View Full Version : My project 69 Z28 with zz 502

When I purchased my Z28, it came with a 396 that someone dropped in at some point and had swapped out for the 302. I was unhappy with the performance and figured I would bite the bullet and do it right.
Call it Pro Touring Trans Am
After spending weeks researching and shopping around local engine builders, crate builders and whatnot, I ultimately decided on the zz502 simply because its a great base for me to build upon. I wanted streetable performance, and not to piss off the neighbors too badly :D Keeping the M22...
Car in question:

Waiting on the muncie to come back from rebuild, the radiator and a few more small things and should be ready to rock. Maybe 2 weeks?
Can't wait to get the car back and hit the dyno. I think I'll be needing to upgrade my wheels/tires pretty soon as well. I have a feeling I'm going to be burning through these 255's pretty quickly
I'm thinking 17s with a 275 in the rear. I'd like to avoid minitubbing if I can. I really like the traditional minilite look:

The LT-III's in 17s look pretty damn good as well too. Anyone know this car?

I'll keep everyone posted. Looking forward to summer with some more power

Reworking all the window tracks/hardware, swapping out the steering wheel for a Rosewood repop, and putting on modo innovations pedals. Lokar throttle cable setup as well, with pedal assembly.
Cool, keep us posted.

some new pix from lunch today. Ordered a new chrome alternator to match everything. I'm concerned about the clutch I put in though. Its a RAM clutch rated for 450hp.
The car will mainly see street use, and with 255s in back, I can't imagine traction being possible, I'll see how it holds up I guess. :willy:
I'd like to eventually slap some slicks on it and see what its capable of at the track, but the clutch and 12 bolt are the weak links currently.
I'm also trying to decide what type of electric fan setup to go with. Would a single electric fan + the standard blade fan be sufficient or should I bite the bullet and buy a real nice aluminum shroud dual fan setup.

man that 502 is really tame sounding. I bet it has plenty of torque though.
How do you like it and whats the warranty these days on those?

Haven't had a chance to drive the car yet. Waiting on some more parts to finish it off, alignment, and having some electrical work done.
It actually sounds tamer than the L78 396 I had. Warranty is unlimited mile for one year. I plan on hopping it up a bit after that

thats the goal. Traditional trans am racing styling, with a little protouring performance thrown in for good measure.
I need to decide if I'm going to go with PSE minilites, LC-III or Vintage wheel work minilite replicas tho

Got the car back for the weekend to get a feel for everything and see how it holds up. Car is stupid fast and easily some of the most fun I've ever had in a street car. Took it through Malibu today and all the way up through oxnard for a total 120 mile loop around los angeles. Temps remained low and the car runs better than I could ever expect. My only concerns are the alignment and the clutch holding up. I can feel it slipping already. Need to step up to a dual friction I think...
The 502 is stupid explosive when you want it to be, and tame like a Honda at a stop light or just cruising. I had to fill up TWICE today. I think its averaging around 8mpg.

been daily driving the car for about a month. About every weekend been hitting the canyons all over LA. Last weekend Angeles crest. Had an absolute blast at 6am. Ran through my first set of pads already
Upgraded to carbon metallic pads they have more grip. Got a tow hitch for my daily driver so I can get some track days lined up over the next couple months. I've got a decent amount of track experience but have never driven something this raw and unrefined at the track. Should be real fun.
I also bit the bullet and bought a set of CCW Classics in matte black finish with Toyo Proxes RA1.
17x8.5 245
17x9.5 275
Exact same setup as this car.

John at CCW is great to deal with and turnaround time is impressive. He was a little concerned about that tropical storm though...
Will post pictures when the new set arrives. Some thief stole the numbers off the side of my car while it was in Beverly Hills of all places
From last week:

Next on the list: Paint or a full vinyl wrap in traditional racecar livery... not sunoco...

Header supercomps. Took tons of massaging and quite a few dimples to get them to work. Ground clearance is now an issue as well.

Got a nice surprise from the UPS man last night at 8:15. I felt bad the guy was working so late with such a large delivery. Offered him a beer.
John at CCW is great to deal with. Turnaround time was about 2.5 weeks even with the tropical storms hes been dealing with.
245 fronts 275 rears. 17x8.5 and 17x9.5 No clue on the offsets John knew them off the top of his head.
Can't wait to get them on.

Also have some Recaro Speed S seats on order, schroth 5 points, and a custom crossbar for the belt mounts beneath the rear package tray. Should be a pretty slick setup.
I'm looking forward to be able to drive the car without sliding all over the place in my seat. Maybe now my head won't hit the headliner either

Sorry for the bad cell phone pix. Will shoot the car with a decent camera when the recaros are in.
New leafs, QA1 adjustable rear shocks, Hotchkis rear sway, Hotckis Subframe connectors all new rear stance. Put the wheels on during lunch. One stud was crossthreaded so gonna have to fix that.
It sits a bit high but will settle.

Loved the Angeles run, the 502 sounds great and the addition of the new tires and wheel look great and obviously make it handle ALOT better. Gotta be a blast to drive. As far as the 8mpg well welcome to big blocks as you know... Im going to put a Q-jet(800) cfm on mine to help with the gas consumption. The smaller primaries will help around town as long as I can keep my foot out of the secondaries. But when they open up and kick in it should get crazy quick.
tony byram

Just a quick update: I installed the 800cfm Q-jet and that one change made a LOT of difference in the fuel consumption! As well as the performance! It flat out screams now!At cruising speeds 70mph @2100 rpm the Q-jets running off the small front primaries and seems to be getting MUCH better mileage! And when you floor it, it simply squats, chirps the tires and shoots like a rocket with that lay you back in the seat peformance. You may want to consider a Q-Jet from JET performance or one of the other carb builders. It worked well for me, will let you know what my latest mpg numbers are. This will be combined, around town and highway driving. Cant promse you will get the same results as I did, but I can already tell that my performance and fuel are ALOT better! Good Luck!

some new additions to the car. Recaro Speed S seats with Schroth 5 point belts. Fabricated some custom brackets that are welded to the unibody support/package tray, and then a cross bar in between the C pillars... Hope it will pass tech at a few local events or I'm going to have to cage the car.
