Default LS Crank Balancer Install

Hey Everyone,

I'm in the middle of finishing up working on my buddies LS motor. I got the harmonic balancer/crank pulley off to replace the timing chain tensioner and the gaskets.

Regarding the installation....can I just use the bolt to press it back on? I see guys are selling all-thread with a nut and washers on ebay to install these. My concern is if the original bolt will snap inside the crank while trying to press the pulley back on.

Any suggestions?

If I remember right you can use the old bolt to run it in, then take it out and torque your new bolt in.

I've been slowly collecting LS tools so I can do it the "right" way. I don't think you will break the original bolt, it's pretty damn beefy, but I can understand your concern.

The problem I've seen is the bolt isn't long enough to get enough threads in the crank when the balancer is just starting to be pulled on; you run the risk of stripping the crank. I use a threaded rod with large nut/washer, and a roller bearing between the balancer and washer/nut. Bought all of that through McMaster-Carr.

Do it how Jody did his. If you try to use the old crank bolt, you'll damage the crank threads.

Go to Fastenal & get a piece of threaded rod & make an installation tool. I think it is 14mm x 1 thread (have them check with old bolt). Get some bronze washers, some segments of pipe for spacers & a couple of nuts & you are good to go. I did that & tonight can take a picture & show you if you like.

Basically something like this:

I just went to autozone and rented the installer tool. When your done you just return it. If you dont have autozone I'm sure there is another company like napa, pepboys. They almost all do rental. Also I splurged and bought the ARP bolt which can be reused compaired to the original which can not..

Ahhhh okay. Thanks for the replies. What Jody said makes perfect sense.

I noticed on Ebay there is guys selling the 'installation tool' for $20 bucks. Theres a guy on my local craigslist selling one for $40 bucks!

I didn't think about autozone though...I'll have to go that route.

I like to use a hot plate and ove gloves. Works great be sure not to over heat it. 210 degrees tops.

I with Vince. It's the same way the damper went on the current LS1. Just be sure to know exactly where the final placement must be and make your install movements quickly. It takes little time for enough heat to transfer before the clearance it taken out.
