I'm having the Ford sealed bearings pressed onto the axles tomorrow.

I remember reading something from a BGH post saying to take the O ring off the outside of the bearing before putting the axle/bearing combo into the housing. There is an inner seal that keeps the gear oil inside, so it looks like it's there to keep dirt out?

Has anyone done this with success?

I know about the inner seal and where it goes.
I'm talking about the large Ford bearing, it has a thin O ring around the outer circumference.
Has anyone left the O ring off?

probably a bit late on this one but, you need the o-ring to seal the bearing to the housing or it will leak oil around the bearing.

I can understand leaving the O-ring off for mock up purpose... ONLY !

I am sure ford engineers did their job by desinging the o-ring in the bearing. So keep it there.

The rear end has been in for awhile now with no leaks. I used both the inner axle seal and th O ring on the bearing itself with a smear of RTV.

All is well, I just asked due to a post from Big Gear Head on the PT forum about not using it. Anyway

The smear of RTV is the trick.
