Hidden Rust- Need to Neutralize

After a recent rainstorm I discovered I have a leak that resulted in the carpet on the passenger side of my "way overdue in starting restoration process" Camaro.

To make a long story short I've now taken all of the carpet, insulation, etc out and have bare metal floors on the passenger side up to the bottom of the console on the passenger side.

Needless to say the floor has started to develop some surface rust. I'm not ready to start full disassembly on the car so I need an effective way to neutralize the rust for the time being.

I've been reading up on options and they seem to range from a wire brush and then a quick coat of spraypaint all the way to POR 15. POR-15 seem like more of an option when all of the bodywork is finished but I'm not quite sure.

Any suggestions appeciated.

Jeff, Find the leek and fix it . That will stop the rust from getting any worse.
Clean and treat the rust on the floor when the car is blown apart if that's
what you plan.

If its only surface rust dont worry about it. Fix the leak and dont worry about it.

If it makes you feel better to get rid of it now, sand it off and treat the metal with Metal Prep or Picklex 20 or Ospho or some other form of metal prep. I like the Picklex personally but there are plenty of others that work fine for what you need right now.

This is the first car I'm going to be attempting to restore so I'm sure it's just newbie nerves causing me to blow things out of proportion. :_paranoid

I'm going to sand it off and treat it... just makes me feel better.


Now I just have to fix the leak. It seems like it's coming in at the top of the windshield and dripping down the rear view mirror... time to go read my assembly manuals and figure out how to get the trim and stuff off :D
