Looking for a bare block to attempt my first BBC build. What is the most desireable block or casting number to look for. Basically looking for the best foundation which to build upon. Did one block have issues that were corrected over another etc. Thanks in advance.

I dont know about casting quality etc... but if its a mild street build you may want to get a later model roller cam block that way it wont be as expensive to put a good hyd. roller cam in.

Not 100% on that but I think from the late 80's and on they had the factory roller cam. Just not sure when the switch was to cen VI. but I think most heads etc...will interchange

I've got two '90 truck 4 bolt main blocks that are cast Hi-Perf. And as far as I know are one of the strongest blocks that GM made and will go to .125 over and still be safe, if needed....But are not fact. roller. ti-bar retro roller lifters are not really that expensive any more.
In fact we've made over 700 rwhp with a F1r with these blocks(w/iron heads even) and built several nitrous motors making over 1k spraying....
