I'm considering ordering an off the shelf exhaust kit for my 68 BB Camaro.

Looking at a few different brands, like flowmaster, and Pypes. Seems to be a few different outlets to order these from and not much price variation between them.

To get a custom system put under here i'm looking at the following prices approx:
- 2.5" mild steel - $1000
- 3" mild steel - $1400
- 3"stainless - $1800

The prices are pretty ordinary, and i'm not 100% sold on the quality of them. It's a bit hit an miss, i've seen some great jobs come out of the custom shops here, and some really bad ones.

To order a system from the U.S, i can get 2.5" systems from about $400 up:

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=MPE%2D15896&N=700+4294920008+4294925083+4294908216+115&autoview=sku

3" stainless from about $650 up
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=MPE%2D15899&N=700+4294920008+4294925083+4294908216+115&autoview=sku

. Factor in $400 frieght (has to be fedex, or UPS or something, as USPS surface-ship will take 3 months to get here) and i'm still out in front.

My question is, who has used these systems?
Do they fit well?
Flow well?
What brand should i get?

The other benefit by buying an off the shelf system is i dont need to leave the car in a shop, and potentially get scratched up etc. It's only just come home from the paint shop, and so far i havent damaged it at all during assembly.

Thanks in advance for the feedback guys.

I think for the most part if your car is stock the off the shelf systems work OK. If you have a 4 link, mini tubs or if your car is lowered you my run into some problems.

i just put a 3" magnaflow stainless exhaust on my car. i picked it up on ebay for 450. it sounds great. i love it. only fitment problem was the x-pipe had to be moved back a little to clear the trans. other than that, its a great system. all mandrel bent, looks good and sounds good. good luck in whatever choice you make.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Mine is stock 12 bolt rear end, only concern is the staggered shocks being an SS car.

I'm pretty sold on the 3" stainless magnaflow system... now to confirm shipping prices.

No, that is all I have. Cam on that one is 236/242. It is one a 112LC and has a 4 / 7 swap so it is no lopey at all.

Dammit, i was getting excited reading down the thread.... Couldnt get my credit card outta my wallet quick enough....

Work me out a deal on freight Frank, and I'll order it through you....

USPS Air Freight seems to be the best (if it's not too big for them to take)
Fedex and UPS are usually pretty expensive from past experience....

3" Stainless system under $1k inc freight = I'll take one please :)

I'm pretty keen to order one of the magnaflow 3" kit, looks like Summit is pretty sharp on their pricing.

Have read a few threads on camaros.net about some fitment issues with them when going behind a big block... anyone had this?

Has anybody got pics of this system installed under a first gen?

My car is 454, unknown cam, team-g intake, 800dp holley, pacemaker tri-y extractors, and T350, will have 2500-3000 stall.

Should i be looking at 2.5" or 3" for best streetable combo.

From what i've read the x pipe will quieten it down a lot, but is 3" too big for my current setup? Alloy heads or a procharger is on the cards down the track, but is it going to lose a lot of low down response on the street with a 3" now?

I've also read a lot of good feedback on the Pypes kits... Would this be a better option then the magnaflow?

My preference order at the moment:
- magnaflow
- Pypes
- Flowmaster

i had no problem fitting the 3" magnaflow system with the x-pipe. the only fitment issue i had was that the x had to be moved back about 6-10" to clear my trans. i'm running a 496 BBC with T56. if i was using a th-350/400 or 4 speed, i don't think there would have been any problem. GP Superstore is the place to buy from if you do. Frank and Lisa have been great to me on buying alot of the parts that i needed for my car, even some that i didn't need:lol:
