well I am finally into primer. here are some pics. I had some 1/8 plate lazer cut for my rear panel accents. the lower piece will have a solid piece of metal behind it except at the bottom for the exhaust. As you can see in the photoshoped picture. I wish it was blue but it will be yellow. I chopped the drip rails and molded the side scoops in so they look deeper and smoother. My intro is in the intro forum. heres the pics

Why will it be yellow, is it a customer car?

zingercustoms

yes, it is a customer's car, a cheap dirty customer, my redneck older brother. :D He likes yellow for some odd reason. At least it will be two tone with silver, and the yellow will be a metallic with pearl. not soooo bad.

I have a mod in mind for the TA wing. I have done a quick edit in photoshop showing the basic change. I want to compliment the shape in the rear taillight panel and bumper, as well as add a LED 3rd brake light. What do you like better? The way it is or the change. Also I have made some progress since these pics, just moved into my new shop a couple months back and have this in the next stage of primer, underbody is primered and undercoated with truck bed liner. looks great. this will be a driver so I didn't go crazy on the underneath. I have added a flush mount chopper style pop up gas cap to the lower honeycomb panel as well as made that panel match the shape of roll pan. I have also installed the mounting brackets for both rear panels and they look good with flush mount allen head screws. I have designed the rear tail pipes also, 2 1/4" x 1 3/4" oval pipe(not sure those are the exact demenssions but close), there will be 4 alltogether diving under the gas tank and up behind the honeycomb lower panel. It will be a dominent part of the rear view. I also plan on changine the headlight covers to be squinted and angled for a modern look and also add some to the front bumper to make it appear shorter in height and more aggressive. what do you think? I will post updated pics soon.
Thanks for your help!

Leave the wing like it is and you should be able to find a wide enough strip of single- row LED's to graft into the back and leave the stock profile. I've seen LED's on street rods for turn signals that were COMPLETELY flush mounted with the fender.

A 3rd brake light would be a welcome addition to that car.

Well it has been a while since I posted last, moved into new shop, finished up some other projects. I have the bird in its last stages of primer, I have the bottom finished up and the firewall delete plate done. My brother decided to have me install tubs (I'm currently installing those) and we are going with the 4 link rear and tubular control arms up front with coilovers and everything on the stock frame. I have more pics I can post later of the rest of the parts. I have the rear custom plates bent up and the mounting places welded up, looks good all together. I have a few areas to work on with the wing and such but it is really close to being ready for paint. We are going with 2005 Lambo pearl yellow on it with Alsa spray chrome and satin black accents on the rear and top. I want to get a render soon. Anyway here are the pics.

Great looking project! I really like the rear bumper fitment! Would you be interested in making any more of those rear panels?

zingercustoms

Actually I have been kicking the idea around of pulling molds for glass fiber pieces off the rear end lower area and a whole bumper plug. I also may pull molds off the front fenders for the scoops, I was going to make it from the bodline down and make a carbon fiber add on piece that would work with any fender with basically no modifications just stick it on. I probably should, the hard part is done on the car and I saved the files for the rear panels, pretty simple to reproduce. I still want to do some mods to the front end but time is running out as well as money. anyway, thanks for the compliments

A 'glass rear bumper would be interesting... we're starting a '69 Bird project and the rear bumper sticks out way to far... I'll chat with the owner about some ideas. I'll keep you posted!

Does anyone know of a very small hi flow muffler that is good quality? I am needing to get two lined up for the exhaust system. the way I am doing it requires small sizes to tuck up inside. I don't have exact measurements, I just wondered if there were some compact aftermarket one available. thanks.

Here are some updates. I did this last night and it was gone this morning, weird,....anyway, agian.....

I am going to paint it the yellow the new camaros have. The gas filler is a chopper style pop open tank, never mind the bumper being loose, I didn't tighten it down for the pics. Here is a render I shopped to get an idea of paint scheme. I am finishing up the front end and DSE 4link and hope to dismantle and paint soon. Those aren't the wheels we are going to use. I stole them from a truck I had in the shop getting work done on the brakes. Just had to se it lay low.

Thanks for the replies. I would rather it be blue too. but.......And the goal wasn't a TA clone, just liked the scoops and wing. What do you think of the stripes on the hood? You can't see it clear in the pic but I plan on a line drawing of a more contemporary bird (kinda grunge art style) done so faintly that you won't see it until close up, probably in pearl. anyway, I have to work on that render.

Yeah, LOL.
Pontiac does run in the family tho-
You see my Grandfather ordered a Bonneville conv. in 1967, he had ordered 2 before it, and just like having them, but my mom got married that year and he never let that car go. He only drove it in the summer and since he was a bachelor since my mom was 2 years old he just tinkered with it. He kept it garaged and well cared for. Many times he was asked if he would sell it and the answer was always " not for love or money". He never remarried and kept that car. It was perfect, he ordered it with a 428 ho and holley carb on it, not sure but i think it was the original, power top, ac, power windows...etc. navy blue with a baby blue top. anyway it was perfect until some lady hit him in a parking lot while he was stopped, it pushed him into the car in front and really messed up the rear end. That was in the mid 90's , Maco did a quarter panel replacement leaving 3/4 in gaps for the doors and nasty frame work. a maco paint job and the car was never the same. He still babied it and drove it in the summer. He passed away about 4 years ago. and the car has been sitting at my parents outside for about 6 years since he had to be cared for. I have the car now and am not sure what I will do with it. I would love to restore it or make it a lean mean machine but know how much money that cost and time it takes. starting a business is hard. and slow. We threw around the idea of using his 428 and tranny, badges and interior pieces in the fire bird. I would hate to desicrate it but at the same time, will I ever be able to do something with it? I have some awsome memories in that car, the sound of that exhaust rumbling through downtown Fort Wayne, when he picked us up because my little brother was just born. And waiting for that boat to appear coming down our long drive way. I loved to push the button to put the top down.

The problem is that it has some pretty bad rot starting underneath, at least it is inside now. I thought using its heart and soul would be a really cool way to make that motor roar down the road again. The "Bonni-bird"!
I think we will leave it untouched.....maybe:thumbsup:

That is a cool car.

Tough decision based on what you have going now. But if you just committed a couple hours each week, maybe 1/2 a day, that might work.

Or, if you honestly don't have the time and/or money it might be best to sell it. Find someone who really likes that model Poncho and wants to keep it together.

I've been following your build, and I think your work is great. I'm building a 69 T/A vert tribute and I noticed your photo shop of the rear spoiler light. This is my version on my car. I used a 3rd brake light from a toyota celica.

Very tough decision with the Bonneville, but here's my thoughts. With that much history and such high sentimental value, you will probably regret doing anything short of holding onto the car and restoring it at some point. Remember, once its gone, its gone forever.

Great work!, I may be hunting down a light like that. I think everyone is right, selling is not really an option for me but I may start doing some renderings to see what the potential is. I love the front end and hate the side profile of the rear quarters but the tail panels is awsome. I thought about chopping the length of the quarters some and seeing what that looks like. I could still fit my s-10 in the trunk that way. LOL.

Sorry for the double post!
We finally decided on the wheels for the Firebird. They are 09 corvette spyder wheels, chrome, 9.5x 18 in front and 12x19 in back.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/Firebird.jpg

The tires are the new Generals 325/35 rear 275/30 front. I wanted to go with something way nicer and more custom on the wheels but we have a budget problem now that the economy went to the toilet. They will fill the car out well. We had a ford 8.8 rear laying around out of an explorer and the width is doable with minor spacers, It has 373 gears, and had disk brakes too. I plan on welding on some support tubes and making it look pretty with a new cover. NOT what we planned before! We are also deciding on the front clip. We will most likely go with a speedtech since we bought the wheels with their dimensions in mind. We have to get the spindles and hubs.
What would be the cheapest price wise to get the spindles, should I go with 2" drop or regular, and the hubs to fit up with the corvette bolt pattern? We plan on using stock corvette brakes up front.
This is getting out of my area of knowledge as I am a body guy. So I appreciate the help.

Anyway, I have the last coats of primer on the doors and fenders. I may have color on them next week, Also the body is ready to get its last coat on monday.
I am on it full time now so I will be posting updates more frequently.

Your progress looks nice on the '69.

I am interested in your rear end bumper as well as your modified scoops. Please let me know if you intent to follow through with this.

What size are your side walls on your tires? Your tires and wheels fit nice.

Did you have to modify your back seat with the mini tubes?

Thanks for your help.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/1969Firebird26.jpg
I cut slits in the inside of the fenders where the scoops are to make a place for a metal mesh, something like this. I think I will have some cut to this shape on a water jet that matches the honeycomb panels on the rear, also the plastic inserts in the nose will not be square mesh but honeycomb. I will have pieces cut for them as well.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/1969Firebird12.jpg
In order to get the cheeeep fiber glass wing to fit snug I had to remove the regular mounting parts and sand the bottoms so they sat tight on the deck lid. I put some 80grit sticky sand paper on the deck lid where the wing sets and sanded in the same plane so the bottoms match perfect. Then I epoxied bolts in, not what I wanted as far as looks go on the inside but I will have to come up with a creative solution.

Big time fan of the '69 Camaro since I first saw them in 1968. But the unique styling aspects of the '69 T/A 'Birds really give them a leg up on the Camaro's IMO. No surprise takeoffs on the '69 T/A's are becoming more and more popular. Watching your creative build with a lot of interest.

I just finished the last one I have in line and now I have to get this thing done so I can take it to some shows next spring.
Glad to have color. not the color I had in mind but I can work with it. The pics don't make the yellow look as good as it does, it is the same color as the new Camaro. I plan on some 3 tone silver stripes on the hood and over the top to the trunk, not your typical racing stripes, kinda hard to explain so I will just have to show you, I hope to have something figured out by the end of the week, maybe. I already sprayed the dash and firewall semi-gloss black, I will get pics later. I have to spray clear tomorrow and then we will scuff and lay the stripes out and then 4 more coats of clear. I will get the other parts going into color next week. here are the pics

Here is what I did today, tomorrow I will get some help with the hood. I am a one man shop now and hanging doors and fenders with fresh paint by yourself is nerve racking to say the least! Everything looks consistant and line up well so the hood should go good too. I am still messing with the rendering of the design for the stripes on the hood, decklid and hood. I will post more later, thanks for your comments so far. I took these with my phone so they aren't the best quality.

Looks great as is! Nice fit, I can tell a lot when into the body work! I TRUELY don't think it needs stripes.........

Will you paint the back side of the fenders and other panels black?

Wicked looking shop!!!
i think if it were mine i would maybe do the stripes on the hood with the grey comming off the back of the scoops and the white really thin down the side of the hood center????? if you gotta have the stripes.
but it looks very good.

That's looking great! I have a question, though. I read that the subframe and motor assembly can affect the fender to door alignment. Is this true? I'm asking because I was wanting to test fit my new fenders and my Firebird is on a dolly sort of like yours.

Thanks:thumbsup:

Thanks for the compliments, and yes I am going to be painting the inside of fenders and such black with a liner. The car will be a driver so it needs some good protection. As far as the alignment issues with the frame, yes it does affect the alignment after you get your subframe bolted up and especially after you get it on the ground with the engine in it. The gaps are close so I am only assembling it to make sure everthing is cool for now and to see it together for the stripes and for a little inspiration. It makes me see the project coming together. I have had this apart and back together at least 4 times. I will get the front frame mocked up with the front end parts on it in a couple weeks and then I will get it rolling with the front and rear wheels in there final destinations. Then I will break it down and do the scuff, stripes, and more clear. I will have a better idea of the alignment but until we acturally drive it I won't be opening the doors very quickly with out watching the front edge!:_paranoid
One thing I can say is to have the fenders bolted up and have them tight every where so you can do the blockin. Other wise it may have some weird waves and things when you bolt them on and they move in shape. I got that advice from a local pro.

Here is the next evolution of the pic for the stripes.....a little crooked but just for brain storming.
the scoop openings will not be black, obnoxious!
The darker metalic on the hood isn't finished just sill trying to get it the way I want.
The light part is staying that way.

Well, I am back to work on the bird. Haven't touched it for months and now I am in full swing since I have no other jobs. Kinda nice, would like to get this done. I decided on the name "WILD TURKEY" for the build. I know it sounds like many bird related names, fire chicken etc.. But this really fits. Me and my brother are probably the biggest private costumer for Wild Turkey 101 proof. In fact this car was concieved with wild turkey in our hands, on the rocks with water of course...

Seriously tho, my brother buys it buy the case. sips on it every night and has a ward robe of Wild Turkey t-shirts. We even toured the distillery.

So here is where I left off, mocking up the tires...
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/1969Firebirdbyzingercustomsllc.jpg

I know some of this build seems backwards but the ebb and flow of money have caused many mind changes in what we can and can't do, not my decisions.
I have started to shape the front end to what I have envisioned. I have always hated the stupid rubber gaskets for the front and the endless adjustments to make it fit, I am building a one piece front now. I will pull a mold off this and make a piece that is part carbon fiber (original bumper) and the rest fiberglass, painted body color. I have some halo/projector headlights and fog lamps to install. I do plan on making more parts off this to sell. Here is the pics so far....

Also I found a way to make the glass have a more modern look. I plan on making all the chrome trim satin black but wanted the windows to be dark on the edges like new cars so the trim doesn't look so stark. I tried and failed to make the black glass primer stick (came of with the tape on the edges) then I remembered something from art class, Etching cream. It gives the glass just enough texture to make the black primer stick better. I did a step by step for any who are interested. I will just illustrate the back window. I went off a new Camaro for reference.

Start by cleaning the glass.
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/lateral%20g/DSC01275.jpg

Tape off the front side of the glass (part that faces out)
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/lateral%20g/DSC01276.jpg

Flip window over and start the mask.

I laid out tape starting from the edges to keep the same contours as the glass
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/lateral%20g/DSC01277.jpg

You can use various sized round objects to get the radius you want....
I went tighter at the top.
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/lateral%20g/DSC01280.jpg
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/lateral%20g/DSC01282.jpg
Fine line up against the tape and around the lines you mark
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/lateral%20g/DSC01283.jpg
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/lateral%20g/DSC01284.jpg
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/lateral%20g/DSC01285.jpg

Come inside with wider and wider tape and eventually cover the whole center with tape and paper. I taped over the paper since it would get wet later.
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/lateral%20g/DSC01286.jpg

Next: pull off the original tape and you have the center nicely masked.
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/lateral%20g/DSC01287.jpg

You need to use a glass cleaner without ammonia in it, and clean it good, make sure you get the residue the blue fine line tape left behind. Good lighting helps.
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/lateral%20g/DSC01290.jpg

Etching Creme or paste. I got this at a craft supply store, there are probably other brands out there..
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/lateral%20g/DSC01291.jpg

Brush on and let set per directions. I brushed it in one direction and went back around and brushed opposite direction. Try not to brush into or under the tape. The radius edges will want to come up, so make sure they are all pressed down good!
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/lateral%20g/DSC01292.jpg

Wipe off with water and wet rag and clean again with glass cleaner really well.

Here is the primer I used....You can call any auto glass installer and ask for black primer.
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/lateral%20g/DSC01296.jpg

Mixed 1/1 with acetone.
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/lateral%20g/DSC01297.jpg

Go back and make sure your corners are down, one came up and I had to fix it. You can see the difference in the clean and etched areas.
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/lateral%20g/DSC01298.jpg

Tack off
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/lateral%20g/DSC01299.jpg

Spray on in 2-3 coats with a couple minutes in between.
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/lateral%20g/DSC01300.jpg

Use heat gun to dry last coat.
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/lateral%20g/DSC01301.jpg

Peel off tape. Make sure you don't have any rogue etch creme on the stand or on any rags when you take off the back paper. Wipe edges good first and clean back side right away with water just to make sure. I highly recommend having a second stand that is clean and use that to set the window on after you take the tape off, just to be safe.

Scuff with red scotch brite pad. Then I shot with ppg Dp90 black epoxy primer and then look over after dried for dust nibs and such. If it sat for more than 24 hours I scuffed with grey scotch brite and then tacked off. I used SEM trim black. You can get this in spray cans but it will not look as good. I got it in a quart from my paint supply store and mixed it with centari reducer. Any good quality laquer thinner will also work or you can hunt down the SEM reducer recommended on the can. I also wanted to say that soon the plug will be finished for the front and we will be making the mold. I say we cause I have help in the final stages of this from a very experienced fiber glass mold maker, Terry Delong. Google him and you will see his work all over. He has built multiple sema vehicles and even made the body kit that is on Sammy Hagars red rocket mustang. He helped me get ready for the show this weekend, was there until 3 am friday morning, awesome guy. So I know this front end will turn out just right.

oh yeah, funny thing, well not really, We only had to move the car accross the street to the show, here was the rundown of my day friday. Worked until 4:30 am in the morning, slept for 2 hours, had 3 hours of sleep each night on average last week, anyway....got to the shop to put the windows in the doors only to find that I didn't have the window track for the passenger quarter window, it was at my home shop. Decided to forget it,..Running late...got the windows in, fenders on and hood on, then front end...when we were rolling it on to the car dolly I was straightening the wheel as it was being pushed, forgot about the fender to tire clearance and just about lost my hand... still swollen and numb....then the dolly wouldn't swivel right and when we turned it, the fender of the dolly nailed the door on passenger side and dented it. (notice I have no passenger side pics....) I have a friend who does paintless dent repair, so no problem. We decided to load it on my trailer....pushed it up and the front subframe got stuck on the tailer, everytime we loaded it or unloaded it. OH yeah tents. We put up two 12 x 12 tents the night before, they were both destroyed that night by high winds. We managed to get one good one out of the two and bought another. When we got the car there the wind picked up again and ripped one leg off its welded base and almost demolished the car, thankfully someone was there to grab the supports. We took the tents down and then my very expensive full color banner got ripped up.....I called my brother who was coming to see the car for the first time and said " bring some turkey". He showed up handed me some cash for the 20 hour day I just put in, and a bottle of 101. All is well that ends well.

Ok, haven't posted for a while...been busy with a new restoration project. I have some updates and a tip that may be new to some. My friend told me about it and it works great....Liquid Guide coat. There are many different ways to guide coat panels but the spray methods are most popular, there are also the dust on kinds. I have tried them and this is by far the cheapest and best method. Simply take acetone and pour some dark colored basecoat toner in the can, not much. just a little to color it. Then shake it up. Pour on a microfiber cloth and stain away. the acetone evaporates too quickly to hurt hardened 2k primers and epoxy, I don't know that I would try it over self etch or spray bomb primers that aren't harded. This goes on like stain and gets into the areas a spray mist can't. It will show up very small sand scratches left over that spray and dust methods won't. Since it is a liquid it get into every pore. I highly recommend it for cost and worth. Here are some pics.

Ok, here is the latest...We have been hard at work getting wiring all figured out. Decided not to use painless and go with factory wiring and computer. Have it all ran and ready for power. Ignition all all that is done, shortened and removed all unwanted wires and repinned the computer connectors accordingly. We have to have the computers flashed and soon we will be ready to start it up. My brother decided to change the cam, rockers, intake and have the heads ported. (of course after I painted everything) We had a guy that does it for Lingenfelter do it and it should have awesome flow, he cleaned up the intake as well inside. The flow numbers are 317 at 600 lift? max. whatever that means, I am not an engine guy, but my brother said that is awesome.
The cam is a comp cam 54-444-11:

Cam Style Hydraulic roller tappet

The fuel rails came adonized red, so we made a bath of lye and water and stripped them, then I polished them out to match the covers. I got the intake based on looks more than performance. These were the coolest covers I have seen and they only go with this fuel rail and intake so....I wanted the only shiney bits on the car to be the top of the engine, everything else will be black or silver. I still need to do something with the throttle body and we will be getting a billet oil cap too.
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/1969FireBirdzingercustoms12.jpg

I used this cool carbon fiber vinyl to cover the instrument panel. It actually has texture to it. I Stripped off the wood grain and the silver outlines and applied it. I Also cut out some pieces for the fuel rail covers that say "Rare Breed" for the top shelf 101 proof Wild Turkey the car is named after, and since Pontiac is now a rare breed....
The console will go up in front of the area all cut up for the radio and air controls, We have a vintage air magnum kit and billet controls.

The power brake booster is a hydra unit out of an 99 astro van and we got the SSBC billet master cylinder with the built in distribution. The top matches the fuel rail covers. Sorry I didn't snap a pic with the tape off. We hid the computer like so....

And then the first piece goes on and we will be figuring out fitment and how to mount it...after that, I will make some to sell. I will keep the updates coming as we progress. I would really like to have this at the good guy Columbus show. we will see.

some updates: We got our radiator, had to mod it a bit to mount and work with what we have, Also not pictured, we modified the gas tank.
We installed the parking brake cable, modified the mounts on the frame so we can use all stock parts and they work with the cady calipers.

Also, I started on the interior...the seats are out of a 2001 camaro. Funny thing was the rear seat wasn't working out the way I hoped cause of the detroit speed 4 link bar mounts, I was planning on using the bottoms of the 01 camaro but they are just foam...anyway, my brother was turning his junker in for scrap and I had a last minute thought to check his back seat. Crazy thing that this 87 honda civic could have almost the exact measurement across the rear seat as the Firebird....like an inch shorter, 1/2 inch on each side, actually perfect..and the height sitting on the link pockets was perfect with the back tray....Also since I have to move the seat forward to clear the 4 link pockets I grabbed the wheel well covers out of the honda and cut the part I needed out. We cut the seat in half and shortened each half by 5 inches to make two seats with room for a waterfall console in the middle, we can use the foam, just cut the middle out and they both fold down leaving room behind for our amps to mount. I also really like the look of the headrests. anyway the pics tell the story.

Small update for now, just finished the tail pipe section, it will get black ceramic powder coat like the headers.... we used oval pipe with x-pipe and spintech mufflers. we cut out the gas tank for the pipes to go where I wanted them to...crazy its been like 5 years since I designed this part in my head and it turned out just the way I wanted it to. I have to clean up the welds but you actually won't see them. I am making a two piece heat shield out of aluminum that goes up between the tank and pipes and then under with a nice water jet finish piece with a vented look that will be an extra detail for the rear view of the car. The heat shield and the ceramic coat should keep the exhaust pretty cool to the tank. Also only the middle two pipes are actually functioning as tail pipes, I welded nice curved baffles in right where they attach to keep them seperated and the flow smooth. That way the outside pipes won't blacken the yellow too much.

Headlamps start with a Jetta JDM lamp assembly, add one saw and some fiberglass resin, wool and mdf and you have a start...., I will be using all the bulbs and halos out of them.
I just cut the parts out that I wanted to use and placed them on the mdf board and then set them in place and stretched wool fabric and wet it down with resin then alot of sanding and high build primer to get smooth.

Its been a while. I have had some other projects to finish up, I just can't pay the bills working on the firebird, really stinks....I have a lot of things kinda going with it and just wanted to update the forum.

We made our own interior panels for the rear quarter area, as well as our own door panels based off the stock delux but altered a little to clear the ride tech tiger cage we installed. Also has a little more detail and a speaker hole. We made molds and that is what you see pictured, I haven't built a part yet, that is up next. I did build the rear molds and pulled some nice parts off them. Thanks to Terry for all the help in teaching me and helping with the molds and parts.
The center console is its own crazy build, some parts will be painted and others wrapped. I am building a vacuum forming table that if it works right will allow me to do dash repairs and such, but for this I am covering the door panels and rear panels in a near match to the new camaro door vinyl. it should add a nice modern look. The top of the console you see in the pictures is all mocked up and filled for a mold we made to make a quick light weight part.

Just to update, really hard at in now on the bird. Just finishing up another bird, ford tbird.
Working on headlights:
Pulled our first good parts. The halo parts fit right in place as well as turn signal lens.
It will have a lexan front after installed.
I am trying to decide if I should paint the inside of the headlight body color like corvettes or flat black. What do you think? The rings will look much bigger after they are painted chrome regardless of what color I paint the rest.

Yeah, this isn't so bad as doing the high end paint work we do. This is a project that has kept me busy all year.... My arm feels like it is gonna fall off but the result is really flat and really shiny.....here is a pic looking down the door and showing the split reflection of the front of the tbird. you can see the door end in the foreground.

well I paid for two spots at the detroit autorama, crunch time....I feel pretty good about being done for the most part with "wild turkey", just having it sit with doors shut, windows up and trunk shut in worst case. I have another project I have been messing with, a chopper, thought I would post pics.. it get the other spot there at autorama....
just sprayed some final clean on for shine, really pops, pictures don't show it well but it is coming along. I call it "Blood Dragon"

Ok, so working on the closeout panel. first part, just getting it fit and finished for paint. Also Headlights are done and ready to break down and paint. Hood Painted tonight. Making inset for door panels and rear panels. will be black suede, used metal door clips and epoxy to hold them, then will coat over the top with a little filler, sand and wrap. The steering wheel is coming along. I made mold off an old pontiac emblem and cast it in a resin/glassbead mix. We machined some parts to make the quick release wheel mount like a normal one. Aluminum pieces will be painted. Also a shot of a piece of carpet, that is bound and all the carpet is done and ready to go. Just have to finish and paint the nose and keep plugging away.

I drew that up and had it cut on a plasma table and then welded in the gas cap and bent it up to the angles needed. water jet would be better. I have the front grills getting machined right now to match. If you have exact measurements for the parts you want I could draw up a file for them to go off and have cut. let me know.

So progress last couple days is wiring and more wiring....all the guages and the headlights, fog lights. As for the doors the panels are fit and all the speakers pre fit and ready to sand and paint. We are using all Infinity speakers with the exception of to JL audio subs. working on getting nose ready for paint. 90% there. also working on the chopper.
The instrument panel is almost ready to install I used the bird blank for the ac controls, worked great, also molded in a digital gas gauge under that. The guages are all Pro Sport brand, like the look of them. especially when lit up. they all do a sweep when you start the car and blink two different colors and are programable. The speedo and tac fit so perfectly in the dash panel.

I sprayed the pass side dash black with the soft touch to match the rest. I had to make my own glove box insert, since the vintage air took up some room. Just made it out of fiberglass. Also I'm not sure if I mentioned we put a tilt wheel in with newer wiper controls. We are using the same motor for controls as in the newer models.

We made some quick glass pieces to close off and have something for carpet to lay on and hide all the wiring and on the driver side we put the check engine light. They will get cleaned up and sprayed black. They flow right into the console. As for the door opening peices we made to cover the wiring and make a smooth transition for carpet, they will also enable the carpet to lay over the Ride Tech Tiger cage mounts so you will only see the bar and door bar bolt down to the carpet. Also got the dash wrapped to match the seats.

Thanks. Today was all about getting the instrument dash pad and center console in and hook up all the gauges. surprisingly the main problem area is getting the touch screen radio to fit. I had it in just fine until I hooked up the rca's. the defrost outlet is right in the way. I am getting 90° adapters tomorrow. I can't wait to show the finished heat shield for the exhaust... Turned out great. I had the tail pipe section and shield ceramic coated to cut down on the heat even more around the gas tank. On a side note that soft touch clear is nice but really delicate. I am having second thoughts on the using it on the door panels. I wish I had gotten my vac table finished in time to wrap them... Just maybe after the show.

I have an overall picture of what I want,...I have from the beginning been trying to put supercar influences into the design....I love lambos, ferrari and other imports that are full of color and style. the rear represents some cues from lambos with the exhaust and honeycomb etc. the front nose is inspired by this
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/zingercustoms/gtr.jpg
and you will really see this come out as the build progresses. The interior was influenced by a ferrari interior and a little by lambo. I designed the stripes several years back and finally got them on and I will show that when the car comes together more. just a little different racing stripe. kinda hard to get until it is done. I know this style isn't for everybody but there is a method to my madness. It is a firebird afterall....called wild turkey. I have just had so many restorations breaking up my time that it has come slowly, can't believe it will be done soon......THanks for all the imput and honest opinions

Heres some more pics, front end, still gets lexan with black 1/2 ring painted on the lexan. black grill and some stripes on the bottom, and the fog light area will be blacked out as well with smoked fog lights. The grill is for the nose, just got them back from the machine shop and fit to front end.

here are some pics of interior coming together...been working around the clock, getting my wing done now. the shifter was all redone to remove b&m logo and customize with interior, The center console I built came out great, it is comprised of 9 hand made pieces not counting the lids. we made everything except the rings for the cup holders everything works, fits as planned. rear seats roll cage hoop are next and then the door panels and front seats. we have a suede headliner and all the amps are in. We have a custom sub box and trunk enclosure in process. the rear panels are figerglass, coated in soft touch clear and have suede inserts and leather arm pads. we have 2 1600watt infinity amps (one for each 10" woofer)and one 1200 4 way for the 6x9 infinities and the 6 inch woofer/mid and tweeter in the doors.

well, I had a great night last night finally after all this time gettin my car together, shared some great moments with some good friends working late and just seeing it all come together....and then one of the worst moments......I was backing the car up into the booth the touch up some stuff, all we needed was touch up, front seats in and some minor things and we were ready to head out at noon. I put the car in reverse as I have many times and backed into the booth...then put it into drive to straighten out....had my budy watching for me next to the car cause it was all masked off....i snuck forward and then the brake pedal dropped to the floor, i tried to get to park but the shifter is a ratchet style b&m and rather clumsy to shift from 1st to park, I had only seconds and it happened. Directly in front of me was my recently finished restored 1957 Tbird. I slammed it on the passenger side bumper/fender....just had the bumper $2000 chrome job done. THe front seats actually save rear of the tbird becuase it slammed into them and it didn't contact my garage door at all, just about shoved the driver seat throught the door tho.....actually the seat is fine, just poofed back up. Well the pictures tell the rest of the story....needless to say I am glad no one got hurt.....not sure what happened yet, just lost all pressure........worst day ever, still going to detroit tomorrow with a big bandaid on the car....won't let it beat me.....lots of cool stuff to look at still.

well we one 1st place in chopper category and Outstanding paint for all bike categories at the autorama.....car will be there next year for sure...met with adjuster today, seemed like an understanding car guy, he has done some of his own restorations so hopefully they don't cut my estimate down too much. we will see.

Update: I got with the adjuster, he let me write my own estimate to repair myself and then didn't argue with one single minute of labor...amazing. They did knock my hourly rate down, but I expected that...I get a check for each car minus my $500 deductable in full sometime next week. wow!!!! worked out so smoothly, selective insurance is awesome.

Just waiting on the bumper to get back from chrome. Then put the fire bird together to be ready for good guys Columbus. Thanks

Well I tried real hard to make it to the good guys in Columbus....I kinda was unbalanced in my expectations and in the fact that I didn't leave my shop from Wednesday morning until Saturday at 12:30 pm. I did the math and realized I went 77 hours on one hour of sleep at about 48 hours into it....my wife is still mad as well as my mom..lol...I did try to get there Saturday and my friends truck broke down on way so o didn't get there till Sunday morn...I will post pics later I did have ride tech weigh my car and was surprised by the numbers....total weight was 3720...49.5% up front and 50.5% in rear...pretty good. More updates later..at Columbus zoo with family.

well here are some pics...I decided to make the ram air functional...so...it looks pretty good..the part on the car is a pattern, I will be making it nicer and making a mold for it. It has an upper part that closes down and seals to the lower....I have a few adjustments in gaps to make that I didn't have time or energy to get perfect. the wing has a third brake light in it under the yellow paint that lights up red.

THe stripes are actually really difficult to get right. they are an optical allusion. I originally made them with a 3/4 inch gap all the way through the s-curve...but it looked like crap from behind or in front of the car...so I ended up figuring out that you have to make the ends sweep gradually to a inch more on each end and when you walk around the car the stripes change according to your point of perspective and look exactly 3/4 of an inch all the way when standing at the front or back of the car.....weird.

I have a mold for the wing... my idea was that the car looked good at certain angles with a wing and not so cool at others...the ends mimic the tops of the quarters where they swoop up and the middle goes with the over all shape of the rear end with the bumper and heat shield all caring a commen shape.

Thanks...it is really tough to know what to do without too much...my style is a little close. I know that but I worked with what I had and really enjoy making pieces that add to the look and add details. I am happy I went with my bros color choice..if I had my way originally it would still be a brighter color blue. I like color. Lots of silver or charcoal cars out there.
Oh yeah. How do I get in the lateral g car of the month runnings?

Nice car, you do great fiberglass work.... Question, how did you bolt the front of your door bars to the floor. any pictures?

zingercustoms
