View Full Version : Opinion on tubbing my 67

My 67 is a true RS/SS, the one problem was the engine #'s didn't match.
Even so, I couldn't get myself to cut the fender wells apart. It wasn't a problem for me because I didn't plans to upgrade the old 350.
One thing lead to another and now I'm getting ready to install the 650 hp LS2... are tubs almost mandatory at this point?
I'm trying to figure out if getting traction is going to be an issue with the narrow tires.
Thanks,
Rich
Hooking 650 hp on 345s is an issue so trying to hook on anything less than a 10" wrinkle wall in the stock wheelwells is going to be tough.
I wouldn't hesitate to cut it if you're already changing to a motor like that.
You aren't going to find many guys with strong feelings against cutting on it here as far rarer has been cut up around here for the sake of style and handling.

I say tub it. But my opinion maybe alittle bias......
But tubing it leads to alot of other issues like axle housing width and axles which lead to more splines in the diff. And Then there are the suspension issues, that go with mini tubs. Do you run leaf springs or just go for the gusto and link the suspension.
Mini tubs can be an evil addition, but it sure make things nicer.

One thing I've learned from hanging out on this website; guys here don't give a rats a&& about cutting into a numbers matching 1st gen. :D
Purist stay far far away from here
This just means more money and time.

Rodger,
The Moser is in and done. too late to change the rear but, I could remove the rear end and cut the axle tubes down.
That's not a very big deal.
The axels are 33 spline

Looking at Mosers website, they affer new housing ends for $85 a pair and they will shorten and respline my axles for $110 a pair.
So, for $200 I could get the rear end shortened. The 33 spline should be suffecient yes?

Rich,
I would cut it. Your not building your car for resale right? And there is likely dozens of numbers matching cars being built every year with repop floors and wheels tubs.....sure it would be a bunch of work to put it back but it can be done. I don't think you would regret it. I understand your other point about trying to keep focus and one thing leads to another but I still say do it.

Damn, a unanimous vote!
My company has seen almost double (and sometimes more) growth each year, after 8 years and 36 employees it's starting to get a little stupid. I just don't have time to work on the car any more. Rodger with Ironworks is picking up the car in a couple weeks to finish it off for me.
Tubbing and narrowing the rear is just money I didn't plan on spending.
Frank; Thanks for the compliment, it's been a long time since i drove my car and I'm starting to get the itch.

Well I was unaware you had done that much on the 4 rear suspension already. The tubs would be a great addition to what you already have.
Narrowing the housing is no problem, with all you already have. I have 3 set of axles right now that I have to narrow soon, so we can send a big box to good ol Moser. I'm a dealer for those guys also.
I'm excited to start on your project after seeing the bad ass parts you have gathered in prep for this project.

First tub it, second you don't have to narrow the rear for tubs. All narrowing the rear will give you is more wheel lip.

Kevin; Whats the largest tire I can put under the cdar without narrowing the rear?
Rich

The new crate motor was disassembled and worked over by Watson racing and Engineering.
Crank was reworked
Comp. cams (Custom grind)
Forged pistons
Jesel Mohawk Rockers
Jesel Lifters and push rods
AFR Heads (new heads were sent out, welded up and machined)

Rich-
Glad to hear business is doing well. In this ecomony it's rare! You'll be in good hands sending the car to Rodger. Those guys do top notch work! With all those Nova's down there hopefully they still know how to work on Camaros! That motor is a nice piece. Watson know's how to make good power. Keep us posted! Car is going to be killer!!

Brent,
Glad you know who Ben Watson is. Most folks never heard Ben or his shop!
Mike Blackstone holds a few world records and Ben Watson is one of the top Pro-Stock drivers in NHRA. There shop is nothing short of amazing.

I met Mike Blackstone awhile back. He did quite a few motors for some friends of mine before teaming up with Watson. I haven't been to the new shop but have heard enough to know it is first class, then again I don't think Watson knows anything less. Wish he could a little better racing. Pro Stock is about as tough as it gets.

rich like kevin said you dont NEED to shorten the rear it will just give you bigger lips on the rear wheels if you do...you can run the same size wheel either way...are you doing 18s? 335 will be good. vins 68 looks to be that way cause hes got 12" wheels but the lips arent super huge.

Cut it up, if you do it right it will not matter to the value of the car, if it hooks up great it will be worth more then having a car that is all show and no go with that engine.

I was really hoping 355's were possible. I had no idea I could get that tire size without narrowing the rear.

The more backspacing you have though the harder the rear tire is to get off in certain applications. The brake rotor size, ride height, and the actual amount the tire tucks into the fender are what make that issue more concerning. No body wants to have to pull the coilovers and driveshaft just to change a tire. Sometimes it cannot be avoided, But why not if you can?

Rich,
If you want anything wider than 335's you are going to need to move the frame rails and build custom wheel houses. Rodger is right in some app's it can be a problem to remove a rear wheel if the inner barrel is to big, but with the radius-ed wheel openning on a 67-8 Camaro no problem!
FYI the 69 Camaro we built for Steve Broscoe is running 345/35ZR18's on 18X13 wheels.

We have a couple cars running 345s in DSE mini tubs, 355s would be pushing it a bit!

Mikescustomcars.com sells a set of rear frane rails and tubs to get those tires in there. Kind of pricey but sweet. Check out his site under projects, then go to Dwayne Robinsons car . Nice stuff.
