Los Alamitos, CA, September 29, 2008 - At most trade shows you will find a booth filled with merchandise, in the case of the SEMA Show it’s usually the latest and greatest in automotive parts with a few cars or other vehicles offered up as eye candy. But how about something completely different? This year at the 2008 SEMA Show, Cone Engineering presents The Art of the Fabricator.
This theme celebrates the artistry of the fabricator and the works that come out of their labor. Featured in the Cone Engineering booth (Hot Rod Alley, #23475) at this year’s SEMA Show (Nov. 4th – 7th), will be the work of several prominent engine, exhaust, and Hot Rod builders. Visitors to the booth will get the chance to see up close how Megs Exhaust Builders Warehouse components actually come to life in real world examples. You’ll have the opportunity to meet the builders, discuss their work and find out how these components simplified their fabrication work. Also part of the exhibit will be the automotive artwork of painter Larry Gardinier. To commemorate this event, a special limited-edition Gardinier print was commissioned as a gift for our visitors.
Fabricators currently scheduled to attend/display:
American Racing Headers, Dodge V-10 Viper
Bruning Auto Design, Hemi Twin Turbo
Chad’s Custom Headers, Big Block Chevy, and Ford Model A
Fuller Hot Rods, Buell Twin
Hollywood Hot Rods, Ardun Flathead, and vintage style Small Block Chevy
JSE Racing, Turbocharged Air-cooled VW Dragster Engine
Megs Exhaust Builders Warehouse, Flathead V8
Revolution Mini Works, Mini Cooper
Cone Engineering was established in 1970 to provide pre-fabricated exhaust components to automotive and motorcycle companies, both OEM and aftermarket. Cone Engineering is also known for the Megs brand of exhaust tips that are very popular in the hot rod and street rod market.
In 2006, Megs Exhaust Builders Warehouse was created to provide fabricators with products that had previously been available to only large manufacturers. These products are designed to speed production, reduce costs and generally make the fabricator’s life easier! We produce a number of items you will find nowhere else, both in quality and design. Our goal is to be your source for fabricated exhaust products. We are constantly adding additional products to give a full range of items needed to create custom designed and built exhaust systems.
Our constantly evolving and expanding website helps Megs Exhaust Builders Warehouse customers locate the components they need for their projects. New products are continually being added to expand the depth and breadth of our offerings. To see our current products and learn more about us visit our website at www.coneeng.com.
Cone Engineering, Inc. is a leader in offering custom, semi-custom, and private-label manufacturing options for fabricated exhaust components.

The clutch and pressure plate package arrived from Centerforce and it is a work of art! The Centerforce crew went above and beyond and definitely exceeded our expectations by building a custom clutch package to work with the Challenger's unique drive line setup. They mocked up the bellhousing and flywheel and Tilton Release Bearing, built a DFX clutch disc to work with the high gear shaft spline, and balanced the LMC pressure plate to the flywheel.

E Tikit Challenger
1970 DODGE CHALLENGER 426 C.I.D. HEMI STROKER
(LMC PRESSURE PLATE AND DFX DISC)
Centerforce® is proud to feature their LMC and DFX series clutch systems on the Bruning Auto Design “E Tikit” Challenger. Come see the engine and driveline from this twin turbocharged 6.1L HEMI at the Cone Engineering Booth #23475 during the 2008 SEMA Show. “E Tikit” will be a custom built 1970 Challenger that utilizes a Centerforce 10.5” Light Metal Clutch (LMC) Pressure Plate and DFX Friction Disc. The LMC Pressure Plate features a CAD/CAM designed, aircraft quality, billet aluminum pressure plate that utilizes the Centerforce patented Ball Bearing fulcrum technology. This system, coupled with the famed Centerforce centrifugal weight system works to increase the Pressure Plate clamping force while maintaining an easy pedal effort. The Centerforce DFX disc is a high friction, sprung hub performance disc that utilizes cerametallic friction material for a smooth engagement and excellent holding capacity. The factory 6.1 HEMI coils are mounted on top of the valve covers and covered by valve cover covers. Not a huge "cover" fan, plus the turbo headers come up and forward next to the valve covers, so the coils were relocated.
The 8.5 mm spark plug wires are protected with DEI's "Protect-A-Wire" which are made from a high temperature resistant fiberglass composite materialand will withstand 1200*F direct continuous heat.

Packaging 8 twin plug coils under the intake was fun... The coils and plug wires are below the intake flange so that they do not interfere with the fuel rails and injectors. A lot more clearance with the stock style intake...
Tim built a tray to hold the coils mounted by stand-offs using the MDS plug mounting tabs.

I know you guys can build anything but if we have a hinge that will get you started let me know and we will get a set out to you for testing. I see you had the stock hinges on there and I am sure you guys are going to rebuild that section. We have some Dodge stuff that you might be able to adapt over and make work.
Just some thoughts if you are going to build your own that is cool and I totally understand.

On to the accessory drive - or lack there of. Space is at a premium, so each component has a small window for fitment. The other challenge was fabricating brackets that allow for pump removal without disassembling half the car.
The brackets for the A/C pump are removable on the top and bottom so that the pump can be removed without pulling the engine and or removing the oil lines from the block off adapter.
The first production Meziere electric late model hemi water pump also arrived.

Ididit built a custom aluminum tilt column for the Challenger but retained some of the Mopar styling cues - such as the column adapter. Went with a brushed aluminum finish with clear powder coat. Ididit also sent us their column drop bracket, floor mount, and Borgeson u-joint.

I'll second that thought. Are these mounting options only viable due to the fact that you are solid mounting the engine? I would think that if it weren't any movement would cause belt issues.
Musclerodz
02-26-2009, 01:21 PM
I am guessing the motor is solid mounted? It would have to be since accessories are bolted to the frame.
wiedemab
02-26-2009, 01:31 PM
Yeah, I know they have the engine solid mounted. I didn't think the frame mounted access. would work if it wasn't though. I think you are supporting the fact that it wouldn't.
BTW- This project continues to amaze me!

I thought the big aluminum motor plate would of given away the fact that it was solid mounted.
Yeah, I realized that they are solid mounting the engine in this car. I guess my wording was ambiguous.
Has anyone frame mounted accessories successfully with an engine that is not solid mounted?
I realize that this isn't directly related to this project, just a question that popped into my head, so I should probably have save this thread from the derailment that inadvertently caused.

But a Cog belt doesn not need the tension that a Serp belt does.
true but when the motor moves away it tightens. Its going to go thru alot of cogs belts. I did a cog set up with a vortech unit on an LT4 made 680rwhp but it would chew cog belts. its not really made for a street car, especially the narrow cog belts like that.
byndbad914
02-26-2009, 08:32 PM
even with a cog belt you need the engine solid mounted - I have my dry sump pump attached directly to the frame in my race car and the engine solid mounted, but also have the alternator with a simple V-belt mounted.
Agreed that a cog belt runs pretty loose (I slip my 225mm belt on and off by hand to prime the engine with a drill) and serp belts need tension, but if it is solid mounted it will work no problem (there will be enough motion in the tensioner if the belt length is chosen wisely), but in no way would I soft mount an engine with frame mounted accessories, regardless of belt system.
Can sorta see the setup in this pic, at least of the alternator. It is pretty common to chassis mount accessories to make removal and so forth easier and whenever real estate is at a premium. See it all the time in off-road vehicles. Tim has clearly built a ton of sweet cars so nothing new to him
Always amazed with this build!

This cars is like the Ridler of pro-touring. Keep up the great work and thanks for the updates.

I hope it makes it to colombus this build is awesome put by so many others watching the thread maybe hes painting it right now and will have it ready for the colombus show i really want to see it in person the great part is that you can look at the finished product and know every little detail was hand built one off now thats saying something and the great thing about following builds on here is the shops and individuals that post them for all of us to see and draw inspiration from

Well, I read all the way through this looking for an answer to just one question-havent seen it yet.
Im extremely interested in using a drive shaft instead of a torque tube in a build Im embarking on (the corvette wheelbase doesnt even come close to the one on my ride). So Im wondering on how you guys hooked it all up. Were all the parts custom fabbed or are they available aftermarket? Any pics? Also, most of the pics in the latter part of this thread arent showing up.
Thanks,
Corey

Not just you -- sometimes they move the photos off the host (like Photobucket) or let the account "lapse" then the links no longer work.

Marty doesn't love me anymore!! :_paranoid
The pics uploaded via imageshack should still be ok, but I need to go through and try and fix pictures that are missing now. It's all Marty's fault LOL
edit - fixed the missing pictures

I think Tim has been hanging out with Greg too much, he thinks he is retired.
Other projects have slowed this project down. However things are starting to move forward again.
The back of the car has been laser scanned to design some one off stuff.

Long overdue updates- Tim had Forgeline widen the front wheels to accommodate a 275 tire, pedal assembly in the works, wheel tubs, and "custom" exhaust and mufflers.
exhaust teaser pics - plenty of clearance, and all tucked up inside the frame...

Last time I talked to Tim he hadn't done much to the car
He picked up a 1st gen firebird that he was going to "tinker with" but keep a driver.... And you know how that goes...:)... So he's been working on that alot
I think between full time work, side jobs, family life, some health issues and a not having a car to enjoy driving, the challenger got put on hold for now

I agree. This thing was headed for a SMOTY contender spot at the time. I wish it would get finished.

Tim still has the car, but last I heard the project was still DOA.....just lots of time and $$ to finish and Tim has other things going on in his life that are priorities....
