Went out for dinner and a drive this evening with Laurie. On the way home and sitting at a stop light when all of a sudden the car starts making this insanely loud banging sound. Sounded like a midget under the hood with a really big hammer swinging away. I was so shocked that I kind of froze for a moment. The the car just stopped running after about 8 to 10 bangs. I looked in the rear view mirror and couldn't see the car behind me due to all the smoke and for a moment thought we might be on fire. Thank goodness that wasn't the case and a stranger appeared to help me push the car out of the intersection. Laurie called into the police department and we had an officer in no time to make sure no one hit us on the side of the road. I noticed the car is covered in oil which I'm sure isn't a good sign. So the Bucket sits out front of the house under her cover. Maybe tomorrow I can get a few strong guys to help me push it up the driveway and into the garage. Good thing I was planning on switching over to an LS2 or 7 or I'd be really pissed!

See whats wrong and maybe you can just through a short block at it. 350 short blocks are pretty inexpensive. Atleast you would have a running engine to sell when you swap in your LS7. I am happy to come over and help you push it and diagnose the problem.

Once I get it back up the driveway and into the garage I plan on seeing what the problem is. Maybe (I doubt it) it's an easy fix. Not going to hold my breath though.
Thanks for the offer to help. I just might be giving you a call tomorrow.

I'm very tempted to tear the entire car apart and re-do every thing. At least that way I know it's all done right and it would fix a few things that could use attention. Not that there's anything wrong with the car but just little stuff that could be better.
Right now the biggest issue is getting it up and into the garage. Wishing I had a smaller driveway that wasn't such a slope. Maybe I can pick up some extra help that standing around Home Depot.

It's locked up. Tried to turn it over while waiting for the tow truck and it sounded like a sledge hammer on an anvil. Going to need some good old fashion muscle.

Still haven't gotten it up the hill and into the garage but I hope that will happen tonight. Stuck my nose under the hood for a few more out curiosity than anything and found the radiator nearly dry. Where did all that anti-freeze go? Into the oil pan. Pulled the dip stick and thought WTF? Odd color and smell for oil. So pissed I just closed the hood and covered it back up.
Rybar: I think that's exactly what's going to happen but sadly not till after April. Just have to use the time to get everything down on paper that will happen to the car. Trying to stay positive here.

Thanks to Aj and a few other friends who lent some muscle we where able to push the car up the hill and into the garage. So at least it's safely locked inside if nothing else. There was some debate about how the coolant made it's way into the oil and weather or not it would be an easy fix. I'm headed to Peru for work next week and will be gone until mid January, so I'm not going to dig into it until I get back.

For a guy who normally has one eye on gauges at all times as part of his job, that's kind of embarrassing. :_paranoid Honestly, I was so surprised that I didn't even notice. I had a few engines fail in flight and one on take off (holy **** that runway got short quick!) but there was always a warning it was coming. Usually oil pressure and temp. Where in the motor was the dime?
When I pulled the intake manifold off it fell out. I think it was blocking one of those holes in the head. They are about half way back.
I've never torn a motor apart before so this is all new. But I'm thinking those holes are to allow oil to the base of the carb, or some thing like that. Is there ever a reason to block those. The dime appeared to be the right size.

Could be that it was used to block the exhaust crossover. But then you would find one more. The other one maybe caused the havoc if it fell down on the rotating parts.

Well now I know what that crossover is for. lol Only found the one so far. Off to buy some tools to get at the accessory dive. Once that's all off I'll pull it for the remainder of the tear down.
It's a bummer regardless, but if it's from a dime that would make it a little worse.

I bought my stand from Harbor Freight. Good up to 2000 lbs and is a 4 point. It was under $100 bucks. Probably not the best quality but my fully dressed big block has been setting on it for months. Sorry to hear about the engine kaboom Curtis, I feel awful about it since you bought it from me. I don't know who built that engine, since the previous owner installed it before I bought it. It sure did run good before this carnage happened though.
Those heads should be easily repairable, the benefits of aluminum. They just weld up the scratched areas and grind them smooth again. I've had much worse mangled aluminum heads get repaired like new.
Measure the diameter of those cylinders, I'm curious about how big they were bored. Yes, those cylinder walls look thin, but that is pretty much how all cylinder walls appear. I'm betting the walls gave in, and then the pistons got eaten by the fragments.
If you need additional help on LS1 related stuff, let me know. I have a few connections

There is absolutely no reason for you to feel bad. I am still very excited about my car. Dealing with you was very straight up and easy. You've been very supportive during this down time and offered to help any way you can numerous times. Everyone that has driven the car loves it and this is just one of those things that didn't give any warning. A bummer, but not a big deal.
I dropped off a 350 short block, heads, intake, etc. yesterday to an engine shop here in Vegas. They are giving it all a good going over and should have some info on building it up in the next day or two. Once it's all back together I'm going to put it on the Dyno so it's running at it's peak. I'll post the measurements on those cylinders as soon as I get them. I know a lot of people are wondering the same thing you are.
While it's down I've decided to add a few new parts and when it hits the road again it will have a new stance and stop a heck of a lot faster (not that it was bad before). Having the rear wheels re-hooped so they tuck in and finally adding the RS kit. I send and post some pictures as things move along.
I've gotten a lot of support from some great people! Anthony, Tyler, Frank, Steve O, AJ and many others have been wonderful. It's all good and thanks!!

It won't be crazy, but it wont suck either. :captain:

Damn that RS nose looks killer! The new brakes and spindles look great too. I can't wait to see it completed. Did you already get the rear wheel offset changed?actually tony it really seem like he might get away with just rolling the fenders, we were checking it today and with the harder spring rate he would have to get real agresive body roll to evn get the car near the fenders. plus the wheel with that offset are already rubbing the inner fenders.

Still a bit of work to get it all to fit right, but it's coming along. Like Aj said it looks like I might get super lucky and only need to roll the fenders. Talked to the guys at I-Forged and they say I can mill a bit off the back side of the center section if needed.
awr68 AJ or Curtis, did you get the back to drop anymore today?
Yeah, Curtis sent me some pics last night and it does look like the fender roll might fix it all. He does want the car to still come down a lot more though...
Got the car pulled away from the wall and found that the drivers side sits the way I expected it to. Not sure why but the passenger side sits almost an inch and a half higher. It did drop a bit but not much. Just need to tinker with it a bit is my guess.

Anthony-
This is why I didn't recomend a DSE 3" spring (beside the fact that the L2 CAT5 spring is much better in terms of construction):
http://69.94.75.177/forum/showthread.php?t=40988
http://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18451
In that thread:
DSE 3" drop leafs , early construction of car:
http://www.t56kit.com/projects/padilla/27.jpg
Same leafs, after constuction, and with a 1" lowering block:

Here is the 69 we are finishing on the Global West L2CAT5 spring- no lowering blocks, non full weight:

O.K. Here's a shot of the drivers side. You can see (by looking at the other picture) that it sits a lot lower. Not much weight in the car and it needs to be driven a bit to get things to settle in. This is about what I expected from looking at other cars. Steve O did a great job of documenting his car when he went through all this. Looks like it's on track to me.

Well it's finally back on the road and running very well. There are a few bugs to work out but there's always a shake down period after changing things out.
Honestly, the car wouldn't be anywhere close to being finished if it wasn't for the tremendous support I received from four great guys.
Tyler and Russ from ATS gave up there weekends to support the cause, lending know how and experience. They drove at least 30 minutes to my house and made several trips to the shop for various tools or parts that we needed.
Jesse too made several long trips all the way from the other side of town to help. He did a lot of wiring and a bit of welding on the car, making sure the RS kit was installed properly and working right.
Aj...Well, he did a lot of everything. His willingness to jump right in and get to it was impressive. The kind of guy your glad to have in your corner.
I also received a lot of support and motivation from many of my fellow :lateral: members. Thanks for keeping me on track.

I don't care how hot it gets out here this summer, I'll still drive the car. Mainly early morning or later evening due to the heat. I need to get AC but it will have to wait at least a year.
I took the car to get my hair cut yesterday. When I walked out it was sitting by it's self and looked kind of curled up and ready to bite. I actually stopped walking and just stood there staring at it. All I could think was wow that thing looks bad ass. LMAO I am stoked to have it back on the road...new and improved.

Thanks for the well wishes. I'm very excited for today!! It's been a lot of fun running around in the Camaro and all our guests are floored at the first sight of the car. No one had any idea how it looked.

Thanks! A lot of hours went into getting it finished. Got it all done (with a lot of help) just in time for the wedding. We've had a blast running around in the car. The wedding went off with Zero problems and we couldn't be happier with the way things went down. In fact we are still celebrating.

I've got the spoiler on it. Just hadn't gotten the hardware for it before I took those pictures. I would have waited but everyone was was wanting to see it. So I caved. I'll get a few updates in the next day or two. Our last wedding guest just left and we are wiped out. If you need me I'll be on the couch with Mrs. Oz

Tyler pushed me to add a few pictures to the thread showing the car now that we finally have the stance where we want it. It's taken a long time to get done mainly due to my work schedule. Having a lot of fun driving around Vegas in it, but DANG it's hot here!

I think I get more use out of it than she does. lol Not sure about the blocks. I think it will still come down a little. Besides, I'm already rubbing the pipes if I'm not careful.
Looking really good Hopefully be doing some cruising with you soon.
Todd, I see Cars and Coffee in the near future. We need to get all the 1st and 2nd gens we can. Pretty poor turn out in that department. So far it's just been Aj and I.

No not yet. I'm going to re-run all the fuel lines with stainless, have ATS relocate the pump to the back of the Ricks tank. Ditch that big can style filter and replace it with an inline type. I ordered some jets for the carb and I'll be playing with that once those arrive. I have driven the car a few time since our adventure and the problem always starts when the temp hits 107. The carb is set up for 70 degrees at sea level from the factory, so that's got to be the problem. I'll know more in few days. One thing is for sure...I'm learning a lot!
How's your interior going?
