Well I've been lurking this site for a while now, and figured I would share my project, as long as it's cool with you guys. I know it's not a pro-touring car, but the plans for this thing is a mean street machine, that can handle well and put it's fair share of power down on the pavement.

April 2007 was the last time I took a bunch of pictures of it, this being two of them.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/bg3.jpg

July came and after having the trans built the August before I had it blow on me 3 times, all the builder told me were they were bad parts, never got a chance to push the truck much, and was told the trans would hold more than I was asking for, well after the third time I convinced myself I would be careful till I could afford to order a level 5 80e or something similar. Well with my luck it blew again, no reason what so ever I was just on my way to work and it locked up. When the fluid was cold it would move, heated up and it would go anyway. So it went back in my garage, and I convinced myself, not so much my friends, that I was going to tear it completly down and build it frame up.

The plans as of right now, a basic over veiw:

Originally I modified the stock frame, and finished it besides my shock mounts

But I figured with this extensive of a build I might as well build one from scratch.

But then I decided I'd rather build my own frame, so I built a table
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/HPIM0192.jpg
Threw this frame on it

Jigged everything I needed

Ordered some custom spec rails from AutoWeld

Starting to lay them out
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/HPIM0260.jpg
Here you can see how the stock hyrdoformed frame compound bends in, so I needed to mimic that

Welded the seams up
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/HPIM0287-1.jpg
Then I used the same method to tie in the rail rails since they were 10" closer together than the mid section

Both sides complete and welded up as one piece
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/HPIM0365.jpg
Had to smooth the welds on the inside before I put them together otherwise I would never have got them smooth
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/HPIM0367.jpg
These welds were tight enough to do, never mind a grinder
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/HPIM0368.jpg
Starting on the next side, also explains how I strengthened those seams, and kept it hidden
Since I did the other side completely and got it right I knew where everything had to be cut and drilled
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/HPIM0367-1.jpg
Drilled the plug weld holes

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/HPIM0397.jpg
Once everything was good, I layed the rail flat, clamped and welded the seam

Once the cooled I needed to grind this one smooth also
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/HPIM0403.jpg
Everything was set just need to get the final welds in this weekend, due to being in school till tomorrow then I got the summer off.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/HPIM0407.jpg
I also cut the rear frame rails down 4" I was going to run them higher but decided against it, so I plated them the same way.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/HPIM0363.jpg
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/HPIM0364.jpg

Also once I get my 2" Spindles in I will be able to layout the front suspension and order my laser cut brackets for that. Also got to send out my 14b to have it narrowed in a week or so. Sucked that I had to cut off all those brackets I welded up already. Oh well, plans change.

GMracer

Well haven't updated due to me forgetting the camera, but I've been working on mainly figuring out my front suspension I wanted to make it perfect at ride height, and finally after moving everything upwards, motor 1.5" up i got my arms at 2* LCA and the uppers at 6* this is set at 5.5" ride height. Tire will sit right at the lip of the front tires.

So with that figured out, I started the front crossmember
crazy cuts to make it fit

Made sure the tierods would be clear, at full turn they hit so I will make a small round notch

Upper control arm frame mounts to be exact, with stock alignment adjustment.
First took care of the rear crossmember, doubles as a bed mount, however I'm considering a tilt bed, not to be a show off, more so for ease of maintenance and such

That's it for now, I should have my t56 in monday then I can mock the motor up and the trans and finish the frame to start the fun part of this build, the complete one off front end. :woot:

so what are you going to do with the old frame.

GMracer
09-26-2008, 07:24 AM
the old frame is up for sale, and cheap too, I don't have the room to store it, I already cut up my factory frame (4wd) so even though I have more than $1000 into it, I will sell for no less than $1000

Thanks guys, I can't wait to drive it either!

thanks!

as for the motor, the significant amount of work, chassis, custom front end, bodywork, wheels, interior, paint ect is going to leave me pretty low on cash, so for the first summer I'm going to run around with a cammed 6.0, bolt ons ect. Then the following winter I'll have the trans built and the motor built, I'm thinking turbo setup but I may settle for a d1sc, 402 I'm thinking about but still that is all up in the air due to the fact I have a lot more on my mind right now. I just can't wait to get the cab on and start building the body from there, it'll still be a silverado, but with some touches GM should have put into production.

yes sir, I played with every design I could and satchell ended up winning for best overall. I wanted to get a little more triangulation out of my lower bars, but since I'm setting up air ride as well I don't want my bars much shorter for fear or wheel movement. Should be ok though.

once again this is impressive, Its not everyday you see a truck like this.

There was a guy about 4 years ago that did the same thing with a 2003 or 2004 extended cab short bed. He built a tube chassis for it and it layed rocker with out much of body drop. I was impressed and he was I think 23 or 24 years old. It was the stock dark metallic blue that came on 05 silverado's.

I have an airbag question... (those new bags look incredible btw)
Why do most folks run the sleeved type on the rear and the bellows type up front? Why not run bellows all around?

GMracer
02-09-2009, 03:14 PM
They are freakin' awesome haha.

Bellow bags are designed to be used on a ratio setup, like the control arms will work the bag 2:1 or 1.5:1. Some guys will use bellows out back, but you typically mount them on a cantilever arm or even the 4 link bar itself, using the bag again in a ratio setup. Sleeves are designed for a 1:1 ration, and tend to ride better and have more control on ride feel with them.

I've seen guys run bellows 1:1 but they don't ride great, and loose lift.

its called a satchel link.. the reason to do this instead of the GM-usual k link konfiguration is that it fixes the rollcenter in relation to teh center of gravity as the suspension moves thru its travel.. and at a lower point than the k-link. , the rollcenter of both the satchell and k link is at the intersection of the angled bars.. so with the k link it moves up and down more than the body does

in short its better for handling, but more difficult to package as it needs a sturdy crossmember below driveshaft level...

One thing I hate is when people run big wheels, or such and the tires and wheel are soo tucked in leaving a huge gap between the bedside and tire, even though sometimes it requires that to fit way up top. I kept it tight, here you can kind of see the tire just touches that lip, well I plan to roll that edge so the wheel will be pretty close to the actual bedside. Laid out I still have a fingers gap up top against the bedside

thanks for the great updates. I've got a set of the same rear tires, but for 18" rims- I wanted a bit more sidewall and wanted to stick with 18's for the front too. My project is a shortbed dakota with an EFI'd 440. It currently runs and drives, but I want to hack the frame at some point. Add C-4 suspension up front and do the rear similar to what you've done.

about the bed tubbing, can't you use the old bed's tubs and weld them into the new bed? and, what are you going to do with the bed's door? that will look weird (the bed higher than the door) overall I like it A LOT

I'm using two of the factory bed tubs, to accomodate the extra width. Should look pretty good when done.
The bed door, you'll see it won't look funny and appear factory.

Ive been working on the rear tubs, and yes, I'll get some pics soon once I get some worth it. Also yes, I'm using DA shockwaves upfront, with internal ride height sensors, air all the way around. Laying on frame, 5" ride height and about 9" of total lift.

I'm going to run sheetmetal inners up front also.

Well you all know I've been waiting for a set of stock tubs, and well I got some and used about 4.5" of them haha, just so I could mimic the dimple the same. Then I added a filler and side piece and what I have is a "stock looking" tub widened 6"

I'm talking with Portbuilt Street Rods right now about doing a C5/6 front suspension in my '85. I'm still deciding on rear suspension, but I'm leaning towards an ART kit that will be modified to use Shockwaves, but I need to talk to the guys @ ART when they come out to the Goodguys Show on the 22nd.

I plan to use an Accuair management system instead of the ART stuff though.

Nice Nice, I was going to run the Accuair till I talked to Tony

MattO
08-04-2009, 02:44 PM
ART builds a hell of a management system from what I am told, but I wanted something that was active while I drive. My truck is my daily and sees it's share of crappy roads and highways, so any advantage I can get, I'll take...

GMracer
08-04-2009, 03:25 PM
As far as I knew you could change it while driving... I could be wrong, and If I am I'll have to adjust that.

MattO
08-04-2009, 03:53 PM
You can adjust the height while driving, but once you set the height, the system falls asleep (according to ART's website). From what I understand, Accuair's system will continually adjust itself as you drive, much like an active suspension system on a modern car like the Corvette.

GMracer
08-04-2009, 06:44 PM
Oh I see what you're saying, not sure if I would want it trying to level constantly.

Porterbuilt
08-04-2009, 09:08 PM
I have some input for your shock dilema... Just do a rocker arm and push-rod for the shocks. You can make the rocker arm the correct ratio to get the length out of the shocks you need. Not sure on the space restrictions... if there's room you can keep the cool shocks, and have an over-complicated, but cool shock set-up.

GMracer
08-05-2009, 04:29 AM
I was thinking about that, and even though I am tight on space I'm going to look into it. I appreciate the input. Worst come to worse I could always sacrifice a little lift.

Any pics of such setups? To get my thoughts flowing...

holy crap an update!

well after a little over a month I took Sunday off to relax and work on my truck, didn't get TOO much done, but back on track.

Tubbed the otherside of the firewall, raised the factory tub of course

Clearance
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/firewall_tubs101809009.jpg
Full lock at 2" ride height, not that it matters since I wouldn't be able to turn that much with fenders, but just goes to show I made them wide enough to allow adequate turning
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/firewall_tubs101809006.jpg

Started on the fenders, bought two brand new OEM fenders, and proceeded to drill the spot welds out and start cutting.

Test fit and marked for height

Cut and now to the special part, ordered two pre-99 inner fenders, going to try to make them work. They taper to quickly so they sit pretty high here, but I'm going to try to modify them. I actually have them installed opposite also, drivers on passenger. Worked better that way.

Let me know what you guys think, I agree to what people keep saying they look big, but I think it's mainly because the motor is so bare. Once the engine bay is filled out it should look a little better

They don't look any bigger then the inner fenders in my little s10

So after some pondering, I think I'm going to nix the OBS inner fenders... not completely sure yet. So I decided I'd go back and finish my exhaust tips. Come to find out I forgot to take into account the taper of the roll pan when I jigged up the tips and made them square to the pan not level with the ground. However it's not terrible, and too drastic so I should be able to live with it. However I need to re cut the openings in the roll pan, for now here are a few pics of them mocked up.

Not much of an update, but figured I'd share. Found a water jet company 2 miles from my home so this is going to help this and future builds tremendously. I have about $170 worth of brackets being cut and will help get me to the next stage of my build... picking them up tomorrow stayed tuned for that.

As far as, have I been working on it? Well yes, but not much to take pictures, however I did finish up the exhaust tip openings, made them bigger and more symmetrical. All metal finished up. As far as the tips I decided on painting them, as well as the front bumper ducts with a chrome paint. This will allow me to do some needed bodywork, the back plate of the tip will be black to help hide the exhaust tubing opening. Stay tuned, I have one more week off from school and with work slow I may have a few "days off" so I can get some good progress.

As far as the rollpan, here are some pictures before I weld it in for good.

Good job! Those exhaust tips are really trick looking. Did you consider making them from stainless? Would save you from having to paint them.

Is there a specific reason you used so much 3/16" sheet on the frame? Seems you could have easily saved a boatload of weight (without compromising strength) by going with thinner material.

Did you do any analysis on the kinematics of the suspension or is it mostly from the hip?

The finish isn't perfect, it was my first shot, so paint will help hide some blemishes. Plus I can't TIG....yet

And I used 3/16" cause that was what I felt suit, I didn't do much strength analysis, but being my first chassis I sure learned a lot.

Nick, I'd like to thank you!! After going over this entire thread a few times and being floored by what you've done, I've decided to put my Ranger back to daily driver status and I've started looking for a rcsb 88-98 Chevy to build. Haven't owned a Chevy in almost 10 years, now I can't wait to have another!

I think it'd be way too expensive to try to make them, a LOT of work went into them,

Update time:
So this water jet thing freakin' rocks! So nice to design them in CAD and have them 1-2 days later.
Couple brackets I had cut, were the cage plates, explained in the video

appears the house is for sale which means I need to find a place to put this thing, both parents will now NOT have a garage, and no room at the shop I built the chassis in. So until then I'm not sure what I'll be doing.

So it's been quite a while since I last posted, never mind updated this thread. February 21, 2010 the day I turned 22, my whole life has changed drastically, in many ways. Rather than bore you with my life story, the house I grew up in was sold I was left without much of a choice where to live, thankfully my brother is letting me stay with him, since I just graduated also, and gives me some time to save some money up for my own place, which will be in about 2 months time. I quit my fathers business of 11yrs, and started working in construction in the city for Avalon Bay Communities, technically in an assistant supers position. Loosing the house lead me to need to find a place to store the truck, which leads to my update I now rent a garage, with storage second floor which will be a hangout, crash pad, and storage area. The garage had a 2 post, 9000lb lift in it, certified and USA made, instead of the last guy (a friend of mine) having to dismantle it I gave him the money for it, to leave it. Even the small amount of work it'll see, it's worth it. If you've worked on a lift you know what I'm talking about. Amongst plenty of other things in my life taking a complete 180 on me, I'm getting ready to get back into the swing of things. After feeling like I finally hit rock bottom with some family issues, my life is headed in what I feel the right direction finally...

So for a quick update a few pictures of the garage, and yes cooks truck is on the lift, first things first is to finish his up.
