I hear it's a bad idea, will flake eventually, and have heard the opposing view that if done correctly it's OK
And powdercoating isn't shiny enough from any I have seen
so, anyone have experionce / feedback on this?

Back in the early 80's when chrome was king...........
I had several aluminum items chromed on my boat; tunnel ram, valve covers, engine rails and plates, etc. Had the stuff for years, never had any flaking or issues with it. I'd say it's all in the prep and quality of the chrome plating, if done correctly should be fine.
Had a lot of chrome on this one too, but no good pics.........................
