After reading many posts about the painting options is it recommended to put a less expensive base coat under a high end clear; the thought being why waste $$ of the base since the Clear is where the ultimate quality/gloss and UV protection are..... Will the Base still fade? I've heard it may take more BC to cover.
For Example - Would you use PPG's Omni BC under their high end 2021 Clear?
Thanks.....

cheap base will not cover nearly as well or spray as well as the higher lines, especially if its metallic etc.
if you use 3 quarts on an overall with high dollar base, you wil probably use 4-5 quarts of cheap, which more then likely be close in cost to the cheap base
i use standox and all basecoats are 95 a quart, other then black, which is 75, however some ppg and sherwin williams reds, and others can be 200 a qt.
use good stuff

Dupont's Nason base coat, topped with a dupont chromaclear is a safe combo.
Funny your posts remind me of this guy at work... he's a yankee, but means well so I don't hold it againest him. Kinda slow, and can't pick a color to paint his boat (oops, chevelle), but we can't all be perfect.

That Yankee Boy sure is a nice fella AND he's probably gonna have his car dun before that Redneck 2Bad4Ya gets his little block camaro dun. Come to think of it, it that damn redneck would stop over analyzing everything on his buddy's Chevelle, that Yankee boy would probably have his ride dun....
The Race is ON... My $$ on Chevelle-Boy having his car dun 1st.... That sure would be too bad for ya, now wouldn't it ;)

Funny that Standox and Nason are mentioned. I know someone who is going to use Nason BC and Standox CC. The Nason BC was significantly less $$ than the others and my understanding is the Standox CC is top notch.
Has anyone done that combo before; NasonBC & StandoxCC?

If your are going to mix, at least mix within a family, although I don;t recommend mix and match of any system. Depending on the color will greatly vary the cost. I know some Chromabase colors are around the $50-$60 quart range. The reds and a blue I shot recently are in the $100 range.
