View Full Version : Mike Reckley's 67 Camaro Project

Reckley

Well I’ve been hanging around Lateral-g for a few years now and have met a lot of great people. Until now I haven’t made much progress on my project so, never posted any pics.

Here it is, my 67 Camaro project. I’m building the car in my garage and plan to do as much myself as possible. To help me along I’ve recruited my Dad who has an extensive knowledge of engine building, machining and overall mechanical and automotive engineering experience. During this project, I’ve learned more about building cars than I would have thought possible. I think my Dad has actually learned a few things as well.

Here are the planned specs for the car

Engine
Stock LS2 with aftermarket camshaft and headers

Drive Train
T56 6-speed
Ford 9 inch housing 3.73 trutac, moser 33 spline axles & strange 12 bolt aluminum carrier.

Suspension / Chassis

Front suspension

DSE upper control (stock mounting position)
Coilover shocks with custom upper mount.
ATS tall spindles
DSE lower control arms

Rear Suspension

DSE Quadralink
DSE minitub

Wheels

Front – 18x8.5 Forgeline ZX3 with 255/35ZR18 Yokohama advans
Rear - 18x11.5 Forgeline ZX3 with 315/30ZR18 Yokohama advans

I’ll begin with what I started with and post pics as the project progresses.

The C pillars were actually rusted through under the drip rails!! I guess you never really know what's under the roof and quarters. One of the previous owners figured he would braze over the rust.

I used Lizard Skin. I hope it reduces noise, that was my intention. It seems to have taken the ringing effect out of the panels.

Next it I decided to pull up the dynamat and get the floors blasted. It's a good I did, I found some more rust.

Thank you.

This is actually my first build.. I've just been taking my time and learning as I go. My dad has been a big help. He has a lot of automotive and metal/machine work experience. However, he's never taken a car this far. So, it's been a learning experience for both of us.

Mike is one of the nicest guys you would ever hope to meet..and we have a great friendship because of this site, and these cars (we live close too, that helps!)....His car is an inspiration to "do-it-yourselfers", he bought a welder and went to work with really no prior experience. Loads of work and man hours, many "lessons learned", a patient and forgiving wife and a skillful mentor in his father have transformed this car into something to be proud of...I can't wait to see it finished... Thanks much,

We made the mounts. We decided to go with this set up so we could adjust the ride height without taking the shock out.

Making the mounts wasn't too hard but, positioning the shock so the jounce rubbers were timed properly took some head scratching.

The fronts are 18x8.5 with 255 wide tires.

I'll have to measure the rear for you, I can't remember what it ended up being. The rear wheels are 18x11 with 5.5 back spacing.

A few more pics.

Sweat car! I love the way it is turning out. Did you have to modify the bracket on the booster to get it to sit right? I have to same setup, but it sits at to much of an angle and won't clear the hood.

I did cut the bracket and weld it to get the proper angle and clear the engine bay bar. I believe DSE now sells a bracket so you don't have to do what I did.

I know it's been a really long time since I've posted but I wanted to get back to it. I still have my car and thought I would share what's been going on since I finished it. Over the past 2 years I've been fortunate to be able to attend several track and autocross events such as the Motor State Challenge, The Day at the Strip, Ohio Muscle Car Challenge and some fun track days at Gingerman Raceway.

This year I'm brining the car to SEMA! This has always been a dream of mine.
