I went down to LA this Friday to do a photoshoot of my car for Super Chevy magazine (thats another post later on when the issue comes out around June :DThanks Steve Rupp for sending them my way....). The theme for the issue is going to be something along the lines of finding old musclecars in fields and salvage yards, so the photographer set up the shoot in a local salvage yard that had some old musclecars in it.

The "day to day" side of the yard was typical crap, but this guy had alot of nice cars just sitting there rotting !!! Take a look at the pictures..... yes thats about 18 1st gen camaros....including SS, RS, Z28's and convertibles !!!! He has about 10 2nd gen camaros.....again including some Z28's, SS and RS cars.... corvettes, a Mach 1 Mustang, GTO, Formula Firebird, El Caminos, a 56 Chevy wagon, early mustang coupes, etc etc etc

NONE OF THE STUFF IS FOR SALE....NONE OF IT !!!

And most its been sitting there for 20 years!!! He doesnt even want any of his info in the magazine because he doesnt want people calling or harassing him to sell any of it. Its such a waste of some cars with real potential.... Now granted some of them are probably rotted more than most guys want but at first look most of them are very salvageable.

It was the typical.... they're worth some much money and I'm gonna restore them and sell them blah blah blah....... if it hasnt happened in 20 years its not gonna happen !!!

Such a shame....

What kind of knucklehead would do this to these cars? He's got to know they are all worth something.

What a shame....what's this guy's problem? I mean, is his intention to restore every car in there or take a piece from each one and build one car? Man, that's so frustrating!

Just tell him that each of those cars has depreciated in value due to the year and condition, and that they are worth roughly $1K each, then buy all of them at once :)

I'm really curious......if they're "not for sale" (everything is for sale)....they WHAT exactly is his "plan" for these cars? :willy: :willy:

Did he give you any insight?

If he plans on restoring and selling them, he better get to work! Looks like 50 years worth or projects!

I am not one to get all sentimental about cars. They are sheetmetal, not people. I don't mind people cutting up classics, etc. One of my favorite sayings (can't remember where I heard it) is "anyone can restore a classic, but it takes a real man to cut one up"
HOWEVER. This should be a crime, what this guy is doing. There is a massive difference between cutting cars up and letting them ROT. What possible reason could he have? I have a friend with a Supercharged 57 T-Bird that says it is his kid's college fund. That makes sense. This, I don't know?
It is always frustrating to see people who have something you want and don't respect it, don't deserve it, or don't care....

What a waste. He'll end up dying and someone will either buy the collection for pennies on the dollar and sell them for a profit (if any by then). Or some jackass family member with no knowledge of cars will come along and clear out the property and send these all to the crusher. S*** like this just pisses me off. If you don't have the means or resources why not make them available to someone that does. Theres nothing wrong with being selective about who you sell too with the hope you made the right decision. I know of so many cars within a 2 mile radius of my house just withering away in the elements its sad to look at. Hell I've got a Nova in storage I haven't seen in 4 years and its killing me not to be able to do anything with, and thats 1 car. Imagine a yard full.

Tim, thanks for forwarding that to me. Now I feel like a bad person for my mom's back yard. Dick. But seriously, that IS truly criminal. Having those pictures posted up here without an address is criminal too. It's like I'm a six year old and you're waving an ice cream cone in front of my face. What's your problem man, do you like watching us squirm like chihuahua's chasing a laser pointer?

My disdain for you is a thinly veiled mask of my own despair at seeing so much beauty oxidizing into oblivion.

...I wonder how many more of "these guys" are out there.....

I would venture to say that there are quite a few hoarders that are configured in just this way, ie, a late model wrecking/recycling business with a lot of the owner's "good stuff" hoarded out back.

Unfortunately there are probably hundred of yahoo's like him out there doing the same thing. By the time they sell it or fix it, its too rusted to restore. I know of one guy not far from me that has 50 Chevelles rusting in his backyard and have been "warned'", he isnt buyer friendly.

I was being sarcastic LOL.
I know there are alot of these types.
There is some old lady 2 miles from my shop that has a 1967 camaro SS under a rotting, ripped grey tarp. I moved here 7 years ago and noticed it back then. Its since had 3 grey tarps replaced. I was warned by friends not to go knock on the door... "been there done that" sort of thing. Story is her son was killed back in the 70's and the car has sat since then in the same spot.
Its under a tree on pavers with 4 flats. I came up with a great sad story to befriend this "old lady" and went to the door one day. I got up to the stoop and read a sign next to the doorbell that read "car not for sale, dont ask".
I never did ring the bell.... damn !

I know....it made me sick just staring at those cars.

I dont know what the hell he's thinking. I kept telling him they arent worth a dime if you never sell them !!!! I think its some form of ego thing to have all of those cars that everyone would die to have. Its a "look what I have and you cant have any !!" " I may never do anything with them, but you still can't have them". Maybe he's waiting for that "golden opportunity" that usually never comes

The guy was real nice and personable....but in a used car salesman type of way. Lots of "I built this and made this deal for this car, and sold that car", blah blah blah... He would talk your ear off too. One of those guys that even as you start to walk away he keeps talking. Nice but I kept feeling like "give me a break.."

Those cars will be there until he dies.... I'm convinced of that. Then his family or the bank will sell them off...at least whats left of them after they keep rotting.

I know it was kind of cruel to post these pix and keep the location secret, but sorry..... just cant do it right now...give me a couple of months after the guys forgets about me and we'll see. If it got out now, he would know it was me.... and I might need him. Now that he knows me, maybe I can weasle some stuff from him :)

Can you "weasle" me this 2nd gen ?

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee264/DRJDVM95/IMG_1377.jpg

hey was he moving them around ? the yellow 69 was parked next to this 2nd gen and then out by itself......

He wont sell it... I asked....about 10 times :)

We did move the yellow/black car to be in one of the shots...... the car hasnt moved in over 20 years. You should have seen them yanking on it with the forklift...I was waiting for the entire front subframe to come flying out. I was cringing and gritting my teeth the entire time. They finally got it moved without any major damage.

My 5 year old son was with us....we kept telling him it was Bumblebee and maybe if he talked to it, he would transform for him....it was really cute when he kept telling the car he knew where the "allspark cube" was located :)

Sad to see this type of stuff of happening. The guys needs to have the **** slapped out of him for thinking he is going to restore that many camaros. Just give up and sell them off, Then they can go to good homes and be restored to as new condition or turned into pro touring cars. I would rather see a SS convertible converted into a pro touring car then just sit and rott away. (DREAM camaro= 69 ZL1)

fine, i'll just google earth it and look for the parking lot set back in the early 70's. I mean thats alot of Z stripes in one area.

Is a shame cause they will all rust away.

I've always taken the attitude that, even though the guy is a major league 'TARD.....I've always believed that the more cars that are out of commission, the higher the value of the active cars becomes.

Doesn't make it any easier to look at and dream though.....

We had tales of a musclecar graveyard around where I live. Supposedly him and his brother were buying up wrecked and cheap muscle cars from across the us back in the late 70's. He has about 30 or so from the 60's era he guesses out back in his yard. You could drive by this place a 100 times and never guess the mess out back, because his house is run down and he has trees all over the sides blocking the backyard view.

I heard about it in chats with other people who heard the same story, but never anyone who knew whee the guy lived. The only reason I found out was at the barber shop, and people yacking about others. Just so happened they got talking about old Soandso with old cars galore, and how they were sitting there rotting away out back.

Needless to say that caught my attention, and I twisted my way into the chat and got the guys address which sadly was only 3 miles from me and I never knew! So I popped in one saturday before lunch and told him, I heard he had all these old cars, etc.... and asked if I could just look at them, being an old car fan and all.

He laffed and we walked around the side of this house, I was excited. I was about to enter the fabled muscle car graveyard. The old man was muttering something but my mind was just guessign at what treasures he might have, and how could i wrestle one away from him.

As we came around the corner there is was, the fabled muscle car graveyard everyone in my area talked about.
I saw;

73 mustang shell sitting on the ground, no interior/engine.
75 camaro that had been rolled by his brother
71 ford pickup, that had more rust than paint
64 impala 4 door that had become a dog house
and a couple various farm tractors

The old man told me not to feel bad, I was not the 1st person who came knocking on his door about a bunch of old muscle out back. He said; "I am old son, but not crazy. I would of cashed in on them cars long ago had I had em."

There are so many weirdos in this world.

It doesn't take rocket science to figure out how this story ends....

He keeps rehashing the same old rhetoric about how he's going to restore them someday and yadda, yadda, yadda and then one day the worthless piece of crap dies and his family has to hire a company to come out and auction off all his never realized projects, many of which are now beyond repair thanks to his preschool level intelligence.

He's the last of a dying breed. If God's looking for another village idiot to add to his kingdom...he can take this moron tomorrow.
