View Full Version : Let's see some GOLD!

In the continuing quest toward a decision on paint color for my 69 Camaro, I am back full circle, to Gold as a color.
My car's factory color was Olympic Gold (which is kind of a greenish/"fools gold" color, that I really don't like much) and it received a repaint later on in it's life, in some unknown gold shade (pic attached, before I tore the car down).
It's since been stripped buck-nekkid, media blasted, etc, up on the rotiss now (or I should say...still)... I'm currently finishing the Qlink install, etc.
I do like golds such as that on Steve Chryssos' 68 as well as the "Aztec gold" that Chrysler corp has used on the plymouth prowler and even on some "special edition" PT cruisers. I am only interested in doing a two-stage (basecoat/clearcoat) process, as I will be painting the car myself at home... I'm not interested in Kandys due to difficulty of repair; this is a street car that I plan to drive hard and keep in the family forever, so repairs are a certain eventuality...
The car will most likely have some form of stripes, in black. Car will be converted to RS w/endura bumper.
So, if you have any pics and hopefully info (color names, codes, etc) on particular gold colors that really "pop", then lets see them!
Thanks.... and Happy Thanksgiving! -Rob

but in 1980 the Trans Am had a nice gold. A friend had the car...it was a turbo and I loved it.
Are you looking for a dark or light colored gold?
The Chrysler one you mentioned is good and there's a good Honda one that came on Civics just a few years ago.

I'll get the pics up of my 'gold'; it's 1968 April Gold- the green / gold metallic. In the sun it looks more gold than green, but it's beautiful under the lights. I get lots of compliments (and, truthfully, a bunch of WTF?s).
Pics in a bit when I get back on my pic server...

Wow guys, thanks! (Went away for Thanksgiving and came back to all these great responses!) :lateral:
Steve, the War Bonnet Yellow is definately a contender and one that I remember but didn't know the name of... I should elaborate that I have already been through the "copper-orange/tangerine/bronze" thing, but I'm backing away from those colors because of the fact that they are becoming kind of common. Gionni, your Road Runner looks just beautiful in that browish-gold color...

That 54 is indeed sweet. I dig the wheels, as well. Perfect for that car.

OHC I've been following your build for a long while. I think it's great that you have stayed with the OHC motor. I am leaning towards a more "caramel" gold and, so far, the 71 Vette War Bonnet Yellow is in the lead...Rogue- Neat car you've got there. Exactly what my existing paint is (Olympic Gold)...but looking for a change.
These are two awesome colors... '71 Cadillac stuff...

I used factory '67 Chevy colors on mine. Both the gold and the cream are stock for the car- just laid out differently.
The gold looks like the other late '60s-era GM gold colors shown on the thread- go figure! LOL!
Mine was called 'Harvest Gold' I think.

Hey Tony, <begin thick NY accent> ....Even tho I'm originally from New Yawk, freakin, born an raised on Lawn Guylan' even, I don' wear no gold chains, an what not...and I never even owned no IROC...<end thick NY accent>:D
Scott I've seen your 67 around, one of my favorite wagons. Great looking combo and the color break makes the car look even longer/lower...I like the super-stock style headlight deal...righteous. -Rob

Kevin thanks for reminding me about the Caddy colors, I will have to look into some of those as well. My mom always had Caddys, one in particular that was my favorite was her 67 Coupe DeVille, silver on black, with leather interior. in the days before products like ArmorAll came along, she used to clean/polish all the leather with furniture polish (!) and man, as a little kid, riding in the back, I had to hang onto the seat hump/middle armrest thing for dear life when she would toss that big boat around corners (mom had a heavy foot). (Seatbelts??)
I remember one time I fell asleep back there on a long trip and on the exit ramp from the expressway, with the seat hump/middle armrest thing up, I slid across and whacked my head on the armrest so hard that the ashtray insert popped out.
That is frickin' funny! My dad used to buy used Caddies when I was a kid, so I know exactly what you're talking about! I used to slide around in the back of a '65, '67, and a '73... no child seats, just an acre of heavily padded vinyl and paisley print cloth!

Rob-
Thanks; I'm actually working with a few manufacturers to offer up parts for the TB / Atlas engines. Those are old pics- I really need to get some updated stuff with the chassis about done.

LOL Kevin, those caddys represent some of my best childhood memories. I remember as a kid how, at the "Service Station" my Mom would sometimes ask the attendant to check the oil. On those cars, with the hood up you could see a lot of the engine compartment, so I used to watch the guy like a hawk (typically it was a bored teenager) while he would check the oil and about half the time they would kind of just "go through the motions", ie, they would just pull the dipstick and look at it. One time when I was like 6, I got out of the car and climbed up the front bumper and showed the guy how to do it the right way as I'd been taught watching my Dad (pull the dipstick, wipe, re-insert, pull, read.) Since my parents knew the owners of the service station, it became a running joke...

...i agree that the bmw gold on the m3 is nice, but i remember a gold from acura that came out on the cl coupes for like 2 years, it had good pop-strope and russ stevenson lovingly referred to it as "compton gold", and suggested to break it up with ivory stripes...i laughed at first and then realized how different that would be especially since the lines of the camaro are much edgier and flatter than them new fangle cars...ps when i was in elementary school my mom had a buick riviera which ironically was gold with some slippery ass seats too...talk about coincidence :o)

Steve, Just as an FYI, One thing I've noticed in checking out this particular GM color on a bunch of corvettes is that it typically looks quite different than the pic you posted; Take a look at the color on this War Bonnet Yellow LS5, 1971 Survivor car (Original Paint). The color is more of a "lemony" yellow, whereas the pic you posted is more of a "caramel" yellow...I remember having a banana-seat bike (I think it was a Ross Apollo) in this color! LOL

Yep, that could have a lot to do with it...I'm going to get a pint and shoot an old fender just to see.
