Why can't anything just go easy???

Started the car two days ago and it fired right up with 50 lbs of fuel pressure. All is good.

Today there's only 20 lbs on the gauge and on the mech gauge on my fuel rail.

BOS checks the voltage, all seems good. They call me and I suggest taking off the cap to make sure there's not a vent issue.

They look in the can (past the flapper) and gas streaming.. that aint right.

Pull the cover and voila! It seems the plastic hose from the 72psi Bosch pump to the outlet had burst and another area showed stress. WTF?

I called Fuel Safe and sent them some pics, they were at a loss as to why it would have burst like that. The tech is running this up to the pres and will call me in the morning.

So, defective line? Maybe the filter in the lid developed a blockage (even though it's all new).. space aliens?

Anyways, can't anything ever go smoothly. Oh, the sliders for the Recaro seats.. three left sliders and one right. lol

I swear, you really can't make this stuff up. :rofl:

So, theories on why the hose burst? My first instinct is to just replace it with a stronger tube but that doesn't address why this one broke.

That hose doesn't look all that strong. I'm surprised it didn't come with something a bit stronger, considering it's a fuel line.

in addition to the obvious weakness in appearance I wonder if it has an issue with the alcohol or other additives we have in our gas. I know Aeromotive had to re-do their electric pump motor magnets due to the California gas additives eating the glue that held the magnets in place. They weren't having this problem in other states.

Gas was in the tank for two days.. and started maybe twice. :shrug:

Maybe the wrong tubing for that pump? It's a 79psi pump so what's the max pressure it could have put on the tubing.. 110??

Hopefully they will have some answers in the morning. Just part of the process although it's a bit annoying.

I was suprised as well.. I expected a super beefy line.. it's an armored box with a kevlar lining.. and a .10$ hose.. lol..

Fuel Safe did take this very seriously though, I'm sure they will do the right thing.

I'm sure you can get a good line for dirt cheap. I hope they don't send that line out again. From the picture, it just looks like a weird flimsy line. I have never seen that in use for a fuel line before. Maybe I'm wrong though.

This is a rather common problem, many members from other forums have had the same issue with different tanks and lines. I have had the same thing happen to me and have read many threads of the same issues but with different manufacturers. At least you quickly found the problem.

thats a typical looking hose of many gm in tank pumps, maybe its a bad batch of hose, or something but get it done!!!
at least taking the sending unit out is easy enough!!

What gets me is you can drive up to a car lot and drive off with a car and barely ever have any problems. You build a custom car with "custom" superior parts, and have nothing but little issues! It's always the accessories or little things that come up and piss us off. :mad:

That doesn't look like the hose we've been using in a Fuel Safe cell. The stuff we get looks like some type of aircraft push-lok hose made by Parker and it's rated at 250PSI.

Maybe a thin wall durring manufacturing that was missed on the QC check. I wonder where I could buy this line locally or get it FAST?

It looks like they were using the wrong tube for the application. My guess is that the fuel ate away at it, weakening the strength and the high pressure made it explode. Good find...

PS... this is why you should trailer it to SEMA in an armor enclosed trailer designed by NASA that is indestructable to their superior tracker beams and x-ray vision. :thumbsup:

I'd bet that hose was made at 4:59 on a Friday before a 3 day weekend.

I built my own fuel cell for my Mustang. That assembly looks just like mine. Except for the blown hose, of course.

I was going to say that, it sure looks like the hose GM put in to the F-body pumpunit. But that doesn't mean it is the same kind of hose.

Obviously it was too much for Fuel Safe to spend to fix thier tank.. lol


Fuel Safe called this morning.. they don't have a clue. They said the hose was teflon but it doesn't seem like any teflon I've ever seen. They are sending me new fittings and a retrofit hose. It's sort of a pain to adapt to the pump, but it should fix the problem.

I asked if they could overnight the parts since the car needs to move. They said "No".. that the owner said he would not expidite the parts more than UPS ground even though it was clearly thier fault. I'm happy they are sending the parts but was a bit ticked that they wouldn't rush the parts considering the situation and the fact that the tank was nearly $2000. Their customer service score was a C+ on this. The Tech guy was great and did his part very well.

I paid the charge to have the replacement parts overnighted.

The hose sure seems wimpy in person. and the blown part looks melted but I think it just expanded like a balloon and popped. Maybe a defective hose. Anyways, should have it fixed tomorrow.

That type of line is very common in late model fuel pump modules. Even ones that run fairly high pressures.

So they charged my $58 to ship the parts (To fix thier screw up) and they didn't send sufficient parts for a fix.

They sent me the parts to convert the fuel pump to an 8AN exit and the corresponding size push lock hose. They sent me 2 feet of push lock hose...


BUT they didn't send me a fitting for the top and it's a 6AN sized push lock fitting. :rolleyes:


Why didn't they just build the f'ing system with #8 the first time? Especially since I specifically asked for a #8 exit out the lid.


We ended up getting the right Gates hose (for EFI) and attached it using two hose clamps. Later I will buy ANOTHER #8 90-degree push lock fitting and make the system how Fuel Safe should have built it in the first place.

that sucks, but that is normal to offer reg ground for warranty, dse did that to me with a junk koni coil over, i paid next day, but at least i got the right part..
