i was owndering if anyone could lead me toward a decent plasma cutter for under $500 used new doesn't matter. i know i might be asking alot here but it will not be used to cut 1 inch steel just to do body work and cut maybe 1/2 metal. i have looked at ebay but not amps etc i would need for personal garage use. i figure will speed my work along with all metal work i need to do.

hypertherm or thermal dynamics, td created the technology way back and the founders split and the other formed hypertherm.
look for a hypertherm 380 or 600 which will cut to 3/8 and 5/8 or a thermal dynamics 38 to 51 cutmaster, used is fine all consumables are easy to come by.

if you plan to cut 1/4 inch i wouldnt go below 40 amps.... preforably 50... it just takes too long and requires too much cleanup with the small 35 amp cutters... if all you do is replace fenders, you will be fine with a small one.... and be sure it has HF ignition

I have a 110v Hypertherm unit with a self contained compressor. It cuts sheetmetal fine. Anything much thicker and it takes a little bit of time. I've actually had the overload protection shut it off a couple of times while cutting out brackets (1/8" thick) and what-not. If the metal isn't 100% clean, it doesn't do very well either.

When I get my situation straight I'm going to upgrade to a 220v unit and use my Ingersol Rand compressor to supply the air.

Have had my hypertherm for 6 years, never let me down.
I use it mostly on my cnc plasma table, lots of hours on it
