Looks like a fun event. Kind of a short track though. I was surprised to see Liz in the #13 Camaro with a faster time than Rupp.

Liz's fastest time was 18.41 ... my fastest time was 18.31...
Take that sucka! Oh, and she was on sticky tires.. So, I win :woot:
But, she is most likely a better driver, she does it more while I'm sitting on my ass writing stories..
Low 17s were considered VERY good times for the musclecars.. Air Ride cars and the DSE Camaro were in that area. The CPP Nova (yellow one) and Penny were in the mid 17s.. The Air Ride guys were very helpful with ways I can tune my suspension.
Oh, the BFG tires I put on performed very well.. I was surprised how grippy they were.
Random shot of me wheeling the car:

We need some info and pics on the Yellow CPP Nova
It's owned by CPP.
There's a story on it in the new Nova Classics magazine (on newsstands).. Has a TCI front sub and rear system. Big Wilwood brakes, etc. Nice car and it handles well, they have been busy tuning the heck out of the suspension and are really getting it dialed in.

Why the tire change?

Why the tire change?
No R-compound tires allowed for the Editors Challenge, so BFG sent me over a sweet set of KDWs.. nice tires!

Wow that is rediculiousley small. I guess I'm sopiled up here we run a 80 - 100 second auto-x and you reach 60 - 70 mph.

Steve, did you have any push? Looked like it in a couple shots. I am amazed at how flat the Air Ride cars were going through the course. Thanks for posting.

Mike
Yea, some push. Mostly because my front tires are too narrow (compared to the rears). But the suspension was very compliant and it let the rears force the front through the turn.
My rims will soon be 18x10 and I have some 275s to put on.. maybe 285s.. That should help.
I also need to tweak my spring rates and bar. She will get there, even at this stage Penny is pretty competative. I hope to improve on her over the summer.

sweet vid steve!!!!!
it does look like you need to stiffen up the front springs though...it looked good through the corners but it woulnt hurt to be a bit more level.

I agree.. 450s in there now.. thinking 525.
On Sunday the Air Ride guys upped the comp and rebound which make the car much better. Even with the body leaned over the tires stayed on the pavement, I'm sure most of that reason is the no-bind deal with the three link.
More front tire will help also.

Would raising the watts link up one notch help w/body roll? What about a rear swaybar? I have the LD 3-link on my 69 Camaro as well (not running yet) and I'm debating on installing a rear bar. I shot Mark an email awhile ago inquiring about a rear bar for his set up and haven't gotten a response yet. Do you know if there is a rear bar assembly that will work w/3-link?
Thanks..

More front tire will help also.do you have a adjustable splined type front sway bar? so you could bmake the bar rate harder? cause i seen car perform great with the whole soft spring/big bar set-up.
didnt you go down in spring rate after the accident?
im installing 700# in my car right now... but then again ive got a iron block sbc...

Nice cars out there and great job Steve. I wish I could have gone. That is a lame autocross track though. I take it, it was not a N.A.S.A or a S.C.C.A track? More of a weekend proving ground? Still cool to see all those muscle cars on the track. Come up on the 3rd weekend of May to the Duel at DeAnza.

So it's becoming true the 18x12 are too big for the rears, smaller rims here I come,

It's always been true.. and they are not TOO big.. the front 255s are too small. Oh, and we are building cool street cars.. not race cars :)
Lots of fast cars running 335/275 though.. It also has a lot to do with chassis set-up.

Nicely done Steve! Congrats on the event!
do you have a adjustable splined type front sway bar? so you could bmake the bar rate harder? cause i seen car perform great with the whole soft spring/big bar set-up.For a car that pushes, you want a softer front bar, or a stiffer rear bar. And Steve's right: not enough front tire. It's always the limiting factor on our cars.

I'm done changing my car, for now I'm staying with the stock front sub, I'm more into finishing the car than tearing it apart for a change,
I'm limited to a 18x8.5 with a 245 or a 255,

A rear bar would make a huge difference for the better on that car.

Air ride ran it well. It was popular with fans. There are a million more safety issues with higher speeds and the fans would not be as close to the action. After all it is a car show by nature, not a race. Sure added to the show. The whole track was easily visible by the spectators, which made it fun. I'm sure the vendors in the PT arena are loving($) it. Good time to be selling parts and services, IMO.

Yep... this was a car show, not a track day. HUNDREDS of spectators got a taste of the action and because of the design we were able to give rides to those people in attendance.
I can't tell you how many cute girls hopped into Penny for a lap or two. This was GREAT for our hobby since a bunch of people at a "car show" got exposed to cool cars getting used instead of parked in a static display.
Also, because of the track helmets weren't required which meant that anyone could take thier car around the track and again, it made it possible to take riders.
A S.C.C.A guy was there teching the cars and I'm sure he helped lay out the track. It was a blast to drive and sure beat standing around all day with a polish rag.

I had no idea that it was a car show. Well that's cool that a car show had some kind of track. They sure don't do that around here. :(

hey Steve1968ls2, any answers to my questions a few pages back regarding raising bellcrank on the watts or rear bar availability to minimize body roll?
Not yet, I'm certainly not a Watt's expert. But, raising the bellcrank should change the CG and help limit body roll. To what degree I'm not sure.
Some thought my front was too soft and it rolling over was forcing the back over. Still, even with the body roll the tires stayed on the pavement, thus my good times.
That's cool that they do that now. So when are you coming up? :unibrow:
Swampped this month.. but soon :D

Steve didn't you go to a 450# front spring? That's 100# lighter than what I have, and was recommended to start with...your thoughts? Course I have an iron block and stock SF....
