RIP, exactly as said before, love him or hate him, he did a lot for the hot rod industry. Look at how many of todays hot builders, designers, wheel manufacturers that all spawned from the Boyd camp.... Alan Budnik, Chip Foose, and countless others intertwined in the industry...

As said before - Like him or not he did do so much for this industry. He gave opportunity and jump started alot of careers for many leading people in this industry today. Some of his ways have been questioned in the past and other than making more $$ American Hotrod didn't do him any favors IMO, but I would never wish ill will on anybody. RIP Boyd and thoughts are with your family.

I just heard that we lost another pioneer in Hot Rodding last night. Lil" John Buttera passed away from a brain tumor. Some may of never heard of him but he was well known on the West Coast. Did alot of work with Boyd in his early days.

We have lost a legend. Many got sucked into the TV persona and were not big fans. For me, I had huge respect for the cars he built / managed. Simply a hero car builder in my eyes. A lot of us have a lot to learn before we catch up with things he was doing 20 years ago! The man built some cars!

RIP Boyd!

Wow two more pioneers are gone.... I had an experience meeting Boyd in the late 80's. I had just graduated high school and my high school sweetheart moved to California. We were together for a while so I saved up my money and went to see her. Of course I took her to all the hotrod shops. I was building a 27 Ford drag racer and was searching for just the right taillites. We stumbled on Boyds shop and he spent several hours with us. We talked about my car and he showed us some of his builds. He took us all through the main shop even out back in the storage are to show us builds that were in progress but pushed aside for whatever reason. He was nothing like the TV portrays him. I enjoyed the few hours I got to spend with him sharing our passion for cars.

RIP Boyd and John.....

John Buttera was a big influence on me when I was younger. There are a few of his cars that I still lust after. A Hilborn injected '69 Z/28 that he and his son built in about 1980 and a '65(?) Nova with C4 suspension - he built that in about 1986! It would fit in well with today's cars.

Lil John was the first guy I remember reading about who really explained "why" cool cars looked cool. The right rake, the right tire size. How subtle mods could accentuate already beautiful cars.

Boyd, Chip and Troy all created my love for hot rods but Boyd was the first. If not for drooling over his early creations as a kid in Hot Rod and other magazines I might not have the disease that is cars. He was truly an artist. Chezoom could come out tomorrow and still be cutting edge with a new set of wheels, how many years ago did he make that? God's gonna have one killer set of wheels. RIP

Well first of all I apologize to the Buttera family. I'm glad to say I now know these were just rumors flying around and John is still hanging in there. I had heard this from a what I thought was a close source. Lil' John is true legend in Hot Rodding and Drag Racing. Without guys like him we would not be where we are today. Once again sorry about the mis-information and RIP Boyd.

Nice write up on Boyd I found on another site..

If its really true that he was nothing like his persona on TV, its a shame that it will be the way most people think and remember him.

It really hit home when i was in my garage today, looking at my wheels and thinking we probably would still be rocking 15 in cragars if it wasnt for him,not saying the man just means a set of wheels, but the magnitude of what he did for the industry. We lost one of the greats

Back when Boyd started the shop he had a bunch of our hero's working with him at the time. Can you imagine how cool it would have been to be working with that crew at the time ? Lil' John back in the machine shop smoking like a fiend and cursing at anything that moved - Boyd's laugh and silly shirts - Chips designs - Jesse James - what a blast that must have been huh ! Yeah, I'm sure there were bad times, fights, and bust business deals - but aren't there always bad times. Remember the good stuff.

Thanks for all the projects - billet stuff - and guidance/support of an industry we all love ! RIP
