Well i am back and building a new car no its not a 57 chevy as the title might lead you to belive but a 69 mustang fast back..plans call for a 460 bb with a C6 tranny, mini tubbed with 315`s under the rear, with a triangulated late model rear end, disc brakes all round , complete front end removed and a pro touring mustang type front end installed sitting low and mean....I post pics as soon as its in my garage just finishing up a 69 tubbed nova with a 650hp on motor small block here is a pic of the nova

This weekends progress consisted of removing the rear and leaf springs ,removing the old front end frame rails and all ,started to clean up the body ill be repairing the drivers quater and replacing the passengers. I thought i could get away without mini tubbing the rear but 315`s are big tires so a mild mini tub will have to be done .....here are some pics.

Hey looks killer with 315`s on the front
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t91/aussiebj/Toms%20mustang/69stangloosesfrontend.jpg
Set at 7 inches to the ground this will probably be the ride height...

hung the front fenders on to see if the 315`s would clear...

10-19-2008, 07:38 PM
Reminds me of a high school project me and a friend did in the late seventies.
We almost started with less than your car but we didn't have new front end parts like today. Would like do redo a 64 1/2 coupe when My cobra is done.

What are you doing for rear would be a good time to swap in an IRS unit from a late model cobra or t-bird, hell you're half way there.

Yea i narrow the rears myself i have a fixture i always buy new axles these were just cut and welded together so i can roll it around.....and thats no 351 its a 460 BB that will probably be punched out to 528ci or something like that. thanks for the comments...

rjardy
11-09-2008, 04:28 PM
Looks like the top two bars are triangulated. No need for a pan hard if so.

aussiebj

Yes this is the same type of setup that late model mustangs use.. no need for a panard bar...

Its fine for a drag car try carving corners in a newer mustang you'll see why most use a 3 link.

This set up is the same i used on my road racing 95 mustang GT, only with stiffer spring rates it handled the corners great....

as for the interior the dash will stay old school but will have brushed aluminium like the new gen mustang ,all black interior with 4 buckets all with power and heat...some updated a/c unit and a custom roll cage.

Barry,

Good work and I love the common man garage build. This is proof that it can be done. You are doing a very good job and keep it up!!! I hope the eye is ok. All it takes is one time " been there done that" to experience that and from there on you'll always wear good eye protection.

I really like the 69 Fastback,:hail: it'll make a killer PT car.
Keep us posted on the build and be safe!!!

aussiebj

The rocker panels came from Mustangs Unlimited and if i had to do it again i would just buy the complete rocker replacement section instead of putting it together in three pieces...and they fit good....

Barry - here is a link to a website where I documented the tube chassis build. It is a free geocities site so after you look at a few pages it wants to shut down, so you may have to go to it a few times with a break in between.

It is a full tube chassis car, stock section of car as the center chunk, 353 cube de-stroked 400 Chevy 525HP/438ft-lbs on the engine dyno, and I just installed a sequential shift full race 4spd transaxle. My friend is on his way to weld in some brackets for me as I type. 2587lbs with the dry sump, two monster oil coolers, etc etc so she is heavy for a 914 but light for a typical V8 race car.

thanks! here is a link to my YouTube channel. One of my vids was pulled yesterday actually due to copyright issues (I was using snippets of music and apparently somebody figured out I was using a 10 second segment of their song  and shut it down). I will try to get that one back up since it shows me rolling hard on a few cars to give you an idea of relative acceleration v. other cars.

In the meantime my channel has a couple vids still up of the car on the track and one drag racing which is futile in a road race car but makes for a fun time with friends.

yeah, that site is junk. I need to just get in gear and get my own .com and make a site from scratch that works all the time.

wow, so surprised to see so many correct responses :unibrow: typically everyone on this board seems to think the bigger the wheels and the more rubberband the tires the better, so make the vote x4

The muscle cars look the best with 17s or 18s, but any larger just looks stupid.

10-19-09 Ok finally get a chance for an update ..been working on the small details not really worth pics ..went back with the 17`s as i think it has a much tougher look and will be more drivable...hung the front sheetmetal even has a hood on it now ..just temp while gapping fenders and setting in the radiator support....started working on the side scoops i do not like the overlap look so i am flush mounting them ill show pics...also removed the 8.8 rear and ordered up a new 9 inch assembly with 31 spline axles 3.50 new posi and center section as well as willwood disc brakes, should be here in a week or so then it will be a roller again and i will roll it outside and take some pics. 12-16-09 Ok time for an update...The company i bought the rear brakes from dropped the ball and sent the wrong ones so after a 3 week wait they showed up ..i built up the rear end and installed it under the car ..had to refabricate the new upper and lower mounts as well as relocate the coil overs and mounting set up.. and reset the rear...once the rear was back where I wanted it I ordered a custom made drive shaft (only 44" long)....as for the interior I had to remove all the sheetmetal that I had already fabricated for the stock looking interior, as i changed the direction the interior I was going..it will now be all black leather and power, lets just say im bringing some new touches into the old..I will post pics when its all installed....

Body work is comming along ..the body shop has over 200hrs in it as of now, and as you know the devil is in the details.... I also replaced the whole front clip with new metal as well....it would have all been assembled this week only the trucking company crushed the hood so i they sent it back and we r waiting on a new hood to arrive, but its looking great ....The engine is done and waiting its engine shop dyno time, which should be this week depending on the shops schedule. Then as soon as the engine bay is painted i will install the engine and tranny while its at the body shop...interior is in work..its all comming together as planned

ok here is a short vid of the dyno pull ...made 502 ft lbs of torque at 3500 and only 380 hp untill it blew all the oil out the rear main seal and front l/h side of the pan gasket the hp curve was flat and increasing till this happened...should make in excess of 560hp when fixed ..it was producing 92 psi of oil pressure..its a new ford racing pump guess ill put a softer spring in the pump if i can..also you can here it breaking up... well thats the brand new MSD dizzy we found a almost broken wire inside... quality product control...but aleast it runs...

7-26-10..ok the final numbers on the engine and these are peak numbers, they were 496 hp and 502 ftlbs..we ran it up to 5500rpm ..hp dropped off to 480 and so did the torque... max torque came in at 4800rpm and max hp at 5100rpm..so all in all this will be a great street motor..i think it might even do a burn out..LOL..

My Dad had a similar experience trying to get the headliner done in the '60 Beetle. The guy kept putting it off and I even remember stopping by one day and peering in the window of his shop and seeing the car collecting dust in the back corner. He did awesome work but lost Dad a few months of the driving season (we live in southern Maine).

Well i go to start the car today after running the wires ..push button start and all ..and she cranks over but nothing else.. so i spend 2 hours trouble shooting the wires and swapping in three different coils..so i check the wires at my nice and expensive MSD Pro Billet Dizzy, oh and wouldn`t you know it that on a quality piece like an MSD the ground wire is broken in the connector.. no problem ill hard wire it ..ok still no spark ,so i take the cap off and the base plate to get to the inner electric reluctor (i think thats what its called) ..and there is no power in the wires ..so i removed the dizzy and i will disassemble it tomorrow to see what is wrong with the internal wiring..you know you try and buy quality pieces and it still dont work out..oh and i bought it 2 years ago so I guess theres no warranty left.. I was so looking forward to firing this baby up with open headders today.
Anyone else had a problem with an MSD dizzy???????
