Default amount of pipe over lap one exhaust to seal joint.

I'm having my headers coated and I need to figure how far from the end of the collector to stop the coating. There is only about 1/2" of room from the floor to the top of the collector so I doubt I coud get room for a V Band with clamp, so I'm going to use a slip joint and band clamp.
I had even thought of elongating the holes in the header flange in the back to try to drop the back of the header a little just to get some extra clearance. So my question is how much do I need to leave un coated so I can get a good seal from slipping the pipe over the collector? Which will have to stay un coated.

Why do you have to leave it uncoated for the slip fit to seal? Coat the whole thing and it will be fine.

Regarding floor clearance: Don't slot the mounting holes to get more room, you are just asking for leaks. You would be surprised what you can accomplish with a long enough bar.

The bar was my second idea but I could picture wrecking something.

Or use a Rosebud torch tip, heat the headers and bend them down for a little more clearance but the band clamp as is should work.

Thanks guys, I saw some Holley stainless Torco band clamps that do a butt connection so I'm going to coat the complete header and try them.
Thanks again.

Paul, yes they're 304 stainless I'm coating them to reduce temps in the engine bay and in the cabin. When I bought the car it had no A/C and it was miserable to drive in the summer. I loved winter driving but as you know good days are few and far between in winter up here.
I'm going with Jet Hot 2500 degree coating to try to keep intake temps down. It's pricy but the way this is going this will be my big build so like my buddy says
It only cost ten cents more to go first class. ( of course he probably heard that saying in 1910 ). I'm getting a titanium color.
