I've got a 9" in my 68 Camaro that came out of a '68 Bronco. I was going to turn the flanges down and redrill them for Chevy bolt pattern but on of the axles is bad. So, I'm trying to decide what to do. I've never bought aftermarket axles before but there's a first time for everything. I've filled out the data sheets from Moser for each axle but I haven't pulled the trigger on that, yet. Does anyone here have a recommendation?

The car is not being built for competition drag racing and it doesn't have a mega-horsepower motor in it either. Really, all I'm looking to do is to replace the existing 28 spline axles with good ones that have a Chevy bolt pattern and run them on the street. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I've had good luck with Yukon axles through Randy's ring and pinion- Kyle Sullivan is a great sales rep. good product and good prices 1-866-989-8450-Chris

Thanks for the reply. Can you tell me about how much the axles set you back?

You'll also want to determine whether you have a small-bearing (2.834") or big-bearing (3.150") housing since that will need to be specified when ordering new shafts. You may not see any need for 31-splines now, but it sure would be cheap insurance since you're swapping shafts at this point anyhow...but it sort of depends on what carrier you have. If it's open, new side gears and you're good to go. If it's a Trac-Loc, you may need a new carrier. Someone at Randy's R&P, Currie Enterprises, Moser, Dutchman, etc should be able to answer that more definitively for you.

If you have a big-bearing housing, you then should have the choice between sealed ball-bearings and the heavier-duty, SET20, tapered roller bearings. Either bearing should be fine for what you're doing, but keep in mind that the SET20's need to be lubed with the gear oil and as such no inner oil seal should be used. The seal with the SET20s is captured on the shaft by the bearing.

Yukons run about $219.00/set complete with ball-bearings and retainers last time I shopped for them for my Bronco at http://completeoffroad.com/c-59879-ford-9.html. Granted, you'll need the GM pattern and register, but that should at least give you an idea.

Apogee -- The housing that I have is a small bearing unit and I have the Trac-Loc carrier with 350 gear. Since it's not being built as an ultimate racer, I'm planning on sticking with the 28 spline axles. I've still got a ton of $$$ to spend on it so the added cost of converting it to 31 spline is not in the budget.

To tell you the truth, I wasn't planning on new axles anyway. I was planning on using the stock axles and cutting the flange down and redrilling them for Chevy bolt pattern but one axle was bad. I toyed with the idea of buying another stock axle but they cost as much as the Moser custom. Unfortunately, like potato chips, you can't have just one ;) .

Thanks for the leads on the axle sources. I guess it's time to go shopping...

There are a few places that can do the axles for you. I've twisted, and, or broke stock 28 spline axles, never any aftermaket ones. The last set I ordered thru Summit Racing, Moser ones I think. Cheaper, and faster.

The cheapest option would be to find a used 28-spline takeout from another Bronco, but then you'd still have to modify them. You may consider checking out the Early Bronco boards...there are plenty of guys upgrading to 31 or 35 spline axles such that the 28-splines come available for cheap/free fairly often. The biggest EB board with the most active classifieds is probably classicbroncos.com. Might be worthwhile to post a "Wanted" ad.
