It was a Turbo 4.9 L. I've got 30 different renderings, from 4 designers, totally undecided right now.
The 2nd-gen camaro / firebird chassis (f-body) version of our G-Machine Chassis is almost done. LS3 block is here, it'll get a LS7 crank and dry sump, pair of T61's, 6.6 or 6.9L.
I love cars from the Southwest, no rust except where pine needles collected in a couple spots. Floor is discolored from the heat of those old pellet style cats. Only surprise was the previous shoddy 1/4 panel repair.
Chassis will be done and body blasted in 2 weeks.

I don't care for the white/red/blue... looks live a Revel model car or something.

Of those you've shown, I still like the white/red best. But there's tons of color combos out there that would look great on it.

Jeff:

Since the '80 Model had 1 Turbo, and yours will have TWO, you ought to do something subtle, and put a Matching, "Turbo Bulge", on the other side of the hood of your car.

It would only be noticed by the few people who really knew that model, and it would be a very logical thing to do as well.

When someone sees, "One Bulge", they think (If it is stock), "Piece of cake, I'll blow this thing off the road".

Soon word gets around, "One Bulge is ok, Two Bulges, UH OH!, Crap!, I'm Screwed!"

Thoughts?

Ty O'Neal

BTW: Your chassis looks great. I was making some mental notes conserning our phone conversation.

After seeing the awesome Forgeline wheels Frank designed on the 69TA at SEMA, I was thinking of using them on this. They're patterned after the wider 8" WS6 Snow flakes of 78-81. These are 19's. Any comments?

18x12 BRE vs 19x12 FL is about 40% more.
Of course if you scrape a curb you can get a new modular rim half for a couple hundred instead of buying another wheel at $899.

takid455
02-18-2008, 05:43 AM
how much modification of the body is needed to fit the frame? I see you retain the original rear frame rails. Will you be using the stock shock mount locations in the rear?

I had a similar idea of doing a chassis for second gens when I was in college, but decided that integrate the frame into the body would yield a stronger application since the body is designed as a structural member being a subframe platform. However your frame seems to be 'slightly' more rigid than what GM had designed. Great work in any event. Will this frame work on all second gens are just 75-81 as the 70-74's have a narrower subframe b/c they did not have cats yet.

frankenstang
02-18-2008, 04:03 PM
No body mods to make the frame fit the car. If you wish to min-tub to get 12.5 inch wheels back there, no problem. The shock mounts are part of the chassis and use a coil over or an Air-Ride setup. Jeff's T/A will use the Air-Ride on all 4 corners. With this design, you retain the ability to use the stock fuel tank. I will have to ask him about the narrower subframe issue on the 70-74 cars.

jeff s
02-18-2008, 08:28 PM
Will fit all 1970-1981. We do not use stock shock mounts.

Jeff:

I really like your chassis, and the Trans Am you are building.

If someone wanted too do away with the subframes altogether and sit the body directly onto the chassis to lower the center of gravity as much as possible, it that something you could do?

If so, do you think it would have a big effect on the handling of the car?

Put another way:
(I guess channeling would be the right term. Say you wanted to have 5.0 inches of clearance for running at the track and from the side you didn't see the frame rails/Tubes.)

What would be involved in doing this other than removing the original frame rails and redoing the floor?

Have you done this, and what effect did it have on the car?

Thanks,

Ty

jeff s
02-25-2008, 07:41 PM
Ty, What we're doing is creating a stiffer, stronger foundation to attach your suspesion to. No matter how good a subframe, the floor still flexes at it's attachment points. With a full frame there are more attachment points and the load gets spread over a wider area, less flex, better. We designed it to not cut the floor as that doesn't fit everyone's capabilities or budget.
As far as channeling the body over the chassis, There is some advantage due to lowering the CG. OUr chassis could be welded into slots cut in the floor.
If the body is too low on the chassis then one needs to add humps on the top of the fenders, and the wheel wells need to be raised, like Bob J Cuda, so the tires dont hit. To do all this cost's a lot of money for a tiny benefit. Happy to do it for the right customer.

Keep post pictures, and when you can give us some Chassis and Suspension specs. Engine specs and performance numbers, and some handling numbers when you can get those done. I bet it will be quite impressive.

Any Idea how much it will weigh when you are done? The 1979 T/A I had I think came in at 3800 pounds or so. I'm sorry I sold it.

I saw one a couple of weeks ago and took a look in the back seat.

1)I must of been REAL skinny, and my Dates Really small, because with a backseat that size, I would bet it would be a definite source of "Safe Sex", now.

or

2) I guess I had my mind on other things at the time and didn't notice, or being in the sun all these years, it just shrunk like a New Cotton T-Shirt washed in hot water.

I vote for the second one.:unibrow:

Ty,
Since my 1003 hp Ultima GTR is 2300 lbs and kinda bare bones, this car is not going to be the lightest. We're doing a lot of sound deadening, stereo, etc. And I got my hands on a prototype Iron LS9 block (complete with oil squirters and bigger head bolts /studs) which all adds some weight. The chassis takes weight out of the car. I hope it ends up lighter than stock in the end, but I'm shooting for a lot more hp than my GTR, so it shouldnt be a problem.
The chassis geometry is nearly the same as all the 14 other chassis we offer. I would expect the same 1.08 lat g as we got with Randy Johnson's Chevelle which won the Car Craft Street Machine of the Year perfomance test competition, or slightly better. We always test our finished cars. BTW the Cutlass is near completion, since it was a running driving car when we started we did before testing.
The back seat, yea, LOL.

We've been working after-hours on this for the past few weeks. There are so many little details at the final stages of a build.

We made a big push last night to send the TransAm to compete in the Pro Builder Shootout at the CAR CRAFT Summer Nationals. We're excited and flattered to be competing against some great builders and cars from around the country. We would really appreciate your support (read: votes)! :)

You can vote online here: http://www.carcraft.com/summer_nationals/2012/pro_builder_shootout/index.html
Voting starts tomorrow (Friday) at 9am and goes until 12pm (noon) on Sunday.

Now, on to the pics!

Check out the intake tube Jeff designed... Both intercoolers feed into each end of this. To help the air make the sharp upward turn, Jeff used two 90-degree Vibrant pieces (cut down to about 45), which you can see inside:

And finally, the 1010hp twin-turbo LS9 engine. We've played around with a few intake options and finally deciding to fabricate our own. We're still going to powdercoat all the piping. Everything will be black for a simple OEM style. The whole feel/vibe of this car is understated style, luxury and performance.

Are these manifolds custom? They don't look like the same manifold on the altima.

Yes, custom. Made from 4" aluminum tubing.

The car looks great. I see you went with an intake elbow, do you know how many HP it will support? Nice work.

Nice! Love how low it is but the wheels are right out there with the body lines. Have you had a chance to get out and drive the car yet?

We'll chassis dyno and further tune the EFI next week.
Made over 1000 on the engine dyno. Packaging was a challenge we needed a slight elbow on the intake side to fit everything. Not sure if that'll cost any hp. I've driven it around the block a couple times, before the roads were salted up.
Thanks

Jeff's latest attention whore is up at the Milwaukee World of Wheels show this weekend. The car is amazing in person. Look for it in the Late Model Throttle booth. Those guys did a great job tuning the car to more than 1000 horsepower using 108 octane at the wheels. Made almost 900 on 93 pump gas!
