Here is an interesting find an all original 1969 Chevy Camaro with no X-code, so with the right parts this car could have been a SS or RS that is in amazing condition as you can see. It appears that it has been painted once about 10 years ago and everything else on the car is stock.

We are going to tear it down and turn it into a full on 1969 Chevy Camaro Yenko Clone with all modern day equipment

I will try to keep a weekly update on the project so you can see the build and what we do to it.

Check back soon

We have picked the car up and taken it down to nothing, removed everything from it eninge, interior and all panels.

Sending it out to be media blasted and then we will seal it and start all the fab work.

This car is being built into a Yenko Clone as stated so there will not be that much body fabrication as the car needs to be stock looking but very clean.

Once we get the car back from Media Blasting we will know how good of a shell we have.

Car is back and as you can see not bad at all, just a few small rust spots that we will fix and then get started on the build. This should be a sick Camaro we are doing the following parts on the car

Chevy Crate 572 Engine
6 Piston Baer Brakes all way around
19-inch FS901 Fesler wheels
Air Ride Suspension
Ricks SS fuel Tank
Auto Meter Gauges
Goodmark Cowl Hood
Recaro Leather seats
Flowmaster exhaust 3-inch

Here are some shots of fixing some rust on the door and getting the firewall ready to be smoothed out. We do the car right we cut out any and all rust and weld in new metal for a rust free body.

fesler
12-05-2007, 02:24 PM
The Suspension, we removed all the factory suspension and installed the Air Ride Technologies upper and lower control arms up front with the Shock waves so we can get the car low.

Huge 6 piston Baer brakes all the way around

fesler
12-05-2007, 02:31 PM
19X10-inch FS901 Fesler wheels with black centers installed up front

6 Piston Baer brakes installed on the rear custom built Currie 9-inch rear end this car will be able to run a 13.5 wide rear tire if desiered.

Tubs

The rear of the Camaro is pointless from the factory with the way the rear frame rails are installed any kind of horse power would bend them up so the best thing to do with them is to remove the factory ones and install some good ones that can handle horse power

So we cut out the stock rear frame rails and inner fenders so we can make some new ones that will fit the larger wheels

The rear frame rails will be moved over a bit as well to clear the larger wheels and then we will build some custom sub frame connectors so strengthen the under side of the car

fesler
12-05-2007, 02:46 PM
The Engine

for anyone wondering why we wanted to strenghten the underside of the car maybe this will answer your questions

GM Crate ZZ572 Deluxe engine

stats
620HP on pump gas
650FT
Forged Crank
Forged Pistons
Forged Rods
.623-inches of valve lift
Compression 9.6:1
Rocker arms Aluminum roller style
850CFM carb
Aluminum water pump
will run on 92 octane all day long

Add the Vintage Air Frunt Runner system and its good to go

Question, does the lack of an X code denote a COPO. How so? (forgive my lack of knowledge)

Ron

No it does not, I was talking to a customer about a COPO we were doing and put that in here by mistake. This car is a base 1969 Chevy Camaro with no X-Code meaning the early camaro's did not have the X-code late ones do. The X-code is the body tag stating what the car came with from the factory and the early cars did not have this meaning you can turn that car into whatever you want to with the correct parts.

Radiator & Radiator Support

Here is the new Air Mobile large core billet alluminum radiator for a big Block Chevy Camaro and I will have these in stock and ready to ship if someone out there needs one.

I can send you the radiator and support ready to be installed or you can modify your stock one to fit the radiator and install yourself.

Thanks Fesler... I had decoded mine a while ago X44 (base car) with a V8 (3rd position of the VIN).

I used http://www.chevy-camaro.com/chevy-camaro-trim-tag-decode-1969.asp and I hadn't noticed the early 69s had no trim (X) code... thanks...again, awesome build with the "King of all Rats".... Ron

Tubs anyone

Here are the tubs we built for the new 19X12.5 wheels in the rear, we figure its better to build them to the car then it is to buy them, you get a much better fit and look when completed.

here we start by taking a flat sheet of 18gauge steem and rolling it to fit the inner fender, this will get cut perfect and welded with a clean edge so you cant tell where they start and end.

The cardboard template really cuts down on the cut and re cut time

this is half done now and will post more to show you the rest of what we did to get these this big.

now you have an idea of how low this car will sit, notice that its sitting on a set of wheel dollies so it will sit a lot lower

572 anyone

Here is the massive 572 GM Crate engine going into the car for final fitment before paint, we have to do a little mods to the fire wall so it will fit the dist with no rubbing problems

with the 4L80E tranny it huge overall and fits perfect well not perfect we have to do some more work to the firewall to fit it just right and I will post those tomorrow we are doing that right now.

OK so we just finsihed with the paint on the Camaro project and check it out, this still needs to be polished but you get the idea of the paint work we do. Notice how the paint looks better than my actual hand in the third picture.

Here is the engine and all suspension ready to go in now, all suspension is powder coated 50% black to just disapear and not take from the gloss paint

this is a mild build so we are staying with the stock sub-frame and using Air Ride Technologies upper/lower control arms with Shock waves,

The GM performance 572 engine is painted and ready to drop in

For the rear we went with a Currie 9-inch to handle that 572 power

Killer work and car... why the stock sub with a 285?

I was thinking the same thing! The car is stellar in every way and I know in typical Fesler fashion the car will sit perfect. Getting rid of stock sub would have incresed the tire capabilties - but also raise the scrub line big time. No disrespect Chris - as I said the car is awesome, just surprised with all the killer stuff on the car the stock frame remains.

We heat the frame and reshape it just enough to help clear the bigger wheels so that you can run this tire combo on a stock sub-frame no problems. We do it all the time and they sit perfect.

I know, I know please keep in mind that every car out there has a budget and sometimes its more important to spend the money in other places to achieve the same look and overall effect.

I am not 100% positive yet that changing the front sub-frame is that much better, I know you get some bennefits to it but for the most part we have gone both ways and I personally like the way the stock sub-frame is.

If I had it my way I would build a custom one like on almost every other car we do but on the Camaros its just not cost effective. These cars sit bitchen and have a killer drive with what mods we do. This is a full frame car now and the client wanted to keep it as stock as possible to the eye, if I change out the sub-frame all thats gone.

I have another Camaro in the works right now that you guys will flip on, nothing on the road like it and it sits 1" off the ground with 3-inch exhaust on it and you cant see the exhaust under the car. Building this one to set new standards.

We take the stock sub frame and clean it all up by welding up holes and smoothing it out, they look good after powdercoat or paint.

We did not build the Orion car so I cant tell you what they did. sorry

That camaro looks SWEET! I can't even imagine what a 572 would be like in that little car. I think you should do a little pinstripping on the passenger side interior compartment saying "Sit Down, Shut up, and Hold on" . That would be one hell of a ride. Sweet job so far Chris!

Its just the highest quality carpet you can buy, like from a mercedes and the way its put in makes it look perfect after forming. The interior is worth almost as much as the paint and most people will say thats crazy but when you drive down the road and feel like you are in a mercedes its worth every penny. If any of you are at Delmar come take a look at it and let us know what you think. :)

Well we are all moved in and have to finish the cars so I figured I would post some updates, we missed the Delmar show even though we did have the car ready to show, not running but show. Unfortunutly we have to move the same weekend to get out of the old shop so we missed a huge show. We will be at the Iowa and Ohio shows coming up next month so look for the big truck set up out there.

Well the car is about 98% done as we just have the fuel injection to finish, once we get that done we will be loading it in the stacker to start our long trip to Columbus.

I will post all the finished shots of the car and interior once we get all the painted parts back. Wait till you guys see the interior full leather wraped hand built console that just finished it off perfect.

Pictures coming soon

Did you have to modify the headers to get them to work? I've been told only Lemon's are a bolt on for the 572 with stock subframe. BTW I got a chance to see the shop last month and what a nice professional appearing shop. It is obvious you guys are very detail oriented and make some really sharp...I mean sick.... modified cars.

X2 - awesome rear seat!!

I would say the rear seat and center console are my favorite parts on the car, the rear seat is all hand built to hide the tubs and make it look like a stock style rear seat. I think we really nailed the look as the tubs come in about 3 inches on each side. The seat is tight for tall guys but for the kids its perfect.

This Car is super str8 and sweet.......But theres a few things that bother me just a few because it is really sweet, but the value covers are just painted black and were not smoothed up the texturing dosen't work on a car this smooth plus do we really need to see that its a 572. And the exaust looks like an after thought its hanging down wayyyyy to low under car be much smoother designed to fit up in the chassis, Nice car indeed just these details makes the car looked rushed! :D

Chris,

The car looks incredible.

Okay, People really I know we all want to pass judgement on everyone car. Heck I can look at my project and tell you what I would do over.

You have to remember this is a customers car and I am sure there was a budget and time constrants. So you can't do everything, you have to do everything that is within the customers budget.

Just currious how many people have actually had a custom exhaust built for there car. I am certain only few on this board have. It's not hard to get over 5 grand in time and materials.

Not meaning to "bash" anyone, just compare one nice car to another nice one. No disrespect to Fuel or its creators, just a friendly comment thats all, I opologize if I ruffled any feathers! after all, its just ones opinion which i figured we were all entitled to here. lol

That is all my comment was....a simple opinion. I can honestly say I meant no harm by it and was just using Fuel as a watermark of High Quality Camaros to judge Feslers Camaro by (if anything i would think that would be a flattering comment for the builders/owner of Fuel). That is all, I opologize if I offended anyone. Opinions should be welcome as long as they ar constructive.

To say one is nicer than the other is shooting from right field. Without seeing them both in person thats impossible to judge. Personal taste comes into play as well. Both fantastic builds and would be proud to own either.

On the other had, unless someone specifically states they're looking for critique, maybe you should keep it to yourself.

Perhaps less people will post pics of their projects in fear of the "experts" giving their 2 cents.

Anybody willing to drag that car from AZ to OH at nearly $5/gallon deserves a handshake and a thank you for making the show that much better. It's already an incredible show and picking a Top 5 will be extremely difficult regardless of who you think should win and making a commitment to bring another high end car all the way across the Country for us to look at deserves respect no matter what he brings home on Sunday.

I will be by Friday for my handshake and to say thank you. I suggest more guys with and especially guys without cars shooting for the Top 5 do the same because the show wouldn't be as great without cars and committed people like this.

Drive carefully, guys

Where are you getting the rear frame rails? Are you making them or buying them from someone? All of your builds are top notch. Thanks for the pics & info.

Just went thru the whole thing. Nice car.

I'm glad you used the original subframe! (since it works just FINE!) It reflects a discussion that was had in the suspension forum that ended in a war at some point between people that like (can) to throw cash for nothing and people with more sense than cash.... I like the fact you're showing it can be done and how!

Eric, the rails are competition engineering (unless i'm in error, which i would really doubt) and go for about 250$, you need to use the comp eng weld in connectors or build your own too (Custom connectors are MUCH cleaner) but the frame rails are nice.

Chris, since you used the rails, how did you attach the front point of the lower suspension arms? I have seen no pictures of that?

Again, Nice car!

Lead.

Hey everyone we are at the Iowa Goodguys show and I have to say that I really appreciate all the comments good and bad.I look forward to meeting any and all of you at these two shows "Iowa and Ohio" Everyone keep this in mind, I am not only the builder but I am also the photographer so it would have been very easy for me to shoot this car at an very different angle to hide the exhaust, given the car a false representation. I did not do this because it is what it is and we are very happy with the way it turned out and no matter who the builder or what the build there is always more that could have been done than there is money to pay for. I will post some shots of the first show tomorrow. Thanks

Lead.

I will post pics when we return to show you what we did. Its all custom and clean.

Anybody willing to drag that car from AZ to OH at nearly $5/gallon deserves a handshake and a thank you for making the show that much better. It's already an incredible show and picking a Top 5 will be extremely difficult regardless of who you think should win and making a commitment to bring another high end car all the way across the Country for us to look at deserves respect no matter what he brings home on Sunday.I will be by Friday for my handshake and to say thank you. I suggest more guys with and especially guys without cars shooting for the Top 5 do the same because the show wouldn't be as great without cars and committed people like this.Drive carefully, guysLook forward to meeting you its been a long haul and the gas hurts. But we made it to the first show and are all set up now. I will post some shots tomorrow

It is what it is and this is what the Client wanted, he really could care less what you or I think. He wanted the car built a certain way and we did what he asked us to do. No more no less and this is the out come like it or not.

Do I wish we could have done things a different way sure but I am still happy with the way it turned out. I am very happy with it because he is happy with it and told us we did better than expected. What more can I ask for?

I have had a chance to see this car in person. I can say that it is an incredible car and I would love to have it. When the air ride is up at drive height the headers have a lot of clearance. The paint and fit and finish is stellar. The shop is also stellar. Chris has worked hard and has a came a long way since I first met him about ten years ago. Congrates

I did not do this because it is what it is and we are very happy with the way it turned out and no matter who the builder or what the build there is always more that could have been done than there is money to pay for.

Some people, for some reason think that every project has an open check book. People are so used to seeing these uber high dollar cars, that a really nice car that is not perfect, gets scrutinized for not having certain things done to it, because of the expectation that is out there. I blame all the one week, 500 man, tv build shows for a lot of this perception.

Man, the car looks great. BUt, I think a little more black would have been better. :unibrow:

If we could do that we could all turn cars in a few weeks but I think the overall project would suffer just a little I think.

As you can see we hit some nice weather in Iowa, we hit two large storms on the way and it took us about 22 hours to get to the first stop. Goodguys Iowa and as you can imagine the Gas prices were just awesome. It took me 4 tanks to get to the first show and I have another state to go and then the nice long drive home.

So today at the first show with the Blazer and Camaro they both won something. The Blazer got nominated for Truck of the year and the Camaro won the Pros Pick . I think that is a good turn out for the first competition and there were some nice cars there. I will post pics tomorrow when I get them downloaded.

The weather here is just great now, I guess a few weeks ago the area we are staying in was over 3 feet in water downtown. Sand bags everywhere so you know it was bad. The river by our hotel is way up almost to the edge but they say it is going down now. Cool town and the people are great

Well I have to say that it was a great year out at Columbus and yes we did have a ton of fun. The fact that we did not win anything is OK and that is the way it goes. I have a ton more pictures I will post up here from our long haul home with the final shots of the car so everyone can see the car completed. This one will be delivered in the next few weeks and its on to some new builds.

We are working on the following

1970 Chevelle SS
1966 Mustang GT
1970 Nova SS
1965 Vette
1969 Camaro another project
1955 Chevy
1968 Dodge Charger

and a few others that we are not ready to show yet.

I would like to thank all that we met out at the show and hope to see you guys around at more shows. Good luck to all :lateral:

Hi Chris
Our GOODGUY'S SHOW is in September. Man it would be great to see you there. The show is at the Chicagoland speedway, last year was the first and it was awsome!! The turnout was unreal, people were still comming in as the show was closing. We also have our Super Chevy at the Route 66 drag strip(with is next to the speedway) that I think is in August.Goodguy's would be the one if you could make it. I no it cost a fortune to make these trips, but it would be nice to see your cars and you there!!
