built many cars and bikes but it was never planed it just happened. This project was bought with it in my head that modding was comin. You guys will have to bare with me on this project. Its going to be a long project but worth it in the end. I hope to sell my Boat to fund whats coming. If Ive added it up right Im looking at about 25k without the cost of the car. Thats doing all the work myself including paint. Heres some pics of what Im workin with.
Heres the car I bought two weeks ago.

Ive started to tear it down. I know a lot of you are thinking. That guy is nuts! That car has fresh paint on it. Well it just wasnt good enough for me. Ive done many paint jobs and this one just doesnt stack up. The nice part is its been blasted. Ive put the order in for some steel for the rotisserie. I also ordered some 16 gauge for the firewall work. Next will be the tubs. Ill update as I go.

What are your plans for it?

Looks like a solid car, will you be stripping it or scuff and shoot?

Vegas69

Looks solid....the over spray all over everything is the first sign of a half assed job. The second is waves in the paint in a photo. You can make a bucket full of **** look good in a photo. Looks like a great start though man:thumbsup:

Yes sir, thats why I tore it a part. Waves like the ocean! I went to pick the car up and the last owner said, put it together and your good to go,lol. Theres very little filler on the panels. Looks like someone just shot it.

The car was blasted though, its pretty clean. The underside has nothing on it, its just metal. Ill be building a rotisserie soon. The underside will be color matched. Plans so far include,
LS2, T56
Custom interior
Shave a LOT of body lines, handels ect.
Save firewall
Strip the paint and start over
New front subframe, unsure of brand at this point
New 12 bolt rear end.
Custom air ride
20in 19in wheels unsure of brand
DSE tubs
14in brakes unsure of brand
HOK Nova orange paint

Ill get started strippin soon:)

Did a little more work this afternoon. I shaved the drip rails. I also did a little sanding on the car. Looks like the car was really stripped last go round. Only one paint job on her. The top of the car is super flat! Given what Ive seen sanding. Ill block the top and strip the rest of the car.

You say you shaved the drip rails? Do you have other pics showing this as it looks to me that the are still on the car, perhaps just the angle of the pics?

For a little more work, and not much really! I would deffinatly strip the roof/whole car! There's nothing like starting fresh, and the roof is right in your face when the cars on the ground!

Looks like a good car to start with. You might be one of the lucky ones that starts with a rust free car.

I'm interested to see more of what's under the paint.

is there welding to be done when shaving the drip rails or do you just cut them off and call it good?

camaro2nv
11-02-2008, 10:20 AM
Ill try and get better pics. Theres a little bump that runs in back of the drip rail. I left it there. I think its a nice touch. Theres a couple spots that need to be welded shut.
I know at least one quarter has been replaced but yeah its going to be nice to see what under that paint. So far so good. Its nice to see evercoat filler. I like to see that because that usually shows that a decent shop did the work.

camaro2nv
11-02-2008, 06:20 PM
Started doing some sanding today. As I got into the passenger side quarter I found the cut for the new quarter. Wouldnt have been my choice but I guess it will be ok. I found a 1/2 of bondo over the welded section. I dont know why this much filler was used. The panel isnt that off, oh well its gone now.
I then got started on the template for the firewall. I think this will do just fine!

It feels good to have a new LS2 with aluminum heads sitting in the garage doesn't it? Looking good the motor you just know it';s going to make your light weight car really scream.

I don't see the fender bolt holes on your firewall. Although, it doesn't appear to be tack welded. I already seen one guy that forgot to drill those holes and welded it. There is some photos of my firewall on this link. http://www.kodakgallery.com/67rscamaro/main/67_camaro_rs

I cut the lip off the wheel wells today. I left 1/4 inch of lip. Im going to weld in a piece of round bar to finish it up.
I placed the rear wheels under the car so I could get a measurement for my rear end. Its 54 1/2 to the center of each pad. Tomorrow I call and order my Morrison rear end! Woo hoo

Rob -- You just can't have too much truck!!

My truck problem is that it doesn't get driven 'enough'... Most of it's milage is hiway hauling Calfornia and Az and back to the Pacific NorthWET.

Tell you what though -- It has the full Gale Banks 6 gun BIG HOSS bundle -- GPS -- Killer stereo - 500 watt CB -- and Radar detector -- and it can HAUL...

Hey!! Money's no good if you don't spend it... LOL

I mean - that's why you get up and go to work - to earn money - you earn money so that you have some to spend! So you're just doing what you're supposed to do! Right?

My wife only follows this logic if she's at Nordstrom. It doesn't apply to car parts.

Got a call today from Fedex. Looks like the Magnum Trans will be here Monday:yes: Now I can get that LS2 off the create stand and get them paired up.
After getting the rear clip tacked in I put the DSE tubs in there locations. I didnt care for the way they hide the Morrison frame rail. I want them to butt up to the rail and not overlap it. Im also running 345mm rear tires. I need all the room I can get. So I pulled out the poster board and started cutting it up. Heres what I came out with. This part has been fun for me because Ive never done fab work like this. Its givin me some time behind the welder. Its not welded in yet, I wanted some feedback first. Thoughts??

Don't freak out. It will be the best kind of change you could ever imagine. (except the first few months of ZERO sleep). But after that it is awesome, even the sleepless nights ( i hope you don't have that many) are really worth it.

Those extras do add up quick huh? It's all those little things that are required, just can't get away from that. It's coming together nice though. Well back in the garage! The baby has been napping so I sneak away to do some work.
Im still waiting for all my other parts to roll in. Willwood sent me the rears but Im still waiting on the fronts. These are the W4A, from what Frank told me these are the first to go on a rear or a car. They are BIG! The rotors are 14in and calipers are 11in long. I picked black because I want them to match the car color. So they will be painted to match. The fronts are W6A with a 14.25 rotor. Ill post them once I get em.

Hey -- in the beginning of this post - your car is shown with some "tubs" on the ground in one of the pics ... then later on you show building your own... What happened to cause that?

Nice.....do yourself a favor and make sure you don't have a brake pad knock back issue on the rear end. You will need a dial indicator and must remove the brake pads. I don't know if the issue has been resolved with the axle retainer that wilwood provides yet or not? Now is the time to deal with it if there is a problem.

I ended up going with the Morrison rear clip. With the new rails I wanted something that would butt up to the rails, cleaner look. I cant get that with the DSE tubs. Im also running a 345 rear tire. I need all the room I can get! The goal is to weld the new tubbs to the rails and grind smooth. Then finish them out and paint the underside the body color.

Are they specifically for a wilwood setup? I tweaked one of my wilwood retainers a hair. I ended up with a set of currie retainers that go all the way around the bearing. On mine you could see the bearing move away from the retaining clip with your bare eyes! I had over .020 on both sides. I was able to get it down to .005 and .006 with the currie plates. Do yourself a favor an measure it now while it's mocked up. Wilwood was working on a new design when I talked to them 2 months ago. The new design was shimmable.

This was posted in my intercooler thread as I was talking about anodizing mine.

Hope everything is alright for the most part! Been following this build for sometime. Kick ass project! Whoever buys this is car will have it easy. Most of the hard work and research have already been done.

Sorry guys. I think it will be hard to find a buyer. If I dont sell it I might hire a buddy to help me finish it. The goal was to build this car myself all the way down to the paint. But looks like my health is getting in the way. Its a real bummer. Ive been fighting my injury for so long and it seems to be winning.

I hope all is well. I just now read through every page of this build. Awesome build and great choice of parts. I like the stance and the uniqueness of your wheels. and hope you can finish this car.
