well here's a couple pics of some progress, exhaust it in 3" mandrel bent tight fit but looks good, I worked all day on the front bumper I took 2 69 camaro bumpers and did some chopping its almost done have to do some more welding and smoothing but it looks pretty good ( yes I seen troy do this with sick fish I dont like to copy but its was easier than building something from scratch) I'll move to the lower valance next not sure what I'm going to do with it yet. Then I'll start on the firewall and engine compartment.

well not much time left to get it done for the power tour but I'll take it even if its in primer, with all the customer projects and this depressing winter it's been a slow moving project but I made some good progress this week making the trans tunnel and smoothing out the engine compartment, I hope by next weekend I'll have the underside bedlined and the engine compartment painted so I can start putting this thing back together. Here's a couple pics maybe some more next week.

Comming along great. Got a question for you. Im taking the paint off my car and now im into the nooks and crannies. Did you get all the dirt and surface rust out from around where the upper A arms go on and below that where the cam bolt mounts are welded onto the frame.? If so, what did you use?

I got lucky I bought this car last year from a guy that just restored it and had it out on its 2nd run and got hit in the left front not bad but he had enough and wanted out, I talked to the owner and he had the car stripped and painted so this thing is clean I own a bodyshop and it's so nice I'm not going to strip the car but in your case a little laquer thinner and a scotch brite goes along way or if you can pressure wash it and then use a sandblaster, that works great too you can get a cheap hand held spot blaster and they work great for small stuff.

With the headers and that big ol hemi I thought it would be the only way to get to the alignment bolts, I'll make covers that bolt in so you wont notice the holes, on the drivers side I left the front stock because I'll put an air box there.

This is exactly the conversion I am considering for my '71 Road Runner. Here's where I sit so far.
SUSPENSION:
Already have the AlterKtion, w-p/s, rear coil over AirRide setup for the suspension. This setup is not installed yet as I am just getting the finished body up on the stands now.
ENGINE:
I was going with the 440-6 that has been in the car since '80, but have shifted my wants to installing the new 6.1 crate kit now available. I am in the process of researching all the items to make this fit. I want to add A/C to the car regardfless of engine. The only thing now, is costing out the two engine choices and making the decision as to which way to go. I am REALLY leaning towards the 6.1.
TRANSMISSION:
I have had a Keisler 5spd int he car since the summer of '01. It has worked flawlessly and will go back in.
Well, that is the direction I am going. Not a hardcore G-Machine, but more towards the cruising Pro-touring.
I have some specific questions for my next post.
Gary
BTW, my '71 was a feature car in Mopar Muscle in the Sept. '99 issue. I know, that was a long time ago, but the car is a nice example that I have bounced back between stock-modified over the almost thirty years I've owned it.

Tellyv, LOVE what you are doing to your Cuda' :hail: :hail: :hail: Can you give any insight or suggestions to avoid any pitfalls when doing this setup? Here's a few questions;
1. How much clearence does the 6.1 have with the AlterKtion? Pan? A/C unit?
2. Did you get together with Bill Reilly prior to doing this to get his suggestions for the conversion?
3. Did you have to get the TTI's custom made, or do they have something for this conversion?
4. Is your 6.1 out of a production car, or did you get it from Mopar Performance?
5. What Engine management system are you using, and where are you mounting the system?
6. If it is a production 6.1, are you modifying the computer system from the donor car? Are you using o2 sensors? What are you running exhaust wise from the headers back?
I'll come up with more questions, but any help you can give is TRULY appreciated. Love what you are doing. My only regret is I didn't make the decision to go with the modern drivetrain earlier, as I would have reworked (smoothed) the cowl and inner panel like you did.
Thanks, Gary

This pic is an Abody with AlterK/6.1. The pic uses the older style crossbar, he now does a mandrel bent one, but same dimensions. AC compressor fits well, you would have even more room. Bill (RMS) has done a few of these now.

Thanks for the photo.
I spoke with Bill this morning about the swap. I also have the older style crossmember. He stated that the member had to get different brackets welded to it to except the 5.7/6.1 mounts. I could do it myself or send him the crossmember for him to do it. He also said he worked directly with TTI to develop the headers they now sell for this conversion. If you go to the TTI site, you will see there is actually a specific TTI header for the RMS suspension. Next was the oil pan clearence. Bill suggested the stock truck pan or the Charlie's pan. If I wanted to use a Milodon<sp> I would have to drop the rack alittle for clearence.
I am still leaning towards this conversion.

I'll try to answer most of these, the motor is a 07 charger out of a wreck and it had 6k miles on it, I went with the automatic just for my budget, I'm using a street and performance wire harness with a stock style computer that will also work with the tranny, I had enough wire to run the harness in the drivers wheel well and I mounted the computer in the drivers kick panel. The headers are from tti made to fit the alterktion kit they should have a set for your car. The only clearance problems I had was the rack to oil pan clearance and with a couple of love taps to the pan everything worked out well, I used all the stock accesories and the a/c compressor with a southern air hot rod style system, I did have to buy the adaptor to the compressor to get a.n. fittings to work I bought them from bouchilon performance (I'm sure I spelled that wrong). If you have anymore ? let me know I had alot of help from dave weber at modern muscle in martinsville and I'll get you his # thanks telly

alterktion with airride and p/s, rear modified airbar 4-link-system from air ride technologies for 68-70 b-body's! next step in a few month: 14/13" brakes with 6- and 4-pistons...and later another engine!

sometime ago I realized my goal to take it on the power tour wasnt going to happen, then the car craft nat. and it sure wasnt looking like I would even get to the good guys show one hour from me, so I had to make a choice get it done enough to work the bugs out and enjoy it for a month or waite intill next year and I'm sick of not having any fun so its coming out!!!! and I sure didnt want it to look like crap so I painted some of it, its only paint and I own a bodyshop I'll get my paint rep to give me some free paint, oh and this thing is far from done this winter its getting some cool body mods custom front and rear valances and maybe rocker extensions. I really like the "clean-up cover" metalwork. Gives me a couple ideas for the '71 RR project which will eliminate the need to weld up every hole in the inner fender areas. I especially like the shroud in front of the radiator. It really cleans up the open between the rad support and front header.

that is one badass ride you got going there, have you heard anything bad about these aftermarket frontends causing the car to buckle?? we put a similar one in the 70 cuda we built with the viper motor and the owner is worried now as he has heard of several E bodies folding up at the front ! as the original chassis puts all the load thru the torque boxes via the torsion rods so the inner fenders dont take any load but when going to a coilover set up this puts all load thru the front rails and inner fenders,do you have any thoughts or input to add as we have another cuda to do with the same front end and the owner doesnt want to modify the topside at all, lastly, whose wiring harness is it? as i would like to fit an srt in an earlier barracuda at some time in the not to distant future.

Excellent job Telly! Thats great that you can drive it, enjoy it, and still work on it. I like the wheels just the way they are, think that if the centers were black it would take away from the loks of the car. That stance is killer! You were on the money. I bet those poor Nittos get a heck of a workout with that Hemi, I own a 72 Camaro Z28 and a Cuda or Challenger are the only two cars I would even consider trading for. Great job, very clean not over the top crazy, just tastefully done. NICE!

The AlterKtion from RMS puts the load on the K-member itself and front frame rails, not the inner fenders at all, actually the hole where the shocks originally mount becomes obsolete. There are AlterKtion's w/ 60K plus miles on them now without any issues.
XV is another option, a much greater investment $$ and fabrication, uses C5 suspension. Way badass, but double the money $$

i know what you are saying but the inner fenders are all that support the front frame rails and the frame rails were never designed to take the load at that point, if the car is 100% rustfree it may be ok though, thanks for the input.

Isn't that the Magnumforce front? They used it on the Sick Fish, It does mount the coilovers in the orginal damper locations, looks scary to me. Boyd Coddington also used it on the MAX HEMI '64 Polara. Don't know it that's the one you mean?

the sick fish I do believe did not have an xv I'm not sure what it did have I'll check the build book at the shop tomorrow, the alterktion does not use the stock shock mounts it has there own brackets off of the k-member so your coil over or shockwave does not use the stock mounting location!!!!

I hope this doesn't cause too much debate, but I keep hearing from a "very few" on different boards about how the RMS puts stress on the frame rails. I have the RMS sitting in garage and have stared at this setup. Unless the self-contained coil brackets fold inward, how does this setup put undue stress on the frame? And, so I don't mis-communicate, the key phrase in my statement is "undue stress". Looks to be one of the best thought-out systems I have seen. At this point, I'm glad I purchased it!!!!

i dont think the concern is that the coilover brackets will bend its that the whole frame is pushing up against the frame rails and inner fenders or that the weight of the car is forcing down (same thing) whereas the original torsion bars move all the forces back to the torque boxes where there is a lot more structural strength, i have no personal thing against rms , infact when i start my mopar it will more than likely have one as i cant afford an xv system but i will also fit chassis connectors so as to make a continuous rail front to back to help it out. maybe this is why the general lees always folded up so easily!!lol, i dont think anyone is out to diss any companies product but i also think it is a legitimate concern especially as there are more than a few crusty frame rails out there and there are some really sharp minds on this site so between everyone we should be able to get it sorted so we can all put any possible issues to rest.

As I said, Sick Fish has a Magnumforce front end. It was built before XV on the market.
I've never heard anything bad about the RMS, but as said it does put the stress on the rails. The best system in my eyes is the XV, they have extra tubes inserted in the rails to stiffen it up and they have developed a front end stiffening kit that IMO should be a part of the XV Lvl II front suspension package.
Anyone that want to educate themselfs on Mopar coilover systems should read this entire thread:

there are alot of different subframes or k-frames out on the market. like most people I build my cars to drive not race, the cost of xv just wasnt in the budget I build my cars to have fun and sell so the cost does come into the whole aspect of things and if I have to choose between total race performance or drivability I choose drivablility how many times are you going to race your car? maybe at a goodguys autocross? around here theres not many places to autocross so my cars are built for looks and definatly some performance but not for full on race cars. I highly doubt that what the normal driver does with these cars would cause them to calapse unless there a total rust bucket that wasnt fixed right. You could also build a front hoop out of roll cage tube, come off of the firewall and run it just behind the rad. support, that would be pretty easy and I think theres plenty of room for it. telly

Any updates?
What a/c system are you using? I noticed you had the condenser mounted vertically, and not horizontally as vintage air states.
I'm really not sure, maybe they can go either way.

Southern Auto Air, I changed the mounting of the a/c condensor so it's horizontal now(I called them and they said not to put it vert.), as for update I've been pounding the hell out of her just got back from motorstate and it did well, besides it needs a little bigger brake system, we were about in the middle of the pack on the auto cross so not to bad still trying to figure out where to set the ride height, it likes to roll over really bad unless theres a ton of air in it so I'll have to work on that a little, I still have a couple things to finish a little wireing and the a/c needs to be charged. telly
