Default Turbos for an LT-4

Ok guys here is another what turbos to run.. I have been rambling about turbos for quite some time and this has inspired a friend of mine to run with the idea, and i offered to help.

The car is a 31 ford roadster btw. The engine is a 95 LT4 with speedpro blower/turbo pistons, crower rods and TFS heads, stock intake and large TB. the engine is running a procharger with a 2 core intercooler as of now, but we have decided to jump into the deep end and mount a pair of turbos.. we have decided upon a set of schwartz cast manifolds (there is a canadian guy on ebay that sells some simmilar ones for 700, but support the supporting vendors right??(that and the schwartz ones look prety good))

here is the question, what size turbos would be right for that car, we intend to run boost in the .7 to 1.1 bar range perhaps more but it is more inportant that the turbos spool up quick and the car launches from standstill at idle than boost hitting at 4000 rpm..

the tranny is a level 4, 700R4 and the rear is a 3.5:1 jaguar IRS and the car sees alot od street miles, and is punished frequently in intersections and raced (1/8 mile drag) every 3-4 weeks..

i have found some turbos that are availabl ereasonably cheaply here, one is a TO4S, T5 COMPRESSOR WHEEL, COMPRESSOR HOUSING A/R .60 and the other one is

COMPRESSOR WHEEL SUPER 70 60.5mm ( same as Garrett T61)
TURBINE HOUSING A/R .84 COMPRESSOR HOUSING A/R RATIO .70

are they to big, should we be looking at a pair of t3 instead??

A 60-1 HI-FI TURBO WOULD BE PERFECT! Super fast spool, and very tiny.

i knew you would say that... but i sort of think that price is somwhat of an issue, the two turbos ive found are xs power units, they are actually old garett oem parts that have been replaced, so the quality is ok they arent glued together chineese, but they arent new hi-end designs eithet.. they have one quality thet run between 375 ans 425 dollars a piece.. and his budget is prohibitive of two turbonetics units.. (they are somthing like 12-1500 bucks right??)

there is a smaller one with the following specs:

T04E TURBOCHARGER

3\" INLET DIAMETER

2\" OUTLET

WET FLOATING BALL BEARINGS

.57 COMPRESSOR WHEEL TRIM

.60 A/R COMPRESSOR

.63 A/R TURBINE

is that too small?? and how can a ball bearing turbo only cost 500 bucks?

Many say XS power, SS autochrome, and Mountain racing turbos are junk. I can not say first hand. I do know I would not trust a turbo company that flat out lies about being ball bearing. They are just standerd bronze oil "bushings" just like a main bearing in a engine.

AGREED!!!!!!!!!!!

If they are claiming they are old Garrett parts then they are the ones that weren't up to garrett's strict standards. I have heard on many different boards about complete failures of these turbos. I don't have the time at work to search around for pictures to prove my case but they are definitely out there.

I don't mind some of the non moving parts XS power & SS autochrome sells like intercoolers or maybe even a BOV but when bearings and shafts spinning at 50K+ rpm are involved I prefer to spend the money for the good stuff.

The average turbine shaft in a medium sixe turbo at max boost is closer to 100,000 rpm!! If you loose a turbine, it gets sucked into the motor. Guess what that does.

I'll be interested to see what kind of turbos you end up using. I want to use the schwartz manifolds and a pair or turbos for my 327 in about a year from now.

shouldnt be a problem considering its a hoodless hotrod

with regards to the xs power units... i can see its somewhat of a gamble buying one.. and two is close to stupid.. but the 60-1 Hi Fi units what is the price on those?
