Well I started a thread last year about my Chevelle project and was making pretty good progress with the car all painted and ready to reassemble.

Here are some pics of it just after paint
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i284/7TSS/th_SS172.jpg (http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i284/7TSS/SS172.jpg) http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i284/7TSS/th_SS170.jpg (http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i284/7TSS/SS170.jpg)

Then I had a change of heart and decided to paint it black which is what I wanted from the start. Lesson learned: Don't let others talk you out of what you really want.

I contacted Carter Hickman about rendering the car again and this is what I'm shooting for

Now I'm back to sanding her down to get ready for another round of paint.

Here are a few of the rolling chassis. Still have to run the brake and fuel lines as well as mount the rear shocks.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i284/7TSS/th_SS209.jpg (http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i284/7TSS/SS209.jpg)http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i284/7TSS/th_SS214.jpg (http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i284/7TSS/SS214.jpg)

I didn't box the frame as this is an original LS-6 Chevelle w/ build sheet. Even though it's not a numbers matching engine I didn't want to do anything permanent. Later, if I can find another frame I'd like to box and strengthen it and swap it in.

Thanks for looking

Goodwin

Man I would give my left nut to have a 70 convertible. My favorite Chevelle EVER. Nice paint work.

The red came out pretty good but too bad it'll be coming off to make way for some black. LOL :willy:

Word of warning...

It appears you are running Global West CNR-42 upper arms (originally intended for B-body spindles) and what I'm guessing are ATS "tall" spindles.

Just a warning... you may be in for a surprise at the alignment shop with that combo. Mark from SC&C and I were just working on this very problem (I'm changing from B-body spindles to ATS tall spindles, I already have the GW upper & lower arms on the car with B-spindles currently) and even with no shims the least negative camber I would be able to achieve with the GW CNR-42 upper arms is -2.2 degrees. The ATS spindles have 2 degrees less KPI than the B-body spindles-- thus the moment you bolt the ATS spindles on you now have 2 degrees more negative camber than the B-body spindles. The GW CNR-42 upper arms are sized so that with B-body spindles, no cross shaft shims, and an in-spec frame you'll get about 0 degrees of camber. So once you swap out to the ATS spindles you are looking at a nominal -2 degrees camber with the CNR-42 upper arms with no shims!

GW even states on their webpage that the CNR-42 "negative roll" (B-body) upper arms can't be used with ATS tall spindles... and this is because the change in KPI between the spindles makes the arm too short and results in too much negative camber. You're simply out of adjustment.

You might want to think about alternatives now while you have an easy to work with rolling frame. GW says their standard length upper arms will work (they're longer and thus give you more camber adjustment range with the ATS spindles) as would SPC adjustable uppers (which is what I'm changing to... no more shims and a much larger possible adjustment range.)

Car/rendering looks good too!

I wish you luck on keeping it clean. I'd love to paint my car black too but I've come to the realization I don't want the maintenance or upkeep associated with keeping it looking really nice... so I'll probably go with "hide the dust" silver.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Blown353,

Thanks for the advice. Yesterday as I was finishing up the install of the front suspension, I noticed that there was a lot of negative camber without any shims. I was going to call GW and/or Tyler to ask about it. Now I have my answer.

I wanted to use the SPC arms but since I already powdercoated my frame I didn't want to chance needing to cut the gussets for the cross-shaft mounts. I guess that leaves the GW stock spindle replacement to match their lowers as the next alternative. Any other brands you'd recommend?

Goodwin,

You car is gonna be nice:thumbsup:
X2 on Blown353 comments. And further more I started with the GW stock spindle uca's. On my car (69 Chevelle) I still had a problem with the gussets hitting the front part of the arm. GW said they would fit with out any cut, but that was not the case for me. I don't blame you for not wanting to cut an LS6 car, but it is not really that bad. I opted to change to SPC's. In picture below you can see where I cut. I also just got the new lower SPC's and waiting for Varishock coil overs to arrive next week before I install them. You might want to also talk with Marcus or ATS about the baer trackers as Tyler said they would have an ill effect for our front steer cars. I am a nobody to give advice rather just passing on what I have been told. I look forward to seeing updates on your build. IMO the GW's lower's look nicer than the SPC lower however I took Marcus's advice that the SPC's were better from his testing.

Thanks Tom. I guess I'll give Marcus a call tomorrow.

Btw, got any more updated pics of your project?

rendering. Can't go wrong with black...the red looked nice as well.

14 years ago when I was restoring my car for the first time and I was newly married, I wanted to paint my car yellow. My new wife said red, red it was. I did that trying to get her involved. She never has liked the car, so when I did it again it was done in yellow.

You're the man taking a freshly painted car and changing the color!

Pesonally... after dinking with shims for years I'm really looking forward to the SPC arms so that's what I would change to. :)

Even if the frame is powdercoated I'd mask off all the unaffected areas, do the minor clearancing on the gusset, and then mask & repaint only the affected area. It's such a small area it's unlikely anyone will notice the spot-painting especially if it's a somewhat close match.

Goodwin,

I don't have any current worth posting but maybe soon. I forgot to ask what size rear tire do you have? Looks like Nitto drag radial 305??

Thanks Tom. I guess I'll give Marcus a call tomorrow.

Payton, yup just doing what I really want. It's only time and money. LOL. Too bad I'm a little short on both. It'll take another year but it'll be worth the wait.

Blown, I guess I'll try to see if I can get some paint to match up and get the SPC arms.

Tom, you're right on the rear tires. here's a pic of them mocked on the car.

Started on the re-make.

Here are a couple pics of the red being stripped off. Used razor blades to take most of the red off and then sanded down to the primer for now. I'll strip it all down and epoxy primer it til the painter can take it in.
Wish we had someone that did media blasting in Hawaii.

What size tires and wheels are those?

7TSS
03-22-2008, 02:09 PM
The fronts were 18 x 8 w/ 245/45's and the rears 18 x 9.5 w/ 305/45's.

The tires are being re-used w/ new wheels. The fronts are the same size with the rears going to 10".
