In a way its a plus and negative for her, IMHO.

But we do have to remember how old it is before it actually aires. So for all we know she might have left them by now..

Duane is an asshat. Plain and simple.

Liz can hold her own. I think she is intelligent enough to not bite off more than she can chew on her own... and in that environment, it is how you survive. Its not about slamming things together and she knows what quality building is about.

For those of you that dont know much about her... check out her web page: http://milesspeed.com/

Smart, witty, drives a real hot rod and is quite the little hottie... what more could you ask for??

(Liz if you read this... you already know what Im gonna say... you need to give Duane a little up with a dead blow hammer.) Actually... I hope your the one who puts him in his place.

Yes he does. Saun goes by the screen name TwinSting. Great guy. He gave away a set of Mickey Thompson tires at our SEMA party last fall.

This is the first I've heard of her and I was impressed. Not necessarily because she's a girl but more because of her work ethic, enthusiasm, quick wit, knowledge/experience with cars, obvious intelligence, willingness to learn and ability to adapt so quickly in a "hostile" environment. She really has her S*** together it seems. I think it's rare to see that in someone that young (or anyone for that matter). And Daaayyyyum....that was a sweet burnout!

Al seemed to be impressed with her as well. I think he's a pretty accurate gauge of the quality of his coworkers. Everyone he "rolled his eyes at" in the past had a short employment there for whatever reason.

Good for her!

Im also only 21 and worked in a Hot Rod Shop at one time. The funny thing to me is that I feel that I have just as much knowledge and determination as she does, but because I am a guy, I wasnt "priased" for it, nor was I givin a partner with more experience to shadow and work with. I was thrown out there, and when I accomplished something, there was no surprise in anyones face. I see a double standard here.

Humility. And I sure hope she has it.

Personally I am turned off by the whole sponsorship thing and trying to sell herself out there. If you love hot rods then find a job or start a business that involves them and have fun with it. The minute you start making moves to gain noteriety for yourself and become a celebrity, then I think you've lost sight of what this hobby is all about.

Someone at Woodward told me that she had hired an agent for herself.

Nope, think like a TV producer who counts the numbers so they get advertisers - she'll be there a while, unless a bigger deal comes along for her - and guess what - they will do another Charlie episode and drama queen the entire show(s) around it.

Honestly, how the hell would Scott have sponsored her? I know she asked for it & what not. I am not 100% sure on how it all went down, but what does Scott have to offer her? Not trying to be a smart-ass or what not, other than saying "I am sponsored by Lateral-G.net".

I mean if she wanted money to put a "Lateral-g.net" sticker on her car & website, thats complete BS. Because, quite frankly, I'll put one on my car for free.

Never knew who she was but she does get a lot pf press. She has been in a lot of mags and small clips on shows.

As far as trying to sell herself with an agent I say smart move. How many chicks know what she does and add her age and ok looks and I think she is very much what the public will want.

I can't stand when guys go off on the person that is smart enough to make moves to get ahead. If she asked for a sponsor so what, how many builds on here lists all their free parts? She is smart to position herself where she is. Everybody who is complaining sit back and don't make any moves yourself and watch her blow up into her own show thinking damn if I had only??? Sucks being rich and famous.

If she wants to be rich and famous, then by all means go for it. It is after all a free country. But I thnk she's costing herself respect amongst her peers in this hobby if she ever wants to be in the modification business. If all she's after is to be a TV host then that's fine. But don't ever expect me or anyone else to mention her in the same breath as people like Foose, Shine, and yeah...Coddington.

Sorry....I ain't jumping on that bandwagon.

I don't mean to jump down her throat, I'm sure she's a nice person who's passionate about the hobby. And yeah...I welcome female members into this hobby...I think that's great. I just don't like attention seekers. Never have...never will.

Sorry but I don't agree AT ALL!! It's one thing to try and get parts for your ride it's another to say " I'm a celebrity and if you want me to stay pay me!" 70two nova,
Are you refering to your time at Hot Rods by Dean? Determination generally lasts longer than 3 or 4 weeks, you should have given yourself more time to show what skills you have, and learn from people who are journeyman craftsman who have been around this trade long time. I don't believe I watched her getting praised on the show, any comments from the guys on the show were directed to the viewers of the show. Sometimes when you are starting out in a trade, you feel proud of your "accomplishments", but after 10 or 20 years in the trade you look back at an item you might of made and laugh, thinking man "what was I thinking". I'm not bagging on you, just don't see a double standard here, I would think it would be much more difficult for a female to work in a shop full of guys. Most shops are just looking for an employee that shows up for work everyday, is drug free, and wants to learn. Not easy fo find!! good luck to her, I just like fact that there seemed to be less drama with her on the show, not the case with the girls on Hardshine!!

Jack,
Yes I was referring to Dean's, dont get me wrong, all the guys there were more than helpful, I really did enjoy working there, it just turned out that at the time it just wasnt going to work out financially/logistically. I did learn a lot in the short time I was there, and was not looking to be "priased" by any means even though I may not have been up to Dean's standards although I tried my best, I just notice that young females generally are not expected to know much, therefore resulting in more "praise" when they do. Either way, the fact that I did leave shouldnt have anything to do with my skills/personality but rather my personal situation....thats life I guess.

Nobody said she was a bad person. The only criticism some of us have is that she's making a choice that's going to cost her a lot of credibility in the long run.

If you're a woman breaking into the hot rodding business and you want to do it right, reference someone like Stacy Tucker. Now there's a woman I'll take my hat off to. Got TONS of respect for her.

Guys zero argument wanted but I have to ask why does everybody just hate any of the builders on TV? Sometimes I go on the Jalopy Journal and man they can add 5 pages in about 10 minutes if somebody even mentions Boyd. I just do not get it. I do admit I have no idea how she went about getting sponsored or anything so I can be dead wrong if she pulled a jackass move.

I just see a 21 year old trying to get ahead. At 21 I would have killed for an oppurtunity like that. Unlike a lot of others I think she cam across fairly well on the show so far. I honestly do not think she is that hot and agree the woman thing shouldn't be a factor but it is. How many other woman hold their own like that??

I know that now that I stuck up for her there will be an upcoming episode where she does something rediculous involving Boyd and some sort of power tool to make me look stupid.

I think most of the guys here just dont understand what its like to be 20 and broke... and be influenced by the cars we see in popular hotrodding and other large magazines that just the paint job alone is worth more than any engine we can put together for our cars. We cant all send our cars to Dse or other shops and have THEM build our cars, some of us actually have to do all our own work in the little time we have when were not working at our crappy jobs. So what if she asked for sponsorship, she got turned down... thats it get over it, shes out their to make that money just like we all are, u know how expensive life is now nothing wrong with some extra cash here and their . i think you older guys forgot what its like to spend huge amounts of the little time/money you have on your car when ur young just so on weekends you can take out that primered car and cruise the town with ur friends and not have a care in the world because your in your badass car.

Wow, I never thought about that, We were all born with silver spoons in our mouths. It must suck to be 20 and broke.

We are all trying to make that money, But if she is 20 how much can she really know, give her 10 years and then she might know something. She just graduated from wyotech and worked at Dominator for a short period of time and now works at Boyds, which I think is staged for the show.

If they really want to make that show quality, they will follow Al around and watch him work or some of the other guys who get very little air time, cuz they work. I would hire that Al guy or some of the quiet guys any day, let the drama queens create the drama.

When I met Liz at SEMA last year, she was very nice to talk to, very friendly and humble. I was impressed, she was a very genuine person and I had a great first impression. Fast forward a few months and the talk about the sponsorship deal, it really struck me as odd (and still does), it was completely out of the blue and not anything that I had expected from her. Between that and her talking about getting an agent and getting on TV, it almost seemed like she was being 'coached' into the direction she's taking. If she becomes successful from the steps she's taking, more power to her. We all have to do what we feel is best for ourselves and our family.

I guess what it boils down to is that it just seems like she had an agenda to get publicity, not be just one of the guys.

On the flip side, she knows what she wants and is working towards that goal. That's admirable for a 20 year old.

it almost seemed like she was being 'coached' into the direction she's taking.

Perhaps this is true and some executive from TLC got her letters and said "we have just the spot for you".

I haven’t seen more than maybe 3 episodes of that show and the one I saw in its entirely was when they had some intern guy who they sent out to spray paint some bracket or something. Duane told him to shake the can until the ball stopped making noise and thats when you know the paint in the can was mixed. This kid shook that can for something like 2 hours. I nearly pissed myself.
Now come on... would you send an intern to do that for 2 hrs when you can have him do something else that it more efficient? Or better yet who the heck is so gullible to do that?
From the little I've seen and heard about, I'd say it’s ALL staged.

If they really want to make that show quality, they will follow Al around and watch him work or some of the other guys who get very little air time, cuz they work. I would hire that Al guy or some of the quiet guys any day, let the drama queens create the drama.

Rodger

I've been around some guys that work really hard.. and you are right, they just keep their mouths closed and their eyes focused on the task at hand. If it wasn't for the guys that work hard, Boyds or any of those places wouldn't be around for long. Without at least one or two of those guys around you get shoddy work. Chip's a great guy and all... but he's got to have some hard working guys behind him with handfuls of talent. American Hotrod is all staged, how many times has any of those hard working guys left (not the smartass camera hogs) and amazingly been back... talented guys like that would not have been back if they really left.

Here's how I look at it...

"If she were a he would we even be having this conversation?"

She's talked about not for her skill, but because she's a novelty. That isn't to say she isn't skilled (she is) but it's nothing groundbreaking. I wish her all the best, but I see the buzz for what it is.. marketing. She's a gearhead with more skill than some on here and less than others.

"If she were a he would we even be having this conversation?"
If she was a 20 year old guy hiring an agent and trolling for sponsorships from guys like Scott.....absolutely we'd be having this conversation. Gender would make no difference.

Look, here's my arguement in a nutshell. Hot Rodding has always been a man’s domain. It’s been dominated by men, that fact you can’t argue. Whenever a woman steps into a man’s domain whether it be Basketball, Football, Baseball, or whatever…she’s immediately put under a microscope and every move she makes is scrutinized. I wish it wasn’t like that, but it is. You make one wrong move and suddenly all your credibility goes down the drain. Men are less forgiving of women then they are of other men…it’s unfortunate, but that’s just how it is. Look at Michelle Wie the LPGA golfer who tried to enter a PGA tournament. As soon as she set foot on the turf every eyeball on that course was on her. And of course every mistake she made was amplified. Liz Miles has a chance to make some serious noise in this hobby and maybe raise awareness to other woman who aspire to participate in it. The Hot Rod feature was a great start and hell getting on AHR is awesome for her too. But when you start doing stuff like hiring an agent and trolling for sponsorships from website administrators…that’s going to get out and when it does it’s going to rub people the wrong way. Let it linger long enough and it will soon turn into a bad taste in the mouth, especially if you're a girl making these mistakes in a room full of guys. I just don’t wanna see it happen to her because I think she’s a cool chick that genuinely loves this hobby and is cognizant of it.

I know it sounds like I'm being hard on her but really I'm in her corner. I wish she would just let the accolades come to her rather than lobby for them. I truly want to see her succeed (as a builder) because I think this hobby can only benefit from more ethnic as well as gender diversity.

In other words....this hobby could use more Stacy Tuckers.

You never know what goes on behind closed doors but I can't imagine that Liz would have been blatantly rude to Jo Coddington to the point where Boyd had to sabotage her check and then fire her. Very strange turn of events. But then again you don't know the real story.

My personal opinion....I think Jo Coddington had a problem with a young pretty girl stealing her thunder from the TV cameras. I don't think she liked the competition.

I was sort of thinking the same thing Tony. Based on what they showed last night, it seemed like Liz was a positive addition to the shop. I can't remember a time when someone was fired and the coworkers (Robert specifically) came over to say something encouraging even though he was quick to make the typical "girl in a man's business" comments last week. Even Duane seemed to warm up a bit to her when she came in to say good bye and thank him.

Oh well, I hope she can take something positive from the experience and move on to something that's a better fit for her.

This came right off her website:

"I worked with 2 of their sheet metal guys in Lazze's metal working class which was covered by the show American Hot Rod. Production saw potential in me being a part of their shop so they asked me down to LA to talk to Boyd."

Potential for what ?
Made for TV Drama ?
This leads me to believe it was staged for PR.
I may be wrong, but all the signs I have read, point in that direction.

:D Exactly what my fiancee said last night! Catty BS stuff.

And Boyd really is a joke. I worked for a shop in Anaheim and we had a few guys come in time to time looking for work, then we would find out they were working for Boyd and we would immediately know why they were looking. In addition, I saw what they got paid, and when Liz made the comment she thought she would make more, I can believe it. I am thoroughly convinced if minimum wage didn't exist Boyd would try to pay even less.

And attribute to his "lameness" the raised eyebrow kinda "wow" when he walked by her working on the instrument cluster, then 15 minutes later Jo is a whiny beotch fuming/asking why the "rook" is under her car, then finally says she doesn't like her 'cuz she gave her attitude (I would give Jo attitude too!). What I noticed was how Boyd had his back turned to her and Napoleon staring at the screen like a whipped pup. The Duane looks toward Boyd and Jo piped up "Boyd has a problem with her because I have a problem with her". Reality TV - proof that absolute stupidity masks as drama.

I too noted that Al quit as well. Al is one of the more solid guys, and IIRC he quit during an episode a couple years ago-ish, and then he was back later on. I suspect he likes a constant paycheck, but then gets irritated with Napoleon and has to leave (which was his reason on camera last night).

Hey guys,
I wanted to come on here to clear some stuff up. First of all i want to thank you guys who have shown your support on here, i have read some really nice things about me and I couldn't be more appreciative.

The thing I wanted to clear up is the sponsorship though Lateral-G.net that has seemed to cause quite a commotion. I met some of you guys at SEMA 06 and was made a member page on the LG website. I posted the link to the page and the website on mine and sent out an email update to my mailing list about it. A while back I asked Scott if he would be interested in having the LG logo on a t-shirt I was thinking of producing in trade for some capital to get the whole thing started. I just thought it would be a mutually beneficial investment since I would be advertising for LG, I wouldn't have asked a company or organization I didn't already support.. Scott said no and that was
fine. Some of you remember that I was featured in Hot Rod Magazine the month of SEMA. My participation on the LG forum as well as all other forums were really me biting off more than I could chew since the feature yielded quite a few emails making it impossible to keep up participation on the forums. I am truly sorry to Scott and everyone if this whole deal was misrepresented or misunderstood but really I'm not just looking for money for nothing.

I hope I get to see you guys at SEMA this year and if you guys have any questions about anything please do ask.

Just finished watching the episode... I still just can't figure out why Boyd would want everyone to see what goes on in his shop...especially if it's staged - wouldn't they stage it to seem like a COOLER shop? Then add drama and stir? Maybe he's laughing all the way to the bank, I dunno.

NAH!! Just thought I'd make things right! Here is the e-mail I sent her last sunday!

"Hi Miss Miles! (Can I call you Liz?)

My name is John and I have abysmal welding and metal fab skills which is why my present project, a ’66 Nova, is with Ironworks Speed & Kustom and not me! LOL!!!

Here’s what it looks like so far!

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g170/novanutcase/HammersonNova.jpg

I am a member of several forums one of which you had posted on, Lateral-G.net! I found out later that you had asked Scott, the owner of Lateral-G, if he would sponsor you to stay on the site! I guess he said no since I didn’t see anymore posts from you! When I found out about this whole situation I thought it was kind of lame for you to have asked Scott if he would pay you to post on his forum! Well, there was some discussion about this on the forum and in the end we all chalked it up to either a mistake on your part or the prodding of someone else!( An agent or manager?) Most of the people on the forum that have met you thought you were very nice and, since I had already passed judgement on you I decided to rescind my feelings about the whole episode and apologize for having passed judgment without getting your side of the story! In any case, I would like to invite you back to Lateral-G as many of the guys(I think Lateral-G’s membership is up to 250,000 members!) would like to see you on the forum again! It was nice to get a womans perspective of the industry! In any case, this e-mail wasn’t for me to really invite you back to Lateral-G as much as it was to apologize for having passed judgement! Sorry!

BTW you should check out the shop that’s doing my works website! They’ve got some insane builds going on over there( Actually, they’ve been mentioned in the last few Popular Hot Rodding, Trucking, and Hot Rod magazines)and, you being a metal fab goddess, can appreciate the craftsmanship that these guys have! I really think that they are the next big shop much along the lines of Alan Johnson or Troy Trepanier!

http://www.ironworksspeedandkustom.com

Here’s a link to the build that Ironworks is doing that I posted on Lateral-G!

http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=4432&page=38

Good Luck!

John

P.S. I was wondering, since you are pursuing a TV career, have you thought about hosting a show in which you do a build and show what it’s REALLY like to build a hot rod! Many of the guys I know think that American Hot Rod is complete BS and are so sick of the soap opera that masquerades as a car build show but you would be the perfect spokesperson to build hot rods and I know of MANY that would watch with great intent! I dont think it would pay enough to head south.. But in the long run who really cares if she decides to tell she will.. I could really care less, I enjoy talking to her and she is quite a skilled fabricator at a young age she has drive and more eni****ive than most her age....

The day I interviewed I was introduced to Jo by Boyd. I said "Hi, I am Liz, nice to meet you" she said "hi" and that was the last time we spoke or made eye contact.

It was also funny to see the show how upset she got at Duane about me workin on the car. I guess customer cars are second rate and they are ok with that being said on national TV...

Her attitude was actually a blessing in disguise I got out of that shop... Kind of a stressful place to work...
