Nick Licata's 2nd gen Camaro is a big step closer to being a car again. This is a project car for Camaro Performer's magazine (Project Orange Krate) and we bought the car from the For Sale section of PT.com.

The engine is a 427 small-block that we stole from Super Chevy. I has a Motown block and a somewhat mild cam (for street duties).

Once we get the engine sorted out and a gear vendors installed Nick will be shipping his ride to Pete at Comp-Spec for a LOT of work.

This will include just about everything in the DSE catalog including mini-tubs, subframe, quadra-link and all the cool little widgets they sell.

Also, 1980 called and wants their graphics back so the car will be re-done in fresh orange paint with flat black hockey stripes. We will detail all of this in the book, but we will also post teasers and updates here.

I know Nick can't wait to get he car done. Since he foolishly challenged me to a autocross challenge when the car is done I can't wait either. lol

How it looked when we bought it. I think the price was $7500, which was very fair. The engine was toast and was quickly dubbed "old rod knock"

Nick and Tim Lee guiding it into place. I would have helped but someone has to take the pictures!

Well, it HAS to be orange.. as an homage to the Orange Krate bike in Nick's garage..

Maybe a different shade of orange.. besides, it's not like Dale Jr. came up with the idea first. lol

The graphics should help it stand out a bit. We hope! lol

Plus, imo a better looking rear spoiler and ditched front spoiler will make it look slick. Not sure about the stripe on the hood but we shall see.

Personaly I like flat hoods on second gens...unless the taller cowl hood is need of course. I go back and forth with the rear spoilers, usually I like the taller of the two...but in this case I like the rendering! And it looks good with no front spoiler too!!

Looks killer!!

I LOVE the 427!!!
I'll be following this thread closely.
Nice to see Comp-Spec getting some work from the lateral-g community.
When, (and that's a when), I finally get my 69 Camaro SS, I'd like to have Comp-Spec do my work as well.

why would you take a car more then 3000 miles for a paint job if there are some riddler award painters in your state?

Because Pete could work with us on doing stories of the build. It a pain in the ass for a shop when we have to document everything done on a car. Also, Nick likes Pete's work and wanted to use him.

Besides, it gets sorta boring where every build we do is done by a shop in SoCal.. this should break it up a bit.

Like Steve said, there is a lot of work to be done on this car, not just paint.
Pete and the guys at Competition Specialties do top-notch work, and knowing your stuff is in good hands, and the fact that everything will be done right, is pretty damn comforting.
You have to see what comes out of that shop in person. It's the Sh#t!

Hope you go with polished 18" Fikse's, I like the polished look vs the dark centered look on an orange car.

You can't go wrong with either rear spoiler, I just think spoilers finish of the car somewhat and on 2nd gen's the taller spoiler looks better IMO.

BTW Nick, how's the Captain doing?

Considering the polished ones are already stacked up in Nick's office I would say there's a good chance you will get your wish.

I like the shorter one better.. the tall one looks so "disco".

But that's just me and it's not like I dislike the tall one. I know Nick is going back and forth on it. (oh, the agony)

Please choose the shorter spoiler, the alore of the 70-1/2 along with the subtle look at the back of the car- its perfect. Although I had a front seat at year one when Nick drove the twist machine car off the course- he may need the additional down force of the larger spoiler   Great project, looking forward to seeing it- Rich

Great point Rich! I'm going to need all the down force I can get. I didn't mind taking Steve's car for a little 4X4 excursion; but my ride...I think not.:D

That's another reason I'm keeping the car orange; the cones are the same color. Rupp will have a harder time keeping track on how many I wipe out in a given day.

My 2 cents (actually only worth 1.5 in this economy):

If you run the full front spoiler then the TALL rear would proportionally balance the overall look.

If you arent running the front spoiler then the SMALL lower profile would fit best with an overall subtle look.

Yep, Orange Krate will have the DSE treatment front, back and in-between. It's been a long time comin', and I know this is going to be one bad hot rod.
Normally, I wouldn't ship a car across the county to have just anyone build this project, but in the past we've done work in the magazine with Pete and the guys at Competition Specialties. I can't say enough about their professionalism and craftsmanship. I've seen some cars Pete has done in person -- we're talking totally sick.
No doubt we'll be seeing a very special car come out of that shop.

Now, what's this little rival that someone seems to be dreaming up between Bad Penny and Orange Krate?
It will be a while before we get to that, but I can guarantee there is going to be some drama.

We'll be running the whole build in Camaro Performers, so make sure your subscription is up to date.
We've seen a lot of first-gens with the DSE stuff, so this is going to be great for the second-gen guys.

Making progress.. the body is looking good and we just mated the 416 LS3 stroker to the DSE subframe. Pete over at Comp Specialties is doing a killer job. Also bolted on the Hurst Driveline Conversion's TKO-600 and Centerforce clutch.

Lots of bodywork was needed, sort of slowed the project down, but it's moving much faster now.

Here's the latest on Project Orange Krate.
I have to send major "props" to Pete at Competition Specialties in Walpole, MA. for keeping this project alive. As you can see here, he has put every ounce of his heart and soul into this car. I have to give a shout out to Chuck Vranas who has been doing an excellent job of capturing the build for every article in Camaro Performers magazine. Thus far the project has taken over two years and the attention to detail is paying off dramatically.
Those Lateral-g wheels from Boze make the car look absolutely fantastic and the stance comes by way of the DSE subframe and QUADRALink rear suspension system.
I have to thank Zak and Larry for building such a killer-looking wheel.
Keep following along in the magazine as this project is really starting to come together.
