View Full Version : New member with Viper powered 70 Charger
Howdy folks, I stumbled across this site while working on my suspension and brake setup for my Charger.
I've owned this Charger for about 30 years now, and now I am able to do the things to it that you can only dream about as a teenager.
I am in the midst of mocking the car up with a Gen 3 Viper V10/6spd drive train  . It has an alterkation front end and I will be purchasing a Dana 60, wheels and brakes for it shortly. That should complete the mockup.
A minitub has been done to the car with spring relocation. I'll be running 335's out back. Lots of frame modifications for stiffing (frame rail connectors, torque boxes, XV lower radiator support, XV Shock tower/firewall supports), the frame rails were boxed in while replacing the trunk and floor pans.
Here are a couple of pictures:
Here are some more shots of installing/mocking up the V10. I'll be using 18x8 and 18x12 Forgeline ZX3R as shown...

I dig the rat-fink shifter.
SRT-10 Ram engine donor?
Yes - it's from a SRT-10 Ram.
The "Rat-Fink" shifter is the stock unit - it is there just for mockup of the trans tunnel. I'll swap it out once I figure out the console...

Awesome project GT. What's the overall diameter of your rear tire? Is that Mickey Thompson?

Howdy Joni. Thanks but no thanks, 472 ELEPHANT is enough for me. Bigger brakes and wheels, who knows... You know what I mean, SSP has so big rear wheel openings that tire diameter must be 29" or bigger.
Any progress with Camaro?

Awesome project youv'e got to use a 70 Road runner pistol grip shifter, would look killer .

The tires are BF Goodrich g-force T/A's 335/30ZR18 with an overall height of ~26". I'm playing with ride height right now. Probably go about 3" lower than stock which will give me ~4" of ground clearance at the lowest point. Here are 3 quick/dirty mock ups. Stock height, 3" lowered, 6" lowered :unibrow:
I plan to run a pistol grip shifter with a custom flamed maple plum crazy handle. The exterior of the car will be it's stock plum crazy purple and the handle will be the only other purple item on the car. Should look nice in the all black interior.

Awesome. I'll be following this build closely. Keep us updated with lots of pics. I'm especially interested in seeing what you do with the interior and slight subtle little mods that just clean up the car that little bit more. Hopefully I can incorporate some of them in my own project.
I'll be really interested to see what you think of the whole XV setup. I can only dream of putting all that tech under my car the next time around.

Man, I can't wait to see more of this ride. Build quality looks great, going to be a awesome ride. Keep at it.

I will tell you one thing right now - the build quality and engineering of the Alterkation is top notch. It's been a breeze to work with thus far, and Bill Reilly will spend as much time with you as you need - the guy is awesome. I went with 550lb coil overs in the front. That was the stiffest that Bill had, yet I suspect that I will need heavier ones. I'll figure that out after the build is done and I can drive it.
The stock suspension with a 1" sway bar provides about 880lbs of roll resistance. This setup, with 1.25" bar and 550 springs yields about 1300lbs of roll resistance.
The wheel rate should be around 293lbs... top autocrossers run 350.

Awesome, Welcome!!
I'll put a bunch of pictures up later this month. I have the rest of the necessary components to mock up the car at ride height - for final check of clearances/etc. The 14" Wilwoods behind the Forgelines look awesome

Hey, I don't know if you are familliar with the Viper engines- I am. I lost my Viper engine in my SRT-10 Viper Truck. After researching and talking with a well respected Viper Tech, I come to find out that there is this nasty little oil cavitation problem at the #3 Rod Journal on the crankshaft, which will lead to a spun bearing. Another is the junk pistons that are factory stock. You need to replace them as the crowns outer edge of the pistons top likes to crack and fall apart- taking out sections to the first ring land.... I have numerous well detailed pictures of this along with talking to many whom experienced the same devestation my engine went thru.
FYI- I had the #3 rod break, when that broke it took out #4, punched a hole thru the side of the block and wipe out the oil galley tunnel that ride under the cam shaft feeding oil to the engine.....
Guys have been pulling stock engines apart and finding broken pistons.
Just wanted to give you a little heads up and possibly save you from subsequent impending engine doom.

when we (lowdown hotrods) fitted a viper in our cuda with the alterkation front we used 450lb springs and were fine, i know the charger is bigger but i dont think there would be that much extra body weight over the front end, cool project! keep the pics coming.
Kryptonite: Thanks. I went with the 550lbs on the Alterkation and larger sway bar. The v10 fits fine. Had to make custom mounts. The 3-ujoint steering column coupler from flaming river made it a breeze as well.
Haulin_asp - Yes, I am aware of the Gen 3 V10 issues... but this normally aspirated in a significantly lighter vehicle (no squeeze or gas) and I don't plan to rev it, so it should be fine. I have been following your saga on VTCOA...

Should be a nice project when done.
Got some nice "steamrollers" on the back of that car. LOOKS GOOD!!!
I started the mock up progress - ran into a number of issues... hence, the reason for mocking up  I'll post questions to those issues elsewhere.
I have found the following issues thus far:
1) Rotors fitting on the axles.
2) Axle/tire too far forward in wheel well
3) Ride height to high
Here are some shots from a couple of days ago. I started with the rear end and these are shots of the rear brake install. Wilwood 14" with integral parking brake (nice setup btw).
