View Full Version : 68 Camaro with 632 BBC and AME front - update

First update.....

Pro-street influenced but toned down a bit to stay street legal...

Am in Australia so lots of stuff to get over from the states and has been slow progress (have had the car over 1 year already)

Put in the AME front clip 2 weeks ago, looks amazing and everyone who has seen it agrees the thing is a work of Art....

Mocked up the engine and trans to get ride heights this week.

632 BBC looks awesome in the front and only have 2 issues (oil pan sits on power rack and dizzy hits firewall), both easily overcome without too much effort (smoothing the firewall anyway and will notch the pan or replace the pan if I can find one).

Car is running 17" rims and 330mm discs all round.

325 x 50 on rear and 245 x 45 front. Front wheel is a bit of an issue as it is damn close to fender edge...so will need to work there.

All in all very pleased with look though, will run 4 inch ground clearance all round without airbags.

Not sure how long ago you purchased your motor, but mine came with an MSD dist. with the separate coil. Maybe if you give world a call they will swap you out.

Frank, you've had more involvement in this car than anyone else.....ever built a car by remote control ?

Thanks for the heads up on World I will call em...I need to see if the Milodon pan will work better also

Chris

Actually I building quite few that way, consulting all over the US and the World right now. glad we can help.

As for the distributor, it is a option for the MSD distributor with World. The HEI you got with your engine is a generic and only has a $60 value. Might as well add a MSD Distributor, 6AL Box and Coil to your list with Lisa. We will take care of you. The MSD is a MUCH better set up anyway. Also, since your a bit across the pond, I would suggest getting a spare cap and rotor JUST so you have them if you need it someday since it is not exactly a parts store item.

I hear it is nice over there, maybe I should bring it in my luggage? I need a vacation. We played with Monkeys in Belize, snorkled with Sharks in the Bahamas', if Lisa could hug a Koala bear, she would be gone in the morning!

Thanks Frank, yeah add the MSD stuff to the list, just invoice me...was going to do something on ignition anyways.

And yeah come on over, I can hook up Lisa with a Koala cuddle, not many places do it but a few do....

Wait till the car is finished though so you can see your handy work....

Latest update. Long update quite a few pics below

Guys working on the Camaro have been flat out. Paint Prep has started.

Front glass is set up for flush fitting. Check out what we have done with the cowl and front guards.

Car will be in high fill next week and flipped over for underside treatment.

are you sure about the scoop coming out from the hood? in my opinion, it looks a bit ricey, at least if it's not using supercharger, is it? overall I like it, and I can't wait to see it finished, I bet the finished product will kick ass

cluxford

Hard to register it in Oz with a blower. Protrusions out the bonnet cannot be more than 16mm (even this is stretching it), so for now it is running dual quad intake with twin 600 edelbrocks.

Once registered, then I will most likely supercharge and fuel inject it.

I still like the look of a dual quad scoop out the bonnet, like it way way better than a 4" cowl.

Couple of updated pics.

Car in primer now.

Off to Trimmer, Auto Electrician and Exhaust for pre-fitting and other pre-paint work.

Paint is now selected PPG Liquid Crystal Vibrance Series. Yellow Pearl

As it sits is it's ride height. 4" clearance. It's damn low.

May put wider meats on the rear, currently 325 x 17 x 45. M&H make a 390 x 40 x 17.

OK some visual updates....

Car was sitting out in the sun today, first time I've seen it outside.

Ride height is too low, chassis is a bee's dick off the ground at about 2 inches, so it will obviously have to come up 2 inches for rego, but I think I will take it back down to 3 inches post rego, cause damn it looks tough that low...question is whether it will clear the shiity road hazards at that height, I strongly suspect it will not !!

No real good shots of the new exhaust as I had trouble even getting my iPhone under the car to snap pics

The rear mufflers will not stay, as mentioned before there are 2 mufflers either side to get it quiet enough for rego, post rego off come the rear 2 and it will be just pipes out the rear

Best pics I could take with iphone under the car

Now the really exciting pics.....

The shop painted up an old falcon guard in the pain we will be painting her...

PPG Vibrance

Oh man I can't tell ya how fricken excited I am, this colour is exactly what I was looking for....

OK to set it up.

The guard has 5 coats of yellow base coat
the rear of the guard has 2 coats of pearl
The front of the guard has 3 coast of pearl
then 2 coats of clear

We will likely run 5 base, 3 pearl, 4 clear, block it, run another 1 or 2 coats of pearl for the "ghost" flames, then more clear

All in all I like it, i love the green and red tinges when the light hits it at different angles, I love the metal flake, and I love the fact that the number of coats actually becomes lighter or darker depending on angle of light. Check out the pics, the front which has 3 coast, is darker than the rear in some shots , and then lighter in other shots at different angles.

Dissapointed we will miss paint before Xmas, just awaiting wheels now before we go to paint...they haven't left the US still being polished as we speak...hopefully they will go out this week

Enjoy...

Who has done the fab work on the car? I am in Aust also, just starting a build on a 67, dse front sub-frame, LS7.

Where are you living. I am in Melb. Shop in Croydon called Stylerod is building it.

Pop over to www.usmuscle.com.au

A whole bunch of Camaro and general US Muscle car freaks in Australia. Pretty much 1st Gen Camaro centric but a nice mix of other cars also.

I love the sound of an LS7, in fact if I didn't want blown BBC a LS7 or LS9 would have been next on my list.

I tossed up a DSE versus AME front end, in the end went with the AME as I really like the fabbed look and suits to build and theme of my car better, with fabbed rear (inc custom 4 link). But I have a bunch of DSE stuff on my car, awesome quality and great bunch of guys.

OK, so the new Rushforth wheels arrived last week. Wasn't quite happy that the old one filled up the guards enough.

Got down to the shop today, they were open (after the Xmas / New year holidays).

Got down there late, but had a chance to fit up one rear rim before they closed.

Remember key goals:
1. Fill up the guards better than the existing 17x12 325's
2. More modern billet wheel

So remove the old. Oh sh1t can't get the new one on, wont squeeze in, hits the wheel arch

Deflate the tyre. Now we can squeeze it in.

Wow, fits perfect, but rubs on the rear of the wheel arch, front of the arch clears by about a quarter inch, rear rubs, and the top clears but by millimetres.

Now we will have to roll the lip front and top. rear will need to cut the wheel arch and shift it back half to three quarters of an inch. But this is exactly the look I am after, a big fat tyre stuff in filling up the whole wheel arch with the guard over the tyre (ala pro-street - but i keep my ability to have back seats)

Either way, I am loving these, damn they are huge even against the old 17x11 325's.

These pics are with it about where it will sit (diff jacked it , its not sitting on stands)

Engine bay almost done. Closeout panel now complete. Moved the oil catch cans due to change in closeout panel

Bumpers now smoothed (bolts welded and shaved) also pulled right into the body

Billet grille now on and in place

Only minor things now like filling holes, smoothing engine bay, etc etc before we go to paint.

Also got a 4" Cowl hood for it so will be registered with the single 1050 Dominator and the 4" Cowl. Then that will come off and the tunnel rammed twin 1000 Race Demons will go on. Blower will follow later

Loving the bars, grille and engine bay

We have PAINT !!!!!

Underside stoneguarded on Mon, and painted last night

Interior painting (ie roof liner, dash, console etc) will be later this week

3 coats of base yellow and 4 of pearl, 3 clear

Interior fluro lights don't do a good job of showing the pearl, it looks fricken awesome, oh and way way brighter and much more yellow than I was expecting, she'll be damn bright when in full yellow...but I am stoked, exactly the colour I wanted...

Dropped in this morning as I had to drive straight past on the way home from the office.

Sorry for the crappy iPhone pics as I wasn't expecting to be down that way today so didn't have my proper camera.

Inside all painted now.

They primed and blocked the primer 4 times to get it baby smooth before painting. Painting it was hard, had to roll it in the rotisserie on it's side and stand between the console and the firewall

Again interior lights don't show the pearl, but damn it's shiny...and it hasn't even been cleared and wet sanded and cleared again yet

In oz, moment you go a cage, then can only be registered as a 2 seater...not what I want.

Can also only legally go weld in 6 point

Our modifications laws here suck, new laws they want to bring in are:
1. No lowering or rising more than between 10mm to 50mm
2. No wider or larger rims
3. and way more....

we are a nanny state !!!

Went down to the shop today....no paint (yet)

So more teaser shots....

Problem with perfectionists....they decided to reblock the whole car again, aiming for paint now early next week...

None the less did get some photos

First lot the ghost flames, they mocked up 6

3 panels 2 lots of flames per panel, I only have photos of one panel

the 2 panels I did not get shots of had a gold and magenta pearl, and a blue and a green pearl flicked into the flames

The 1 panel that I did get a photo of (seen below in 2 different angles) was using just more of the same pearl that is being paid n the car anyway, just more coats.

1 of 5 extra coats and the other of 10 extra coats

In this fist pics the flames at the top are 5 extra coats, at the bottom 10 extra

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/SDC10690.jpg

in this second pic the one on the right hand side is 5 coats, left hand side 10 extra

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/SDC10691.jpg

I'm going with the 5 extra coats. Nice and subtle and Love how it changes colour with the change of angle, it's either red, green or yellow flames

The other pics are just as the car stands while they block it...

Thought some might like to see it with the 4" cowl it will be registered with. The shop trying to talk me into staying with the 4" cowl...but no way, it comes off when the plates go on....

I seriously love the look of these rear treads damn I love the deep dish of these Rushforth's....

I don't mean to be rude, and it's your car, but that's way too much yellow IMHO , it just looks like you got a 55 gallon drum of yellow paint dirt cheap or free and went to town with it.And I'd advise not to go with any flames, makes the car even more tacky.

The fab work looks great, and that motor is a monster:thumbsup:

Appreciate the thoughts, it is a lot of yellow...but that's what I wanted...yellow and polished billet...

It's not your average run of the mill Camaro..

you gotta remember he,s is Australia and i think this type of built is still very much in style there. yeah all the yellow (or whatever color), polished billet and flames are excessive and "tacky" to the types of builds the majority of us are into but when you look at it into comparison to 90s pro-street cars this car invokes all that style and then some! so as far as a pro-street car this car is boss.

Well she finally has paint !!!!

painted yesterday in the oven overnight. Cloudy here today which sucks, but managed to wheel it out into the sun during a break in the clouds.

This has NOT been rubbed back yet, this is as it has come off the gun, so it will be much shinier..

These photos do not do the pearl justice, the reds and greens are hard to see. Greens tend to come out more, but the reds are there also just harder to see

Video at the bottom is better to show it off, but again not as good as seeing it in the flesh.

I have to say I am super happy with this, looks fricken awesome, just the colour I was after...

Oh yeah and in the sun, damn it's bright !!!!

Finally back in the country after being away for a while with work...

But good news is some meaningful updates.

Car was finished today at the trimmers.

Inline with the smooth theme of the car everything leather wrapped with no screws or studs.

Rear seat over the tubs, double stitching to accent and a bit more bolstering than the original seat came out with.

3 point inertia reel belts (all brand spanking new out of a VE commodore) built into rear seats.

Love the door trim, if only I could have also had no door handle....

OK a couple of major milestones...we are moving rapidly to rego.

First up, car was fired up last week for the first time. I was overseas so wasn't here for it, but popped in today and had em fire it up for me.

30 sec video of BBC awesomeness here (turn it up loud):

She won't sit this low when done (as much as I would love it to), at this height the front is about 1 inch from the ground). Looks fricken awesome !!!!

Bumpers and grille in. Note the bumpers are smoothed and tucked way way into the body.

1st decent drive today on trade plates...drove about 10 Ks

Getting ready for engineer tomorrow

One thing I have to say is that these brakes rock !!! Holy Sh1t it stops...

Drives way better with 17x12 drag radials than the 18x9 with street tyres on it...the 18x9's just want to get sideways every time I breathe on it....

think I'm happy ???

Well it's finally home.

It left the shop Christmas eve.

Here is a short video of me driving it out...

nT5PhdN0VDs

I have a small number of things to complete. The tunnel ram and twin carbs need to be installed (and new bonnet) had to wait till post rego. Also need to get the front down a bit but collectors too close to ground so may need to do something there.

Now time to hit the road for some summer fun

Please, could you tell me the 0-60mph times you run on the STREET with the streettires?

I am not familar with quartermile times.

I am building a TT540 in an 68 Impala with 20" is Rims in the rear.
Around 1000hp on low boost is what I am after.

I go with a Jake´s Rod Shop full perimeter frame and due to this frame I am able to get any width of tires the rear of the car but everybody things I will have only problems wenn accelerating.

I go with an all aluminum BBC that is moved as far back to the firewall as possible,
with a rear mounted radiator,
a fiberglass hood,
and a very good rear end suspension with shockwaves instead of coilovers to get a softer ride for better weight transfer.

Everything heavy like battery, soundsystem and so on will go in the cars back.

You see I will do anything that is possible to get forward bite.

The car will have 1700 - 1800 kg, what 0-60mph times will I see for your opinion?

Thanks Hannes

I haven't timed any 0-60MPH yet as only has 300 K's on the car and haven't really put my foot into it that hard yet, but will do over the next week or so and let you know....

My car weighs 1660 Kg with a full tank and me in it

Wow, that is really a low weight

I look forward to hear about your experience with the bug sucker.

I hope I can run big power since it has been said more then 600HP is not possible in a street car (I really dont hope so....)

Exactly the look I want. What was the final wheel and tire sizes front and back? I'm loving that look man. I just picked up a 67 last week and have been searching trying to find the look and you nailed it.

Well then you'll love these pics !

Rims and Tyres:

Front = 17 x 7 Rushforth Concept II's with 235 x 35
Back = 17 x 12 Rushforth Concept II's with M&H 390 x 40 Drag Radials

I love the look, sits perfect. Mind you it's had some work to get it there. Full tubs, narrowed chassis and 4 link, and even had half and inch out of the outer qtr but love the look.

Let me know what else you want to know, I have a very very detailed build thread on www.usmuscle.com.au

Did 10.3 secs @ 130 mph, smoking the tyres the first 80 feet. Easy low 9's if I can get it to hook up......and I drive this thing in peak hour traffic to the office.
