View Full Version : Switched to Corsa mufflers
Well, Frank at Prodigy was right, I didn't like the Spintech mufflers. The interior resonance was way too much. I yanked them out this weekend and installed a set of the new Corsa dB mufflers. The car sounds amazing, has a great sound at idle, no interior resonance at any speed, and they sound wicked at WOT. I'll get some hole shot, WOT, and fly-by video soon. :D
Here's what it sounds like at idle:

Let me out! Make it stop! I give! I will tell you anything! Here, take my watch! Just please turn it off!
Corsa on the other hand is very much a Gentlemans hot rod sound. Your to classy a guy for those Spintechs.
Good move.
And BTW, I understand your going to have some really cool seat belts soon as I got notice they shipped!

That sounds awesome Scott!! I've been wondering about those mufflers for my car. Do you happen to know the dimensions on them? And how would you compare them to the Flowmasters?

Awesome! Thanks Frank!

I dont have a lot of 'before' videos with the spintechs. Most of them were taken inside the garage so it echoes more than out on the driveway. But here's that little test drive video from last summer:
Test Drive with Spintechs (http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/LS7_test_drive.wmv)

They are the Red Series.

The case size is 15" x 10" x 4" and the overall length is 18.5".
As for comparing them to Flowmasters or the Spintechs... they have more treble at idle. The spintechs were all bass, like a Flowmaster, but without the tinny, ringing traditional Flowmaster sound.
The Spintechs had a lot of drone at road speed. I think the Spintechs would make an awesome pro-street muffler. They thump really hard and sound like they were made for a high compression big block. Extremely throaty, but just not road friendly.
The Corsas on the other hand, have a more treble sound at idle but still have a deep sound. Hard to explain I guess. They don't pound the ground but still have a deep sound. Rolling around town and cruising down the highway, they are pretty quiet. They seem to actually get a bit quieter at road speed. But what I really love about them is that once you stand on it, they just scream... they have the 'Corsa' sound at WOT and are pretty loud. It reminds me a lot of a certain ProCharged C6ZO6 at WOT (http://www.lateral-g.net/temp/ProCharged_C6_ZO6.wmv). It doesn't surprise me that they scream at WOT, when you hold the muffler up, you can look straight through it. I have to believe that they flow a lot more than the Spintech's that I took off.
I'll try to get some video of the car at WOT soon. The weather here has been really crappy.
Test Drive with Spintechs
It is tough to tell the difference on the two tapes, but I noticed in this vid that you have a serious lip going into your driveway huh? That causing any issues now that the front clip is on? Put down some board to drive up a bit smoother?
And just wait until your son turns 16 and wants the keys to impress a date??? ;)
Thanks for the info...I really like the sound of them. I think them or some Borla XR1's will be my next muffler.
Sounds good.
Too bad they don't list a 3" size since I already have the pipes. :(

From the sounds of your camera man talking and the looks of your co-pilot in the test drive video I'm wondering about your build team. Those kids do pretty good work. :D

That thing sounds badass with both mufflers, I would have to say the louder flowmaster type drone is quite annoying when driving. I think you'll be much happier with the Corsa's if they are any similar to a Magnaflow which scream at WOT.
I think we need burnout video's to make a final conclusion :unibrow:
BTW Scott, what are the specs on that cam?
Sounds good.

I'm running the 2.5" mufflers. I was concerned about that, but after several calls to Corsa, they assured me that 600hp would be no problem because of the straight-through design. It's pretty cool how you can look straight through them. Comparing that design to the cut-away of a spintech, I have to believe that while the piping is smaller, they flow more/have less restriction than a 3" spintech. I'm using a Flowmaster reducer that makes the 3" to 2.5" reduction over 6", so it's a real gradual taper.
Corsa has offered to take one of my Spintech's and put it on their flow bench, maybe I should take them up on that. Could be pretty interesting!
Thanks for the info. I'd like to see a comparison too.

Thanks a bunch for the comparison. My last motor had low enough compression I got none of the tinny sound that Flowmasters are known for. The fact that I had it all going through a single cat kinda killed the resonance as well. I'm going slightly different with my new motor, with higher compression and two different exhausts, and I may try comparing mufflers now. I know Spintechs are almost obnoxiously loud, but I'm still not the biggest fan of Magnaflow for some reason. I'm also considering some Dynomax ultraflow mufflers.

I cant believe how expensive those Corsa muffler are....almost $500 for 2! I think I will stick to some Ultraflows.....:(
I paid $199 each through Jegs. Not cheap, but they are all stainless and look as good as they sound.

Scott,
Glad to see your car back on the road. Mufflers sound great. I now know what muffler to replace my Flow Delta 40's.
$400 for a set of stainless mufflers is not a bad price with today's metal prices going up every other minute. (ex. 1/2" EMT conduit was $1.89 per 10ft, 3 weeks ago. Today its $2.07 a stick)

Motor sounds real crisp in both vids Scott,I love the sound in each but I can tell what you mean about them being more on the trembly side. Can't wait for some WOT vids next...
I've always been a Flowmaster guy and run the new Super 44's on both Z/28's and just love them when I open 'em up.I never drive with any passengers nor do I have any music in either car (except for the engine:unibrow:) so I love the drone and I love the resonance...just love it.:woot:
Carry on man...your car is beautiful.

Any new video?
We're sitting at the edge of our seats!
Thanks
The only new video I have is the chassis dyno video (http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/chassis_dyno.wmv).
I've been meaning to get some more interesting video, but haven't had a chance. Yet. :D

I know this is ancient thread but I would love to see a new video. The old ones don't work. Im in the market for new exhaust for my 69. Curious how you routed the exhaust.
Thank you, Ray

Ray, you might be better off making a new thread in the lower section specific forums asking for suggestions and examples. There have been a few new mufflers available since this thread. Black Widow is an example. I'm honestly not sure Corsa is still doing their db mufflers any more.

Oddly, I have Spintech and love the sound. I get quite a few compliments. I'm not experiencing the resonance you were though.
