600 flywheel HP LS1, can a 4L60E be built to handle it? What vehicles does the 4L80E come in and how hard is it to find one?

I have had luck with www.bowtieoverdrives.com a couple of times, one of them on a 750 Hp turbo LT4.. (pictures in a thread called wither turbo project)

and i got screwed by a transmission company in NY that built me a GM/AOD hybrid tranny... (tranny was fine, but he didnt send any of the 1200 dollars of extra parts i ordered... )

A 4l80E can handle the power stock and a 4L60 will need to be built up. I would prefer the 60 because of the weight, form factor and the fact that t can be easily upgraded to be as good or better than a stock 80. a good 4l60 would probably include:

5 pinion rear planet.
Z-pack 3/4 clutches.
Upgraded bands
Billet 2nd servo
Transgo HP reprogramming kit
Double cage forward input sprag
Good external trans cooler

Thats about $300-375 in parts. Take a look at websites like at http://www.transmissioncenter.net/4l60e.htm or http://www.transmissioncenter.net/4L80E.htm and look at what upgraded parts they use and mimic. Transmission builds are not that difficult and good cores are everywhere. If you go with a 4l80E try and get a 96 or higher. There are mostly found in trucks.

A stock 4L80E is good for 700-800 easy, even though they aren't rated that high. It takes a pretty built 4L60/65 to match. Doable, yes, but not at that price unless you can do all the mods yourself.

I paid $2500 for a 4L65 that could handle a 1000 hp twin turbo LS2. Trans worked great, but cheap it was not.

80E will also soak up much more HP than the 60E.. And its more bulky and weighs more.

true, but most of the loss is in using the stock 4L80E converter which is very heavy. Swap to an aftermarket converter and the loss is much less. Very few people would be running the stock converter anyway.
