View Full Version : Chevelle chassis is going back together

Things are starting to roll now. The chassis is almost completed. Got to get a longer driveshaft as the LS2 is about 1.5" further forward than the old small block with the ATS mounts.. But the passenger head is very close to the firewall, so it could not have gone further rearward.

stuck the engine in. This gives you a good idea of the clearance from the Nelson turbo headers; lots of room for the downpipes.

Looks great. I love the detail, looks very clean and simple (if you can say that about a TT car)

Personally, I will always go auto on a forced induction car, especially when its a large car.

As my first football coach used to say(in 1967):

"Great Gooney GOOGOO, man"

I have no idea what it meant, but he only ever said it if he was impressed.

That is sweet(great gooney googoo, jody).

actually the original wheels was something I did not like so was going for a vintage look. However, I am likely going with a second set of modern wheels now. :willy:

I loved the car the first go around but this is even better. More 'plain-jane' factory looking w/some suspension tweaks & drivetrain mods.

I remember during the build of the car that the rear frame clip was narrowed several inches (2" each side?). Did the rear end stay the same dimensions as factory or is that a shorter custom rear sway bar?

My car is the late model version (79 Malibu) & it even has a similar tan/peanut shell color.

thanks Jim. Yeah, it's 22000 s.f. of concrete out there, and a neighbor and I poured half of it ourselves. Lot of work, but much nicer than the dirt/gravel we had.

Jodi,

frame looks awesome. I want to either buy an aftermarket chassis for my 67 or improve the existing chassis. What are you doing to improve the frame on your 65 to make it more rigid. I am really courious to know. Maybe your experience can save me 20k.... Thanks.

Blessings,

since the car was built by Mark Stielow who is a suspension engineer, other than powdercoating the pieces I pretty much left it as he had it. I did add braces to the upper control arm points on the frame, and many guys box in the frame for added rigidity. There is a welded in rollbar which ties the body up some which also helps in the overall package.

That engine looks killer! I'm not a carbon fiber expert, but do you know if they will take the heat put off by those headers? Maybe some heat shields on the backside of the headers would be nice.

Thanks Tony. That is a question I had, and Jon has a newer resin out for the covers that takes higher heat and I will be swapping to them. I had also planned a heat shield or wrapping the pipes in that area also.

wow, nice shot of the engine... but you will need to add some heat shielding for the upper controll arms or the bushings will get roasted!!
