If you're willing to spend some $$$$ you can have incredible sound. Are you on a tight budget or trying to keep a stock appearance? If not most high end stereo places could build you a sweet set up...basically what you pay for is what you get. I started with the mild upgrade from my stock 71 set up Custom Auto Sound stereo and kick panel speakers....it was not cutting it, especially with the top down....decided to go with a serious upgrade:

Stereo: Alpine 9805 CD player w/removable face plate, front speakers = high output Boston Acoustics Pro Series 5 1/4” split channel – replaced Custom Autosound speakers inside the kick panels, flush mounted 5 ¼”” Bouston Acoustic CRX57 2 way speakers in the rear. 2 x 10” 100 watt JL Audio subwoofers and a 500x5 watt JL Audio amp kit in the trunk to add some extra power to the system. Trunk is professionally closed in and carpeted. Entire system installed by Myer-Emco in Alexandria, VA.

...this was 4 years ago so I'm sure some of this is already outdated but man what a difference in sound. I had the shop put stock appearing flush mounted speaker grills in the back and then they stained them white to match my interior. They don't look like much from the outside, but the Bouston Acoustic speakers underneath are amazing...
